The reason the back section is opened is because that was where the public restrooms, and the mall offices were located. So even though there were no businesses back there, there was still need for access.

I grew up going to this mall and used to work at Sears. I have so many memories of this mall. Hanging out with our friends on a Friday and Saturday night. Hooking up with the cute girls we met from the other schools in the area. So many memories. Will be so sad to see it go but I am guilty myself of not shopping there since I moved away from the area back in 1995.

I am surprised the JCPenney survived the wave of closings during covid. But nonetheless it's closing now.

Keep in mind, when the mall opened in the early 70's we had three major industries. Westinghouse. Sharon Steel, and Malibu. When the mall first opened there were two huge fountains in the concourse. As you stated you had Grants, Pennys , and Sears. You also had a grocery store Riverside. However the population of the valley went from roughly 40,000, to like 17,000. Without the people, the mall was not needed any more. You have a big plaza about half a mile up the road. By the time the mall closed, most of the businesses left were local people renting space.

remembered the early 90s riding our bicycles from ohio stateline to that mall to get the next music tape or cds of the best music generation ever that was across from JCPennys and had enough left over to get a giant pretzel and slushies for our ride back home with friend's and our Walkman's.

Kind of sad to see it go, but I get it. There is not enough population in that area to support the mall. You've got the two malls over in Youngstown a half-hour away in one direction, and the Grove City Outlets about a half-hour away in the other direction. And then about an hour north, you have the mall in Erie.

This mall is kind of like the other malls along the Interstate 80 corridor, such as the Cranberry Mall, the Clarion Mall and the DuBois Mall.

Some,or all of these abandoned malls should be bought by the Govt. and turned into homeless shelters, instead of just handing out tents, and blankets.
