it seems like the inclusion of so many mechanics from DS 2 was more like to appeal to more fans and with the possibility of not getting it remade. It provides that "feeling" and almost easter egg in combat, just in case this remake wasn't successful enough to warrant a sequel.

I think because DS2 was just better in gameplay mechanics than the first clunkier one. I don’t think it’s because they think they won’t remake them. That will depend on the first ones sales and how well it was received. If the data shows that it was than they might make a DS2 remake as it may be profitable. if so, they will green light it. As long as their is a acceptable projected profit, there will be a game.

As a new fan who did rely on the ripper quite a bit, I honestly didn’t mind its prevalence. It definitely needs a nerf in the ammo department, but I found it immensely satisfying to run straight up to an enemy and just go to town on them. The stunlock was never guaranteed, meaning I was always at risk of an enemy breaking out of it and hitting me, and it’s like a fart in the wind against those tiny baby enemies. Plus, it’s pretty bad against boss fights, and like you said it becomes far less useful once you hit the midgame, so I ended up putting it in my storage eventually and switching to other weapons.

Classic "it could be more like DOOM Eternal" Mayo! All valid points and I think you're on to something about the cutter being a little underwhelming, and the ripper a bit over. Dead Space, as a remake, is limited in places where they changed less than they perhaps should have to keep series veterans challenged... but at the same time, it's a reboot of a series and chose to ease new players in. In that regard, it feels like the most subtle and unfortunate change is that the cutter's inability to one-shot arms at the start of the game, even on normal difficulty, undercuts the "cut them up" concept of the series; and later upgrades like the fire DoT further de-emphasize that gameplay quirk by adding more reliable body-shot damage rather than boosting the limb-cutting ability. I find panic spray to center-mass is weirdly effective, while sniping arms is doing far less than it should. But all that to say, those features are still present, and with the addition of kinesis, instead buffed down the arm-launch combo route, indirectly getting some of that effectiveness back. It may have reduced the strength of one of its pillars, but as a ghost train ride it still results in an extremely enjoyable experience. But I definitely would agree that a game mode that buffs body hp and enemy move speed, while *reducing* limb hp, would be a nice change of pace option for an ng+

My only issue is the idle animations are gone, and the way he aims the plasma cutter with one arm is gone he used both when moving in the first game and one hand it not moving, also dead space 2 had the option to use classic laser aiming instead of the flat cross hair on the screen, if you ask me it would have added to the immersion with the option to change the laser to get shorter the closer to you farther more distants you are.

Nah, keep all the busted stuff in. Dead Space is one of the few works of art, where inprobable space-fantasy berserker type alien civilization gets humiliated by an resourseful engineer. Proving that any xenomorph inspired super aliens land on Earth, we will kill them with literal rocks and be no contest. It is a story that can be viewed as both nihilistic lovecraftian horror, and a promotion (or anti-promotion) of human technological advancement. The game always gave you way too much power to keep a consistent horror tone, once you clicked with the gameplay. Or maybe I should just shut up and replay Prey for whateverth time.

I'm not sure what you mean about "not having to engage with dismemberment." Even (or perhaps especially) if you're using the ripper, you're wasting your time unless you're targeting the limbs. The closest to having you not engage with dismemberment would be explosive alt-fires like the pulse rifle, contact beam, and flamethrower, and those come at a high enough penalty to ammo that it's really only a good option if you're backed into a corner. (And even with those abilities, you'll sometimes have enemies whose limbs survive, and you have to finish them off.)

I would like to point out that the scarcity of resources in DS2's higher difficulties has a tendency to push the player towards picking a couple of weapons they like and sticking to those, rather than having a full set of four; the game will *always* give you ammo for what you have, and by having fewer weapons, you're able to keep the ones you've got more well stocked. DS2's challenge is a healthy one, in my opinion, because the game will provide you with *just* enough resources to squeak by.
@pierrebalbin5434

