Do you think the Columbia Place Mall will thrive again in the future?

@@HitchHikingYeti no the gangs and crime in that area makes it too dangerous for the average citizen to want to shop there

19:19 Originally that was JCPenney‘s. That closed around the mid 00s. The the top became Steve & Berry’s and the bottom Burlington Coat Factory.

That cinema has been closed off and on since the 90’s for long periods of time.

This isn’t really surprising, that mall didn’t have many if any good stores 20 years ago.

It’s pretty sad that malls just have gone by the wayside. Growing up the mall was the hang out. We would get on a bus Saturday morning and take it to the mall. Play some video games. Check out a couple stores get some food and head home. I hope these malls find a new life that we can enjoy one day.

I’ve been to many movies at that theater when I was in college in Columbia in the early 80s. Lots of midnight movies. 😃 I did shop some at the mall, but not a lot. I think at one time Belk was an anchor store.

I grew up going to Columbia Mall and I worked at that Sears for 7 years. I think that location of Sears closed in 2017 or 2018. The walled off JCPenney is being converted to state offices at least that is my understanding. That mall was absolutely amazing and beautiful in the 90s and early 2000s

It’s kinda sad seeing how it died…I used to go there almost every weekend when I was little! It’s unfortunate how a lively place that was always jammed packed turned into a ghost town.

I worked at Cola Place when Victoria's Secret was still here. Was there almost 4 years. Still lots of stores then, but surrounding areas still pretty dead. I used to explore the old movie theater and random empty stores after work. I wish the state would turn this mall into apartments....but the current plan is for DSS and new police....whatever columbia

Good update video. On a positive note, Richland County is currently building offices in one of the old anchors for health and law enforcement offices. The mall is way less than 50% occupancy. It’s a shame you did not go into Macys. The entrance from the outside had an amazing two story atrium with massive trees and a walkover bridge. Employees at the Macys have told me the Macys part of the mall is actually owned by the retailer, so there is a chance it might not be on the chopping block for 2024 closure like many other locations. The mall is mostly urban wear and local vendors at this time, which is good to see small businesses having a chance to be in a mall. I assume you will be posting a video of the Richland mall demolition and maybe the dying Dutch Square Mall? The Columbiana Mall is the money mall of Columbia. Lots of growth on the Irmo / Lexington / Lake Murray side of Columbia. The Columbia area has sooooo much dead and dying retail, I could film for days! The city hit very hard times as the agricultural and livestock industries fell here in SC. It’s hanging on thanks to it being the capital city and also USC being downtown and a major economic driver. Lots of northerners moving to SC and Columbia, Myrtle, Charleston, Rock Hill and Greenville are popular relocation spots. Thanks again for the video!
