This is so bittersweet. I was a teenager in the 80s and I am so lucky to experienced it !

I remember when they broke ground building this mall. It's incredibly sad that it's in the "nursing home" not getting any better. I remember coming here once or twice a month on weekend nights in the early and mid 80s, at a time when it was packed and flooded with shoppers. I can still remember it's jingle on TV in the 80s - All roads, all roads, lead to Marketplace Mall!

From what I understand, the mall employees are hoping the renovation of the former Sears into an orthopedic center will bring some life back into the mall. No guarantees, though. :(

I have the image crisp in my mind of this place under construction in 1981/82. I was 12 at the time. I spent my teens in this mall. In the arcade, in Burger King , which was originally not in the food court, it was just about where the camera was at the final shot, where everything is now gutted, near where Sears used to be. The food court wasn't built until '89 or somethin. I was in Brighton, about 5 miles away, sometimes, I would even walk here. At least this place is still on life support. It's sad to think of all the other places around town that are gone now, not just malls, but old restaurants and stuff.

That wood slant façade on that JCP is beautiful. The 80's tile is lit. This mall really is nostalgic.

I'm in 🇨🇦 and our malls aren't much better. We've lost alot of stores in our small local mall that has turned the mall completely dead. Even some of the bigger malls have become dead or close to it. K-mart left Canada in the early 90's and was replaced by Wal-Mart. We also had Zeller' s. Zeller's did good for a long time, but went under as of 2019.

Marketplace was my childhood mall. Pre-COVID, it was still doing OK (Raw and Real Retail has a video which helps illustrate that); it was the pandemic that put it on life support. As was shown, there's only the Burger King and pizzeria left in the food court; mall itself was roughly 1/3rd to 2/5ths occupied (if you counted the spaces before the Sears wing was sealed off). I don't think Marketplace is a lost cause yet, especially because its JCPenney has survived the bankruptcy process, but it's in pretty dire straits. The renovation to the former Sears provides no guarantees of anything, and the longer the RPM Raceway (and adjacent Dave and Buster's) stay closed because of COVID, the less likely they will ever reopen.

This really saddens me :( . This was the place to go as a kid when you wanted to find out about, or get the latest toys, gadjets, video games etc... I grew up in this mall. I really liked the mini-montage that you did at around 17:00, just showing a brief shot of a former store. I'd suggest however, timing the cuts between these shots with the music.

I grew up with this mall always being packed... After college I used to work here at a store called Altier Shoes, later bought by and rebranded to Shoe Dept. During the rebranding and subsequent remodel, I was scheduled to work overnight while the contractors were there, to "keep an eye on things." If I remember correctly, it was in the Sears wing. It was pretty neat being in the empty mall at night. I remember two of the career employees, Jim (I think) and Dwight, the manager. They were good guys and I hope they landed on their feet. Later, I worked at Sears and that just plain sucked. This would have been around 2010-2012. So glad I got out of retail. Sad to see the state of Marketplace Mall now, but not really surprising.

Went to college in Rochester during the late 80's and it was the top mall around Rochester. Midtown Plaza was on the outs and you didn't go downtown at night. Kodak and Xerox were starting to go downhill and I am shocked they still added malls. Never a huge mall fan, but in rainy Rochester it was a place to get out. Surprised to see it go down with RIT and U of R nearby. In far better shape than the malls in Rotterdam and Saratoga Springs.

@@AcesAdventures1 Do you think a lack of Canadian visitors has had an impact on the malls in the Buffalo/Rochester area? Back in the 80s, when I visited my cousins in Toronto, who would regularly go to Buffalo for a different shopping experience. Brings back many happy memories!
@Deadwrongallalong3 жыл бұрын
@@vancouvertwerp as a Canadian, I’d say yes probably! My main draw for the WNY area is trader joes and target in Amherst, and I’d stop at Boulevard mall about a block away just to get some products at Sephora that aren’t available in Canada. Walden galleria is obviously the nicer mall in the WNY area, and it seems to be doing well enough without Canadian shoppers, but for me personally it wasn’t as convenient. Boulevard already seemed to be on its way to dying mall status back in late 2019 so I’m curious but also worried about what it will look like by the time the border reopens and I make it back there

I remember when most of these stores were open and this mall was busy. Look at it now. There’s a huge medical center in the south side (where sears used to be), that Burger King is not there anymore, and it’s depressing. The only malls left in the Rochester area that are mostly vacant are the ones in Greece and Victor. This one is no more.

