I grew up in the Shenango Valley and visited this mall many times, as we only lived about 5 minutes away. The "hidden corridor" was added in the late 70's/early 80's and was called "The North Mall". In it was a music store (Donati Music, which closed and bacame a toy store), a store called Top Tier Imports (where I got my first leather jacket), a small restaurant/hot dog/coffee shop and a couple of clothing stores. The part at the far end of the main mall started out (I think) as Woolworth, then Grant's, then Mason's, then Strauss', then Kaufman's and finally Macy's! Macy's closed only a few years ago. Connected to that section stores outside was a grocery store called Riverside. It closed in the 1970's and the grocery store space was merged into the Strauss'/Kaufmans store. That's why that store location sticks out from the rest of the mall a bit. In the 1970's and 1980's, this little mall would get so crowded on the weekends that you would be shoulder to shoulder! It was the main hangout for all the highschool boys to meet the girls! In the 70's, Sears still had a catalog order counter in the back of the store. Its where everyone would order things like Halloween costumes and anything else you could imagine. It was a really fun place back then. Good memories!

The problem with many enclosed malls is that what used to be an "experience" no longer exists. Yes, online sales have taken over (for a variety of reasons, which I will not get into), but I can tell you that malls have themselves to blame just as much. A mall in my local area (Federal Way, WA), opened in 1975 to great fanfare. With many areas for rest and relaxation (these rest areas were like mini nurseries, which helped give you a sense of isolation from the hustle and bustle, a place to relax and eat your pretzel or drink you Orange Julius). Years later, to generate the all might dollar, these rest areas were removed, supplanted by mini-kiosks with tchotchkies that pretty much no one buys. So now, on the rare occurrences I visit one of the two malls in my local areas, I feel like I am walking into a sterile environment with no real desire to want to spend quality time or money. Even the major vendors of the food court have pulled out, realizing that malls are no longer the money makers they were in the past.
@Mark.Watson4 жыл бұрын
@1977Melville I don't believe that. FedEx, UPS, Amazon are all over the place these days. People are buying more then ever before. People just don't want to waste time walking around in circles looking for stuff when you can just search it online and have it delivered. It's a better way to shop.
@16KidGuitar4 жыл бұрын
@@Mark.Watson I disagree, people have just become lazy due to technology and believe it is to much of a hassle to get up and go physically search for what they need/or want. Furthermore, malls were also meant to be places for families to go and enjoy a day out together, but again due to technology the family structure has for the most part been broken to pieces. Anywhere you go these days whether it be a mall, restaurant, etc you will see little to no social interaction between parents and children because all of them are using some mobile device as if to ignore one another.

My hometown mall. I recall the old wing (was titled the "North Mall") having a Pocket Change Arcade, a toy store (where the red white and blue decorative border is) a boutique called Raphael's (I think) and a cafe. There was likely other stuff too, but the North Mall was sealed off (or so I thought) in the mid 90s when the mall was renovated and a storefront went in to where the North Mall met the mall proper. I also seem to remember these really strange 70s style geometric benches back there (since removed) and I swear there were large pictures of local high school cheer-leading squads on the walls of the North Mall. Again, I was about 10 when the revo happened so most of my memories are faint and only getting more distant. Thanks for all your trips down nostalgia lane, Wallie. It works double for me since we populate the same part of PA!

Hi Wallie, this mall was a fantastic mall in its day. The hidden wing was not always hidden there actually used to be an opening to the main corridor with a big sign calling this little area the north mall, as I remember there was a toy store ( spent much time in there as a kid ) a sporting goods store a piano & organ place & a little coffee snack shop there & a travel agency, they added that north mall out of necessity at the time everyone wanted to be in the mall & the regular part of the mall was full so they retrofitted that area of the mall & put stores in there. There also used to be two huge fountains in the mall one in front of Sears entrance & one in front of J C Penney, my cousin fell in the one in front of Sears ( funny story ), there was also a section of the mall that was torn down, it was at the side of Macy's, back in the 70's there was a grocery store attached to the mall, it closed in the early 80's, I forget the name, anyway it got in such disrepair they just tore it down. Hopefully the mall bounces back with the new owners. Next time your in this area get ahold of me I'll show you a really cool abandoned drag strip & some other cool stuff.

@WallieB265 жыл бұрын
Thank you! It's honestly rare to go to a mall where there ISN'T a Jcpenney. And Jcpenney is almost always the last anchor in the mall. Chapel Hill Mall is a good example of this. I just filmed that mall and since I did 2 weeks ago, the JCP just announced it will be closing soon.