That's why they need an enemy that relies on a combo; something that you either need to damage with either two types of guns, or a gun and melee, a gun and kinesis, etc. that forces you to rethink a bit. That, and I think there was a missed opportunity to adapt the plasma saw from the animated movie. I hope they remake Dead Space 2, and that they tweak the things you mentioned. Thoughts on the "ignoring dismemberment" concept you mentioned. I played on Hard for my first playthrough and the game does punish you for not cutting off enemy limbs, especially if you're using weapons like the Plasma Cutter, Pulse Rifle and Flamethrower. Base damage on the PC on hard requires 6-8 shots per slasher on hard if you cut a leg and then an arm. Ammo drops 6 per pickup. This means you're running on an ammo deficit the longer you use it. Once you get the Pulse Rifle you'll find your ammo for it being prioritized by the game. I rarely had more than 50+ Plasma Energy in my inventory while playing. But almost always had 200+ Pulse Rounds. Flamethrower fuel drops at even less rates due to it utility. This was an ever constant until my credits rolled. Maybe I just had bad drops, or maybe I suck. But depending on which weapons the player uses I can totally see how you'd stop cutting limbs and just mowing em down. Contact Beam is a monster btw, unstoppable.

Interesting, I never used the Ripper cause I felt like the alt-fire was underwhelming and primary-fire would leave me vulnerable to being flanked. Gravity well + flame wall ended up making most combat encounters relatively easy. The second fight vs the Brute was made trivial by the presence of a stasis charger... one alt-fire shot to the back with Contact Beam and its insta-kill. Adding phantom necros in new game+ mode was indeed misleading, they're marginally tougher versions of the usual kind. I'm on chapter 5 and can't be bothered to play any further cause my weapons are almost fully upgraded (I skipped the Master Override side quest during first playthrough on hard difficulty) and yet every fight is easily manageable, regardless of phantoms or shenanigans by the intensity director. The removal of node-locked storage rooms and giving the player every gun for free as they progressed probably plays a role in this. While I did run short on ammo during my first playthrough at times (most infamously after killing the Hunter only to be surprised by an extra tentacle fight with nothing but my force gun), the only real challenge was the second Leviathan fight in space. The hitboxes of the side-sweeping tentacles were frustratingly inconsistent, which is shame cause the fight could've been made more reasonable by better layout. Otherwise, nearly all my credits went into buying nodes or upgrading suits (you cannot skip early suits in favor of late game ones to save credits). Sound effects changes on exploder and guardian were definitely unwarranted, those were iconic moments that ought to have been preserved. Animation-wise, the swarmers seem to just latch onto Issac's suit and freeze rather than squirm and spit acid. I also think they should've kept the tufts of hair on the slashers instead of making them bald -- in the original it made them look more human-like and therefore more disturbing. Overall it was a fun experience. Motive's decision to remove majority of lighting from early game encounters made the fights far more intense, even if it meant the occasional necromorph sneaking up on me.

@Daniel Geronimo INCORRECT. I wish this was early KZbin, and I could link a video directly to your comment, but that ain't right. OG, 2, and maybe even 3 ALL had slashers capable of evasive movement, and more common as you upped the difficulty. If you went for a long range or slow Linegun arm decap, they would sometimes ABSOLUTELY hit a crouch and it would sail right over. And if you didn't place them close and near the middle of the lime gun shot, they'd do this sharp one-step outside its arc. It was balanced, because both moves stopped them cold, making them vulnerable to fast follow-ups, and sometimes you could actually use the movements, since a crouched and approaching necro actually has its arms OVER its legs, giving you a 4-for-1 freebie, and you could goad them to juke into a spiked wall or over a trap. Scout's honor. Has to be video of that here somewhere.

In my first playthrough, I only ever used the plasma cutter, ripper, and contact beam. On my second, I used the other 4 guns. I played it on hard but found both playthroughs very easy for the most part. The ripper just shreds, and it's incredibly easy to use efficiently with ammo and thought the gun made the game much easier. But once I had my contact beam leveled up to max, it also made the game feel very easy. I realized that's how I felt with almost all the guns throughout both plauthroughs (except for the plasma rifle and cutter) I probably am the cause for some of this, though. I would only use a gun once I'd fully upgraded it (to the best I could at the time) in order to be most efficient with ammo. I started with the ripper and sold all the other ammo I got and bought nodes or ripper ammo in its place. Idk. I was just ready for a major challenge and wanted it to tackle it the most practically I could, and it was a tad disappointing that there wasn't the threat to match my preparedness. I just want a harder difficulty. It's not too much to ask for. That being said, it wasn't all a walk in the park, and there were plenty of parts of the game where I was completely engaged. I did start having a lot more fun once I stopped using the ripper (although that thing still is a blast and still comes with challenges, especially in zero g). The line gun is definitely the best, and those laser walls are so much fun to fuck with. Combine that with the fire wall, and nothing can touch you. The force gun is also amazing and a ton of fun. It's great shooting a gravity well, then setting up traps with the line gun while they all get sucked in and then roasting the shit out of them while they attempt to approach. All in all, I loved this remake. The new gun opportunities lead to some incredible combinations, and the gore system rewards you for all of it. It's very exhilarating, even if it's not the most difficult. I got a much bigger kick out of things when I thought of it as a horror game to the monsters. That Isaac is a badass engineer gone mad and is eager to fuck them up as quickly as possible. Also also the first few chapters of this game are amazing when you're left primarily to the plasma cutter. It's still very scary and nerve-wracking, which is super important to the beginning of a survival horror game. It's important to instill fear initially to truly feel the progress later on in the game. I'm fairly high

