I like that there are still several planters throughout the mall. A nice complement to the pastels.

I remember seeing them break ground on this mall when I was about six years old, and remember buying a pair of brown shoes at Altier's during its grand opening month. That store used to be located in that Toy store spot between the vacant Abercrombie & Fitch and Lids store at 1:58.

I was in this mall two weeks ago, it was sad to see how empty the place was. Just a bunch of closed former stores.

Marketplace used to be a really good mall. Now, it's mostly a giant empty barn with a hospital attached.

sorry you didn't enjoy your trip up here to rochester.about 3 or 4 years ago wilmorite announced they wanted to get ikea to open up a store somewhere on the property but it never happened & they also announced that marketplace would become an outlet mall but nothing has happened yet & back in march it was proposed to build a senior apartment complex on the property but i haven't heard anything about in since.so outside the U of R medical center taking over the old sears no one i talked to really knows what they are doing with the mall.

This is crazy!!!! This is my mall! I knew one day that an abandoned/dead mall KZbin channel would visit one day, was only a matter of time. Reality has been for awhile that we are next on the list of closed malls.

Mine was Eastview, but I have had many visits to Marketplace. Eastview has managed to pull through the best out of all of them. But Marketplace has a nice charm to it that takes me back.

I think this mall can be saved and turned into a mixed-use complex like the Place Fleur de Lys shopping centre in Quebec City. Following the loss of Hudson Bay and Sears as anchors, construction on the site has begun to add a Université du Québec à Rimouski pavillon, a senior's residence, residential buildings, lots of green spaces and so on. This said, Wilmorite Properties have to spend lots of money to turn around this mall that looks dated and not very out-of-ordinary...

As an update to this mall, I walked through it three days ago and currently it is the most lifeless mall I've ever seen. I could show you on two hands how many stores are left in the corridor: 1. My Favorite Sports Store (sports teams apparel and memorabilia) 2. Best Fit Men's Wear (formal suits for men) 3. Auntie Anne's (pretzel shop) 4. A clothing alterations shop 5. My Sweet Potato Pie (kids birthday party venue) 6. A hair salon 7. DTLR (urban clothing) 8. Snipes (more urban clothing) 9. Allie's Pet Corner (just cats and dogs, nothing else) 10. Lens Crafters (eyeglasses) ---The entire former Sears wing has been demolished and converted into the U of R Medical Center ---There are no places to eat in the food court except a coffee shop ---J.C. Penney's is still there, but I really don't know how much longer they will stay. I never see many customers in that store each time I'm there. ---Dave and Buster's and the go-kart track is still there ---As announced a couple of months ago, Dick's will be leaving Marketplace soon and moving about a mile away ---The A/C in the building has been set at a higher temp since it doesn't make much sense to keep it extra cool anymore ---Parking lot is in rough shape ---Some retail space like the spot where Allie's Pet Corner used to be has quite of bit of water damage from the ceiling ---The old Macy's building was torn down and rebuilt into a place that sells flooring and home decor (detached from the mall) So in conclusion, this mall is in a full blown coma and most likely won't wake up from it. I had lots of great times at this place during my childhood in the 80s, especially on weekends when they had RV shows and boat shows inside the corridor and every store had doorbuster deals during their sidewalk sale events. Gonna be sad to see it finally close, like saying goodbye to a dying grandparent.

They are BARELY alive in 2024. Maybe only 10-12 full line Sears stores are left? There is a reason Sears and Kmart stores, are called "the world's slowest liquidation sale". As Doomie Grunt once called them....

UR Medicine is a healthcare system, part of the University of Rochester, not a company per se. I think they are building an orthopedic care center. In any event Eastview just south of town is the main mall in the Rochester area. I live in L A, but when I visited Rochester a couple years ago Eastview seemed to be doing good business. In fact I think I was told that there was a bus service that transported Toronto residents to visit there once a week or so. This was before the Covid crisis. I am not sure what will happen with Marketplace and I am not familiar with the Greece Mall situation.

Lol, I was hoping when I looked up the name of this mall I wouldn’t see a dead mall channel xD. I had suchgreat memories coming to this mall back in ‘07/‘08. I remember being a kid and trying to only step on the contrasting floor tiles while I was walking around with my dad. Getting my Pokémon action figures from the KB toys that used to be there and eating at the Johnny rockets that was right across from them. There used to be a huge carousel in the food court but I’m sure that’s been dismantled by now. If I’m not mistaken there used to be a pet store by one of the larger anchor store that would have puppies by the door that I would go in and pet all the time. Super sad but that’s the price we pay if we want the luxury of being able to buy whatever we want online. At least i’ll always have the memories!

I haven't seen a working pay phone in years. I think you have to put a quarter in before they will give you a dial tone? Those look like they are in good enough shape to maybe work? I would have dropped a coin in if I were there. There seems to be quite a few people walking around for all the empty stores?
@PaleOpal213 жыл бұрын
You don't have to drop a coin. Pay phones are required to have a dial tone in case you need to call 911 which is a free call.

Yes, you DO need to get back here as soon as you can, because Marketplace is hanging on only by its fingernails right now. Yes, its JCPenney is still standing after the bankruptcy. Yes, the Dave & Buster's appears to have survived the COVID shutdown. But there's no guarantees of anything - we're only one major setback from oblivion here!
