I'm just being pedantic, but do you think the original writers were comfortable with the "placeholder" goal of having the Marker returned to its pedestal for its own sake? Without the idea of the original makers to trigger convergence, and forgoing the idea that "Make us whole" was a plot TBD, that would make the Marker's goals cat preference level inane. 😅
@electrictwolights2177 Жыл бұрын
There is a playlist on KZbin of an original 2008 Dead Space dev playing through the remake, and he states that the original idea of the hallucinations of people was somewhat conflicted and changed from the first game to the second. In the 2008 game, I believe he stated that the hallucinations were there to add a sliver of hope vs. all the grim brutality. That the hallucinations might actually be helping you to truly stop the necromorphs, but of course they left it vague, adds a lot more nuance, and they retroactively changed them to be all a part of the Marker's plans to create a convergence event in Dead Space 2.

@SmoughBurgh the vids are on a channel called "CaptainBribo", I really appreciated the insight the dev gave in each video. I've been absolutely obsessed with Dead Space lore since the remake came out, and I do believe it's worth the watch, especially if you plan on doing any more of these Dead Space lore vids, which I hope you are!
@HALOASSASSIN24 Жыл бұрын
There's alot of insight those videos came provide which makes them worth a watch. For example they stated that if they could redo Dead Space 3 they'd completely remove the weapon crafting mechanic and go back to how DS1 and 2 did weapons because of issues such as having to have a single ammo type to make it work (which also was challenging to balance.) and the fact it made all the guns feel too similar.
@johnynoway9127 Жыл бұрын
well a theory of DS2 is that theres 2 Nicole halucinations. 1 is good wanting to shut the marker down and 2nd is the marker itself Some aliens implanted the GOOD side into human subconscience to fight the moons. hence why you get conflicting info from nicole. 1 wants you dead 2nd wants you to get into the machine and stop the marker
@vivusbrydyr4039 Жыл бұрын
@@HALOASSASSIN24 i think he said something a little different. he mentioned how they saw a problem with separate ammo in the first to games, like it discouraged experimentation, people who had a gun stashed away would stop receiving a lot of ammo drops for it and thus would never take it back out. They thought uniting the ammo into one type could fix this, and then combined with a new crafting system they were thinking they were on the brink of the ultimate weapon system that's all about experimentation. What they didn't envision however, was how it would derail into players making one overpowered gun and never making anything else for the rest of the game. That's why he regrets it in the end and now sees that even though not perfect, the original weapon system was superior.

I always kind of assumed if the marker tried to do a convergence event on the Ishimura it'd just blow it up because it lacks he mass and structure of a planet so all the necrotic tissue would just overwhelm the ship and destroy either destroying the marker or leaving it floating aimlessly through space.
@natemrt4278 Жыл бұрын

In order for convergence to happen it needs an architect/maker. However they died 200 years ago so the marker needed to implant marker codes into a potential one, that was Isaac which is why he builds one in Dead Space 2.
@rubencastro811 Жыл бұрын
This is confirmed in one of the NG+ text logs that you get, in the side-missions tab. It features a conversation between Nicole and a hallucination of the Marker. The Marker tells her to return it to the pedestal, saying: "If not the makers, then an architect will come". So that's pretty much confirmed that the reason it wanted to be placed on the pedestal is so that it could imprint its codes in the mind of an "architect". As for the Hive Mind, I disagree with another comment here saying it doesn't fit with post-DS1 lore. There's literally a Hive Mind that you fight in DS3, the Nexus on Tau Volantis, and that game gives you an explanation of what they are: they're conduits for the Marker's control signal, essentially the Marker's second-in-command. The remake takes this lore into account; the Hive Mind is referred to as a "nexus" a couple of times, and Kyne speculates that when the Marker was removed from the pedestal, there was a severance and the two could no longer coordinate. This is why Nicole says that once the Marker is put back, "The Hive Mind will obey", and why the Necromorphs are trying to kill you; the Hive Mind and the Necromorphs are just animals, without the Marker on the pedestal to amplify its signal and command them, they have no drive except to kill everything.