So the plasma cutter will do more damage if you utilize it the right way for example. If the enemy is down and its arm spread horizontally that mean you have to turn it to vertical to get the maximum damage output. Most player will forget that and just horizontal run it. And windering why its not cutting. Also the ripper wont help you kill the boss. It might be impossible to get the achievement with the ripper.

I started my first playthrough on impossible because I wanted to play on hard, so I decided to give it a shot since it gets reduced to hard mode if you die. Gotta say I agree with most of what you're saying here. Nothing you mentioned prevented me from enjoying the game for a first playthrough but replayability is killed a little. I like more dynamic difficulties in any game. The lack of it in Doom Eternal is kind of a bummer. I think varying the following between difficulties is ideal. Enemy count per encounter, chance of random encounter, Enemy aggression (how often they use their better attacks, deciding to charge sooner leaving less open opportunities for staggers, shorter "stuns"), Enemy health and damage, player damage (NOT health), Ammo/Resource drops, Shop prices. Wouldn't count on it but I'd like pretty much every change you mention to be implemented. Nerfed ripper and line gun (probably mostly in just ammo spawn/reserve size and alt fire ammo cost respectively), adding either a new difficulty, custom difficulty or adjusting all difficulties to have progressively harder resource spawns. The rest you complain about couldn't really be addressed in an update.

I agree with the ripper assessment, however it does struggle in group combat. sure it has high damage and stun but it doesn't really matter when 12 necros and 3 spitters are on your ass. the line gun alt fire was super op, i feel it needs a nerf. maybe 2/3 racks per upgrade, potentially going up with the special upgrade. and 100% a duration nerf. with the exception of spitters I could just box myself in mines and watch em die. I do feel I might be a little biased as a dead space/fps veteran, and while I did feel challenged it could definitely be pushed farther. I'll say especially if you conserve ammo you'll have alot but balancing stasis packs, med packs etc had my inventory crying even at max.

I _hate_ using the Ripper. It's just not fun. Never have liked it, though I admit the concept of a kinesis-powered saw is pretty cool. But the way it's used, where you just use one, having it sit in front of you and lock one or three enemies into place, and then also immediately be cancelled, wasting the blade anyways, if you do get hit even once, doesn't work well for me. The alt-fire is a bit better, but with its tendency to fly right back at you or just hit a single enemy several times, it either is directly detrimental or just not particularly fun. Sure, it'll get you through a hall where you're facing a nigh unending trickle, but once you're against a group the thing turns damn near useless, and it wasn't fun when it wasn't either. Also the blade moving towards you when it encounters resistance is just kind of weird - making it so you control the distance, perhaps, might've been better. A skill ceiling, at least, and skill floor. I'm not all that big on the flamethrower nor force gun either, but those are for different reasons - the flamethrower just doesn't feel that powerful to use, although the fire wall is great fun; while the force gun feels great but also blasts everything back that you need. Ammo and health drops, enemy blades, explosives, and so forth are all taken by force wells or blasted off ledges.

Alright I'm not done. I feel like some solid changes would have been to intertwine the whole narrative of the trilogy in the remake. I would have been cool with them replacing Kyne with Strauss as the chief science officer. Because of the pivotal role Strauss plays in dead space 2, anchoring him into the original as a companion to Isaac feels like a good choice. And would make his eventual betrayal/insanity in the sequel all the more tragic. In chapter 9 you see a marine escape down the hall. I know 3 is pretty unpopular but they could've had this be Carter and then have a tie between all the pivotal characters of the trilogy across a single original event that binds them together as characters. Idk I'm on one today.