@carcrasher88YT5 жыл бұрын
@@WallieB26 So true about that. Being from Upstate NY, we've had PLENTY of malls with JCPenneys. Four that I can think of off the top of my head. One mall doesn't exist anymore, one mall is struggling, and it's JCP is vacant, and two others that have adapted, evolved, and thrived, with both of their JCPs still operating, possibly two of the most profitable in the state, if not the entire east coast. Those four malls, in exact order: - Latham Circle Mall in Latham, NY, which has been completely demolished, replaced with a strip plaza. One former LCM tenant did come back, with Burlington leasing a store in the new plaza. - Hudson Valley Mall in Kingston, NY, which is struggling. Has lost nearly all of it's anchors, except for Target (though, I personally consider Best Buy and Dick's to be at least semi-anchor stores), including JCP (vacant), Sears (ditto), and Macy's (recently converted into a medical office building). Low number of tenants, but plenty of big names still remaining (GameStop, FYE, Hot Topic, the aforementioned Target, Dick's, and Best Buy, and a handful of others) within those dwindling numbers. Unlike most 'dead malls', HVM's owners have heavily 'remodeled' the inside, walling up every vacant storefront, displaying a lot of vintage Kingston imagery, and carpeted the formerly tile floor. The place is clean, but certainly emptier than one would hope for it to be. - Clifton Park Center (formerly Clifton Country Mall), Clifton Park, NY, which went through an evolution, with a good portion of the mall being demolished, north of the food court, and redeveloped into an open air retail center. Some of the enclosed mall remains, and the JCP now is a standalone store, instead of being an anchor at the end of a wing. Not much vacancy, and the property around is still being developed. - Crossgates Mall, in Guilderland, NY (considered a part of the Albany area). Thriving mall, still under Pyramid ownership. Has a two-story JCP, Macy's, Best Buy, Dick's, Lord & Taylor (interesting history about that. The current Dick's is located in the original L&T, which closed a while back, then they came back a few years ago in the former Macy's (Macy's vacated their original location upon the acquisition of Filene's, and moved into there.), a two story store, just like the original.) Crossgates is also one of four Pyramid malls in the top 20 most visited malls in the country.

It was 2 floors and had 3 anchors of stores in the mall. It opened in 1971 and closedown in early 2004. It was dated from the early 1970’s interior. It had JCPenny’s there. That store had a nice restaurant in the store across from catalog orders to pickup. I remembered in the early 80’s the mall was busy. In the late 80’s it went downhill gradually over a few years. There was stores, restaurants, and even a movie theater with multiple screens inside. It is so sad about the mall being torn down during the beginning of 2004. There is 2 active malls close to that one that was torn down. This mall was called Lakehurst Mall.

It'd be great if mall management tries to get Burlington Coat Factory and TJ Maxx to take over the empty anchor tenants. Those two shops are always bustling

I see this video is over two years old now, but it popped up in my recommended and I've lived in Hermitage all of my life. Just some fun facts from my memory... 3:48 - Used to be a weird antique store. It was rather messy and just kinda had a large amount of literally anything with no organization. I heard they actually just moved out of the mall into an actual independent building in the area. 6:09 - The yellow themed store was a Pittsburgh sports team store, be it the Pirates, Guins, or the Steelers. That's all it was, after the Pac Sun left, that is. "Nadene's Pittsburgh" 6:29 - Pretty sure it was an AE 7:33 - The building with the flags to his right used to be a store that would provide things for children's birthday parties and events alike. I only know this because a friend of mine at the time worked there. Look up the directory on the website and it says "Party Zone for Kids" 8:18 - Annie's is a store that I just, last month, discovered what was. I don't have an answer. All you need to know it's kind of absurd and the target audience is definitely the politically far right. There's no specific merchandise being sold either, it's just republican based stuff. 8:52 - That brick floored store next to the Regis on the right was a pizza shop! Never ate there, but that's what it was. (also more visible in 9:48) 9:24 - This what seems like a pet store of a sort, I believe is no longer there. 9:33 - Pretty sure that LA nail salon is gone now. I might be wrong, but I don't ever really have a reason going back to this mall just to verify this. 9:41 - This Hallmark is gone now. :( Props to this guy by the way. Everything he said about this location is true and he does his research for sure.

Part of why the Shenango Valley Mall is a struggling mall is because of them charging very high rates of rent and most businesses being driven out because of the high rate of rent

By chance do you know if that old 1970s wing is still accessible? Also, great video

I'm sure you've read my story of the ghost wing on other videos but I'll repost it just for the people who haven't... There are several stories and theories as to why the wing was suddenly shuttered in 1997. The story I've heard the most often is that Pocketchange Park, which was the biggest attraction back there, closed around Christmas 1996. At the same time, Sears was looking to expand, so in February 1997 they evicted the remaining stores (Dollar Tree was relocated elsewhere in the mall, other stores like a coffee shop, a convenience store, and a vacuum dealer called Shenango Sweeper weren't so lucky), permanently locked the outdoor entrance and sealed the inline entrance (which was between GNC and Rave, those two storefronts are now one space occupied by Maurice's). From there, the story gets murky. All I know is Sears ultimately never went through with the expansion and in March 2004 the mall built a new corridor linking the restroom hallway to the hidden hallway, opening it to the public once again (please note these dates are accurate but I have no idea how accurate this version of events is, it's just the version I've heard from the most people. If anyone has more or contradicting information please reply).After the 2004 unsealing there were two businesses back there: Twice Loved Appliances, which had previously been located in the recently vacated antique shop, and a Mercer County government office. Over the next few years a handful of businesses would try leasing space back there (hopefully for cheaper rent than on the main concourse lol) and the mall opened a community room back there in the old mall office in 2005. The longest running tenant back there after the reopen was actually a karate school which lasted about 3 years before finally giving up the ghost in early 2010, they were the last tenant to try it back there. Also not many people know this but there's ANOTHER hidden wing in the mall that has been closed to the public for almost 30 years (ok not really a wing but a storefront). Directly to the left of the concourse entrance to Macy's there's a narrow hallway that is currently employee's only. Up until the very early 90s that hallway led to a Mercer County DMV office