So…one problem with this video. In the original game you get text files, one of them on the red marker, one indicating that the marker is the same as the black marker, they all do the same thing, make necromorphs, and any dead tissue turns, either into the corruption or a necromorph. More over a concept that people thought was unique to the remake or the downfall movie, the “Dead Space,” field around the marker existed as well, the marker was passed by a cellular testing lab and scientists complained their experiments became inanimate when they did. The marker seems to have a field that actively weakens necromorphs and yet in dead space 2 the necromorphs gather around it. My opinion is this field is where the necromorphs go to begin convergence. And the field is active when it isnt ready to begin. But most importantly, the pedestal was NOT made with the marker, the necromorph outbreak began on Aegis VII and its clear the hivemind and leviathan are the research team that got turned in the planets core. One of the doctors got the idea “from a vision,” meaning the marker came up with the idea for the pedestal AFTER the necromorph outbreak. Meaning if we apply the razor to this The Marker actively wants to stop the outbreak for some reason that wasn’t specified in the original. My opinion is retroactively it didn’t have enough biomass to create a moon, or if it did humanity could be capable of killing it. Another thing ive noticed is in the time of dead space 1 a movie came out called downfall, Vincent the p-sec officer hid next to the marker for safety and was pushed by an apparition to launch an sos message to space to lure Issac in. Why do I think it intentionally went for Issac of all people? Well in mission 2 of dead space 1 a woman gives you kinesis saying “i knew youd come just like you said.” This is an extremely odd event event in current lore. The marker influenced someone to give issac a tool to defend himself. More over in the remake one of the new game plus logs says, “if the markers can’t be absorbed, then the architect will come.” Meaning in the remake the marker personally selected Issac to be its apostle, just like altman as in martyr to spread the blueprint. I dont think Glenn and co thought that Issac’s title of engineer would have any religious significance but here we are, the carpenter. While youre theory is correct that it wants to be returned to the pedestal it doesnt ask why. The cause and effect here is the fact that it stops the outbreak. Issac comments that the marker is in itself alive and thinking in his final journal entry in the original. Hell in Dead Space Martyr he black marker actively WARNED people away from it, only ceasing an outbreak after Altman copied its bluepring. Its hard to say what intentions are since these are different writers but the remake seems to imply the brethren moon in dead space 3 wants to be made whole over the hivemind, maybe its kinda like a new born in some fashion? Like the marker signal always causes an outbreak regardless if it wants it or not. Still i think dead space 1’s marker is mysterious. I recommend you check out the chant you hear when near it. It says “Sumus hic in morte, noster sanctus est.” which possibly translates to “We are here in death our holy god.” Me personally I think the marker while being a reciever of the moon signal also keeps and collects the consciousness of its victims resulting in a collective consciousness, but the hive mind itself is mostly just an animal, after all in the hive mind boss fight, the trophy you get is called “Mindless prey.” I think when the marker and hivemind are joinned the moon is formed in a unity. Sorry for long ass post just got me thinking. Dead Space 1 has alot of good nuggets of where they wanted to go, we still haven’t seen the mauselom ships mentioned in the unitology logs. Love your content as always, exciting to see fresh Dead Space lore.

Your whole "the marker collects consciousness" claim does have some support in game. When playing NG+ in chapter 12, Nicole asked "do you miss them?" Since the red marker can’t absorb its maker to start convergence. What if it had to be placed back on the pedestal to imprint the blueprints of the golden marker (that can absorb its maker) Into Issacs head. So then Issac could go on to construct the golden marker in a more populated location. I think that theory fits well with the alternative ending.

What I thought after playing the third game was that the incomplete brethren moon featured in that game was sending out a plea to any other makers in the galactic region. Begging to be made whole. Really well thought out and constructed deep-dive into the lore of the original story of the Red Marker. I believe this makes a lot of sense given that the marker chooses to sacrifice itself, but in the name of producing more of it's kind. Like an order of operations of sorts, Step 1) Commit Convergence. Step 2) In the event that convergence can't succeed, imprint the mind of those nearby, planting the seeds so to speak of a new marker's creation.
@PleasantLeech Жыл бұрын
I guess I got so caught up in the series lore that I didn't think too much at all about the original intention of the game. I do still believe that the necromorphs you fight at the end might be hallucinations. Although the main reason I had that thought was in the original, I pulled up the Marker to the pedestal, and a few enemies just disappeared, unlike running away and jumping in vents. It's probably just a game thing more than a lore thing. It just made sense to me that it's how Kendra was able to sneak up right behind you so easily. That line about the dead sleeping in the remake gives a different context, though. Maybe necromorphs run a little on auto pilot if the Marker isn't on a pedestal.
@majorbuginator549 Жыл бұрын
Well, she is right, but I don't know if it means what it used to. After the Aegis VII marker was destroyed, it seems any necromorphs left around turned into an insert, cellular sludge. At least that's what Dead Space 2 said, though I guess the marker fragments kept them intact for a while before that? If you look at Dead Space: Salvage and the second animated movie. I'm not gonna lie, I barely kept up with the secondhand material myself.
@ToaCody1 Жыл бұрын
My take on the whole scenario is that only the Black Marker is intended to be the one capable of triggering Convergence, with the Red Markers simply acting as amplifiers. What we are witnessing in the remake is the commencement of a backup plan to allow said Markers to potentially trigger Convergence. If the situation arises where the Black Marker is lost and/or any Marker is damaged to the point of fragmentation, the remaining Markers or fragments will attempt to imprint the self-replicating signal within the minds of any sufficiently resilient individuals. This signal will of course allow for the continued production of more Markers, but also serves as the trigger allowing the Red Markers, especially those derived from the signal, to attain the capacity for Convergence through the absorption of the signal along with the mind(s) of those afflicted.

