Say what you want about how predictable and cheesy some of the "horror" aspects of this is. But I damn near shit myself the first time one of those big ass, twitching, speed demon necromorphs came at me!
@kerianhalcyon2769
@kerianhalcyon2769 8 жыл бұрын
+KineticGTR Dead Space 2 was fun like that. I considered a lot of it an improvement to the original; new monsters, some variety in the old ones, and definitely great in its revelations in the plot. I do agree with some people that it wasn't quite as scary as people were looking for but then again when is a zombie shooter scary? That's pretty much what Dead Space is...and I consider Necromorphs superior to zombies.

Zyad48 - The Warrior of Evil Oh definitely. Anymore I don't find Dead Space scary. It is creepy, yes. Some of the concepts are frightening to think of. But it's my guilty pleasure enjoying both the games and the film adaptations that followed it. (Mostly because I have a Space Hulk/Space Zombie kind of fetish, but that's just me XP)

They're animated. Downfall is the better of the two, Aftermath was less of an adaptation and more of a way to try and publicize the second game and get a few animation studios some extra money. But Downfall's a nice precursor to the first game in league with Extraction more or less.

In all honesty I absolutely loved Dead Space 1 and 2. The story really had you thinking at many parts and I didn't really think the combat got old. Sure it may have been a little cliche and predictable at some parts but that that was fine to me. Not to mention, the sound in both games are brilliant at setting a creepy and desolate atmosphere.

I dunno, the face explody bit at the beginning was quite literally the only time in that game I actually was horrified. "Oh hey, this nice mixed race guy is here to break me out of this hellish insane asy- OH GOD HIS FACE PEELED OFF! HEADBUTT!!" Mostly because he seemed like a nice guy and for once I wanted a run into a character who didn't have generic love interest plot armor. That guy might have actually been an interesting character in amongst all the generic whos-its who fullfill standard character tropes to a tee. To be honest just once I'd like to see "random helpful dude" not be killed for some wrote concept of shock. Kill the love interest, for christ's sake kill her, then you've got an unmoored plot that isn't just trying to hit a series of stops on it's way down the track.

I remember watching a cartoon anime based on what I now think was Dead Space when I was about nineish and looking for videos on Space Hulk (Warhammer). I was so horrified that i had trouble sleeping for a couple of days and I suspect that it has left me with the crippling fear of zombie/necromorph creatures that I think I'm only getting over about seven years after the event. The point of that little anecdote was that Dead Space can be terrifying. If you're a nine year old boy.

+Thomas “Warhammerfan” Bouric There was Downfall, which was a prelude to Dead Space 1, and Aftermath, which is Stross' story between Dead Space 1 and Dead Space 2. Downfall is all cell-shaded cartoon, while Aftermath has both 3D pre-rendered sections in the "present day" (a little naff, but bearable) and four different cell-shaded cartoon styles, one for each of the four 'flashback' sections. I love the series, and the films are no exception, but Downfall is my favourite. I remember watching it in IT class in a background window, and my teacher checked my screen and pulled the background window up on the SMART board... two of my classmates had to leave the room xD

Just thinking while rewatching this, Dead Space is set in a future of space colonization. Maybe the job of raising an infant/child/teen is so socialized and efficient (Y'know, to get new colonies productive asap.) that your description, in jest, may be a real and practical method for our own space colonization efforts. I'm just a rando at home, so I'm prolly crazy. But Dead Space sold a few million copies. And if I've understood Zero Punctuation for the last decade, I think I can rely on this review being one of your more favored. #whatatimetobealive

I read a blog post theory about dead space i went something like this: Earth's air has higher levels of calcium than other planets with an atmosphere (this is true) After generations of living in space humans have developed austioparosis (A calcium deffeciency that causes brittle bones) Thus dismemberment is far easier, and the "RIGs" are actually pure calcium maintaing your bone structure.

I think the idea is that Isaac has magnetic boots(wich allowed him to be a flying squirrel in the first game) wich quickly pull his feet to the ground so he can crush bones and stuff due to the sheer power of magnets.

The gravity boots are used in places without gravity to hold to the walls. When Isaac stomps, he activates the magnets or whatever so the boots get pulled to the ground with enough force to sever off limbs and smash crates.

probably one of my favorite things in the Dead Space is the weight of life because, apparently, everything loses about 80% of it's weight when it's killed. If you shoot an unharmed enemy with the harpoon gun, they step back a foot. shoot them again, they die and fly backwards 40 feet.

Idk some of the stuff is pretty accurate but, finding that the ishimura docked on titan and exploring it post cleanup isn't really the same as recycling old layouts, its not as if they tried to trick you into playing the same game twice, they just included the ishimura as a level. And I didn't expect Isaac to have a masters in literacy and spill his heart and soul every time someone sneezed, he's a typical engineer, he isn't meant to be the most interesting man in the world. I will admit however, it isn't very subtle whatsoever, however the opening sequence was more of an innovation from the normal, slowly build suspense over 3 chapters before there is any form of gameplay, type of game, by making you have to pause and change your pants before your arse even had time to hit the sofa.

Actually Yahtzee necromorphs actually do replace the covers AND lay out traps. Like leaving ammo in front of those vents.

In regards to your comment about the gore not meaning anything, I advised you review the the "dark machine" activation sequence. That is where they chiefly try and give some squick. As for the non durable Necromorphs, most of them are reanimated decomposed corpses ALREADY torn asunder by the first few Necromorphs. So breaking something with tape over it would be the proper analogy as you said. But of course, not all the monsterous bodies there were easy to break. The Leviathan wasn't.

good point...hm..that said, I suppose a heavy enough stomp (like..a couple tons) performed fast enough would pulverise bone and cause flesh to rupture...so it could well be at least partially severed. yah, I think you're right though, not much chance of a clean severage..

He's a critic, his job is to draw attention to any and all flaws a video game has, no matter how benign, all in the hope and interest of perhaps encouraging developers to work on these little flaws and improve the quality of future games. Progression and whatnot.

If you are set back hours when you die, you dread every encounter. If you dread every encounter, you are afraid of the enemies and their hour-muching presence. If you are afraid of the monsters, it is a scary game. Doesn't even have to be technically "scary" for this to work at all; Super Mario Bros. could make Bowser scary with such an approach.

Yes. Except when I think of Cthulu I don't think about space suits and galactic cruisers, I thin about undersea doom temples and ancient sea-ship cults.

Well to be fair those luminescent spines everyone wears offer the advantage of super strength so it would be pretty easy for anyone to stomp bone like nothing.

Actually they do try to tie some kind of emotional investment to him in the form of the Lambda scientists in HL1 and the general populace, one of the species of alien from the previous games, 2 of the characters from the previous game (Barney and Isaac) and the Vances in HL2.