I would love to see some music video style remix videos. Your footage to music are why I prefer your channel. You do a good job allowing people to feel their own way about these places and have a talent for pairing emotion/song. I'm not opposed to the news segment but repeating sensationalized media that already exists changes the experience. If it was news based on your own reporting of the properties, I think I would prefer it.

🇨🇦 I grew up in Ottawa and our cable TV service received the three major network affiliates (WOKR 13 - now 13 WHAM, WHEC 10, and WROC 8) so I knew lots about Rochester without visiting the city. Very cool 80’s graphics and music. You’re just getting better with each one. Have you been to Lafayette Square Mall in Indianapolis? To me, anytime there’s a Rainbow store, it seems a mall is doomed. The mall in this video reminds me of one in Northern Indiana, called Southlake Mall, in Hobart, Indiana. It’s in foreclosure proceedings and was a Simon property in the past. It had 4 anchors and is down to 2. This mall needs work, and probably won’t get it.

Local here. When I was growing up, from a baby in the early 90s to as recent as 2016, Marketplace Mall was the place to be for all of Rochester. As a kid, there was a merry-go-round in the food court and a movie theater until later in the year 2000. The last time Marketplace Mall was an awesome place was when I had a birthday party one evening in 2016 at Dave and Busters. After the holidays, which was right after my birthday, Macy’s closed. Sears would follow, and stores would jump around. Then Payless, Hallmark, among others. Then when all out of state businesses could have came around, a medical center took over and now Marketplace Mall is on life support. It’s going to die very soon, we just need a date and the moment when JCPenney closes, it’s dead Now Henrietta is no longer a place to live. It’s another downside to Rochester after the fall of the Kodak era that made Rochester what it was. To shop, yes on the Jefferson strip, but not in the mall or around the mall - except for cars. Henrietta town hall doesn’t care. So yes, it’s a dead mall...we just need a date for it’s grave. Awesome job, and awesome job with the retail news. Makes this channel interesting!

Marketplace was doing OK pre-pandemic. The only anchor space that is actually currently vacant right now is the former Macy's. (The former Sears is being redeveloped, Dick's and JCPenney are both open, and the Dave & Busters/RPM Raceway sharing the former Bon-Ton are only closed because of NYS restrictions - hopefully those will eventually open up again...)

You did a great job on this, Anthony! I’ve been to this Mall because of Thanksgivings at my ex’s family were Brighton-raised and they still have two of the five siblings, their children and some grandchildren that are all around Rochester. Your green screen is a great idea, and I think that you have something there, so please keep going with that. It’s a great idea, and I enjoyed that bit of information. I do have a feeling that there’s going to be a bloodbath throughout 2021, as you can see that there’s a very marked decline in Mall traffic. I was taken back at the open air Food Court Vendors. Our fast-food shops are lookingn similar to banks about twenty years ago, with partitions and a far stricter compliance regarding any potential for contamination due to the Covid-19 Aeresol, but you’re still technically in the First Wave, as there’s bill no large expansions of the Variants that has us under very strict lockdown until March at the earliest. Amongst the Committee Members during our Zoom Meetings we are dealing with the ‘Kent’ Vairiant, while also keeping a very close eye on the South African, Spanish and what is most concerning for us, the Brazilian Variant, because this one appears to be the greatest threat to those that have already had Covid-19 and also those that have received the two vaccines currently at hand. We have been under very strict lockdown since 26th December, and we’re going through our highest numbers to deaths and hospitalisations, so EVERYTHING IS CLOSED, barring Chemists, Groceries, Hardware Shops, Pet Stores, and Restaurants are open only for Delivery, according to my neighbours. I’m shielding, so I am just hearing from them as they go to the shops, and they have been so kind to me. They give me a bell when they go shopping, and I send them a list of what I need, depending on which shops they are going to, and they then let me know the totals and I PayPal them the money. Thank God for PayPal! I hope that you’re doing well. I’m sorry that I’ve been quiet these past few weeks. The situation was pretty stressful over here, so I didn’t have muct time to get on YT and everyone from the Dead Malls Discord. I really need a nice day of binge-watching my friends’ Dead Mall Series and showing some love to all of you. I envy your trip to California! Have a wonderful time, and I will try to get in touch with you befoer you head off to CA! It was really nice to watch your video, and I have a little more to catch up with you, so I am going to keep pushing recommendations to my friends that are looking for content to watch while they are staying at home!