Well, all I can really do is speak for myself as a newcomer to the series (since I've never played the original game, I just watched the playthrough on KZbin) - I believe things you've mentioned aren't really that damaging to the whole experience as one might consider them to be. Of course the changes they made to the formula aren't for everyone, but if said changes make the combat a bit easier - but not to the point of trivializing it completely - then why not. To each their own, I suppose, and I do realize that the line is blurred and what one might call 'casualized' others call 'comfortable to play', and vice versa. Speaking of the Ripper I see how it's a potential braindead lifesaver tool, but personally I (having not found the weapon yet) was so happy to learn it exists, really. I played the game not as much yet, but when the first jumpscare happened I nearly had a heart attack, and had to turn the game off for a day or two, it really hit me hard. To say I was struck by it would be a huge understatement. So, basically what I'm trying to say here is that in a terrifying hostile environment that is Ishimura, populated with disturbing horrors of all types (lack of light, scary sounds, and - of course - necromorphs), a weapon like DSRem's Ripper is a blessing. I know that I would never be able to finish the game without using (or should I say 'abusing') it, because I'd be scared lifeless, potentially damaging my health. But with the help of this tool at least I can try to finish the game using it, even if it's dumbing down the difficulty of the combat for me, really. It's like the situation around easy mode in Sekiro where I'm not really advocating for it, but rather I believe some gameplay moments really deserve a bit of 'accessibility tweaking' of sorts, and it would most certainly help players to enjoy the game more, even if they are extremely bad at its core gameplay mechanics. I'm not saying mobs & bosses there should all be downgraded to a 1 hit nuisance, and no, I don't think making Wolf invincible would help either, these are the lamest & cheapest tweaks I'd never go for. But if you ask me I think there are quite a few things that still might be added to make the game easier and much more accessible - like, say, make enemies' poise meter (posture meter) recover at only half of its original speed (if not stopping the recovery altogether). Or slow down the rate of Wolf's posture breaking. Or tweak the hits animation speed to, say, 0.9 of its original value (at the times the hits barrage some enemies are launching is crazy). Personally, I guess what I was trying to figure out here is - breaking the norm (even when remaking the original) is fine unless the changes stray too far from 'more of a QoL improvement' to 'smth that was not intended, and now is mixed up, stupidly imbalanced, or breaking the experience entirely by transforming it into smth it never was and/or betraying the original vision'. Sorry for the wall of text. I really am bad at phrasing things right. But it was a really nice refreshing (and thought-provoking) experience, thank you for the excellent video! UPD: Yeah, I forgot to add that I wrote down all of that before finishing the last minute of the video, sorry. I'm totally agree with your point, especially the part around TMNT custom game mode.

Sometimes I feel like I don't quite see eye to eye with any community I'm in aye. The plasma cutter still kicked ass for me. I agree with the early chapters being downright boring for veterans. I felt like they could have done soooo much more for fans of the franchise. Especially since it seems like they're going to remake the whole series. The story elements and writing changes were soooo stale for me. Why even make chen and the other pilot a thing if they're just gonna die again like they did in the original? Hammond got a serious downgrade in both character and voice actor. Giving Isaac a voice just to have him react in predictable ways to the world around him felt like a waste as well. All the characters felt more shallow and cookie cutter. Not to say the original was brimming with depth but it had it's nuances otherwise it wouldn't have spawned such a cult following. They really have their work cut out for them when it comes to the sequel being that it is the far more compelling narrative and character drama. Idk guys I just feel like remakes and re-dos need to die. It's never gonna be the same as it was. Things were the amazing works of art that stood the test of time BECAUSE of their originality. We seem to be losing sight of that as a people. Not just consumers of media. Not sure what I wrote here but thanks for reading.

I'm curious if all the changes result in an experience that is less _scary_ than the original. Limitations like slow methodical movement, limited resources, etc., create tension. Dead Space 2 was not as scary as DS1 because you could move more fluidly, had more combat options, and it had more of an action focus in general. I'll be disappointed if some of DS1's more terrifying moments are undermined by being faster, more powerful, and more flexible.

I suppose it's a good thing it was given to a dev team that is actually competent and I think a couple ex Visceral devs even gave some guidance but still, I don't want to support what feels like franchise theft. It isn't like it matters though since everyone seems to love it being that they're so nostalgia driven and EA is going to make money from something they absolutely do not deserve a dime for.

First time playing Dead Space. I started off on the easiest difficulty because I was new to the series and found it somewhat lacking in combat. I was enjoyed the atmosphere but very quickly reached a point where I was actively looking for enemies because they don’t appear often. Then sometime near the green house area I noticed that ammo was getting low on my most used guns and I was forced to either buy ammo or use other weapons. I went with trying out the other weapons at least until I found my top 4. I then proceeded to buy ammo for those guns only and just made it into the mining section I believe. So far , the games atmosphere seems to be the selling point. I think it was a mistake playing on easiest difficulty given that I have a lot of experience with shooters. However , I’m also not a fan of “passive ” or “avoidant” survival horror games. I like to fight back versus running. I hope the rest of the game will be a better experience as right now my experience has been “meh”. It’s not horrible but not great either , and definitely something I could’ve waited on a sell for.

Sire 1 shot can kill an enemy but said time to kill is like 4x longer than any other weapon and the range substantially shorter.

Right but you're thinking in terms of DPS and range, when a huge part of this game is encounters with 1 or 2 enemies that can be killed and stun locked with a single ripper blade by standing there. DPS doesn't matter unless you care about saving time.

@@underthemayo Yeah it might be more useful early on then when you are dealing with 1 or 2 enemies. But in the sections I was using it in I was more often than nor surrounded by multiple enemies from most sides including phantom enemies which don't really stagger easily. I found it fairly substantially more reliable to use pretty much anything else. This was in Chapter 7 iirc. The Mining Decks. It was not very useful. My first playthrough was done with just the plasma cutter. And the ripper was fully upgraded too when I used it.

Do you guys think I should save up and get the remake or just play the original -that I already have from a friend's library-??? I'm seriously so baffled since the remake's release because I thought it'd fail since no one asked for it but everyone is saying it's good AND NOW I DON'T KNOW HOW TO GET INTO THE SERIES SO, PLEASE, ANYONE. HELP ME. Also, great half-review Mayo and can't wait for next week! I really love your channel and I always trust your taste and thoughts BUT I NEED AN ANSWER PLEASE.

Don't rush things, Remake is a little too buggy, so it's best to wait in your case, original is okay, I think!

@@antont4974 I heard that the remake changed the formula of its original map design and now you can start backtracking a lot and play it like resident evil 1 or something?? Once I heard this I was literally OBSESSED and wanted to play it ASAP even though the series wasn't appealing to me before. REmake is my favorite survival horror game of all time and I really want more of it so my question is... Do you think I'd even like the og/remake with that info in mind? or I should just stick with replaying REmake AGAIN? For me I think i'd like it a lot if it was the game I'm imagining in my mind... An RE1-like game with an actual good gameplay sounds REALLY GOOD but at the moment I don't have the time nor the money to find out if I'd even like it or not. Thanks in advance!

@@obdulrahman Original Dead Space is like RE4 in space while the remake is like Metroid Resident Evil. In a sense both are kinda different with just one or two key differences. If you want a more modern RE like experience go with the original but if you want the interconnectivity the RE has, go for the remake.

I mean, proximity mines? A good crowd control tbh, although this would be less redundant with DS2 enemy variety

@@danielgeronimo5538 25 ammo for just a single crowd control shot is not good. I can get much better kill using other weapon alt. And you know this game drop ammo depend on what weapon you have in inventory, better keep this in storage.

Try to use the flamer first then switch to the pulse to finish them off. This is where the pulse shines you save a ton of ammo that way and don't even have to use the mine anymore

@@yamasaer Considering how much ammo drops for Pulse Rifle that is debatable, although I won't really argue with it since, here's the fun part about the remake's weapons. It's anyone's opinion and preferences which gun works the best to your playstyle or preference. I've seen similar opinions with the flamethrower but I dunno, I like the new Flamethrower so much lol

The remake did not misunderstand anything about the core of the series. Dead Space 1 was never scary. It was filled with juvenile scares, pseudo disturbing themes, and the attempts to have the gameplay compliment the ineffective horror were only detrimental to the core gameplay. Edit: ok, maybe the dismemberment. Also the ripper being a combo thing would suit it really well.