If you notice, the onslaught of necromorphs actually stops when the marker is placed on the pedestal and implants the blueprints into Isaac's brain. This is to allow Isaac to escape the planet safely in order to build more markers. It's only when Kendra sabotages the whole thing, and takes it OFF the pedestal that the marker loses control of the Hivemind again. The Hivemind, which acts on its own animalistic accord, tries to kill Isaac. What doesn't make sense to me is why the Hivemind specifically TARGETS Isaac and tries to prevent him from leaving the planet. Is it because he's the only living thing remaining? After all, it does trap Isaac in some kind of Gladiator battle and focuses all of it's attention on him. Maybe the Hivemind figures that if Isaac won't return the marker to the pedestal, it might as well just kill him and absorb him into itself, for one reason or another. It's likely the Hivemind won't see the "big picture" like the marker does. It's also possible that a big reason why the marker wants to return not only to the pedestal, but to the planet, is so that it can convert the entire planet's biomass to a pseudo-brethren moon. Considering that it can't actually initiate convergence since the makers are "dead" (logically, though, even if they died a long time ago they should still be able to be absorbed), this is the next best thing. It can convert aegis 7 into a pseudo-moon and perhaps the other moons can come and retrieve that biomass for themselves. If the makers HAVE been absorbed, however, then it makes sense still that it wants to return to the planet because the planet clearly has the most biomass and is the most stable "structure" to initiate convergence
@donavonhoward114 Жыл бұрын
So the Marker wants to be returned to the pedestal because it needs to be whole in order to implant the codes into Isaac's mind, that way he can create another Marker (which becomes the Gold Marker) which can then absorb Isaac as it's maker ultimately causing a true convergence event. Even though the concept of convergence in Dead Space lore wasn't a thing yet in 2008, the story remains pretty much the same in the remake. The devs did an awesome job keeping everything from the original game relevant while giving us some context that links it to the other games.

Long comment: My original head canon was that the human-made Marker included something like an AI in it to keep convergence from happening while still siphoning the endless energy from it. Which would explain why everyone hallucinates and is told to leave it alone. The Hive Mind is pacified by its presence and all necromorphs liquify when it is whole. The problem was that it’s frequency still affected peoples’ mind, and after it was destroyed, the AI ‘died’ and the frequency in Isaac’s mind went crazy and attacked him. It was my only way of understanding why the marker actively worked against the necromorphs but I think your theory makes more sense. It would also make sense as to why necromorphs struggle to get near it, as we see what happens when convergence begins but the maker can’t be absorbed- the whole marker is destroyed. I don’t know the connection with the Hive Mind being dormant when the marker is whole or how that came to be in the first place. There’s still a lot of confusion, but your theory is probably my favorite so far. My new headcanon for sure.

It also adds context to both endings. The marker is either rewarding him or punishing him based on whether he’s fighting it’s control or not.

There is still a lot of mystery surrounding the material creation of the markers. We see in DS3 that the Bretheren Moons are intelligent and sentient, but I have a hard time imagining them running factories or labs to construct these things. There is no explanation for the evolutionary or cosmic development of the markers and necromorophs. We can explain how they work and what the bretheren moons are trying to do personally, but the cycle of convergence that creates them must have at some point begun. Considering the religious nature of the marker's hallucinations, the technology used to produce markers, and the extreme self-superiority of the bretheren moons, I think that the markers and by extension convergence were created by an alien race attempting to escape death. Maybe something went horribly wrong, or maybe this was exactly what they wanted all along.
@AxisChurchDevoteeАй бұрын
We do know that the markers are keeping something worse at bay if we go by what the writers of DS4 said. They likely were made in desperation by an alien race to stop whatever it is the markers are keeping contained.
@Hakudohshi Жыл бұрын
So the reason that the Red Marker led Issac to kill the Hivemind on Aegis 7 is that it no longer served any purpose. It was never going to progress to a Brethren Moon so liquidating it may have been some form of "mercy" on the Marker's part.
@captainclown2718 Жыл бұрын
While i agree that there simply was no convergance back in 2008 and I agree about the marker wanting to implant its blueprint in to the brain of all the people that are smart enough to understand them i disagree with some of the other theories. Or at least I made up my own version in my head. I always thought another reason why the marker does not initiate convergance was because there simply is not enough biomass to form a moon. the original colony was likley used up to form the hive mind and the cec colony was turned into the necromorphs on aegis 7. The ishimura had about 1000 more people on it. While the Hivemind and the leviathan a big they are not nearly moon sized even if you add all the other necros. Also the marker seems to have lost control of the hivemind (this is mentioned somewhere in the remake) after it was removed from the pedestal. This is why the necromorphs on Aegis 7 were trying to stop you from putting it back. The marker probably did not want rampaging necros because if the necros are discoverd without the marker beein present to drive everyone that finds them insane humanity might figure out that markers are a bad thing and dont build any more.

Interesting interpretation on the marker wanting to be whole. I just assumed the marker wanted to be closer to the hive mind that was on the planet. The hive mind was the closest thing it could achieve without convergence, and being physically closer to it made it in some way "whole".

Even potentially destroy it.

Great vid, Smough. Your explanation of the retrofitted lore from DS2 and 3 makes sense to me. The Marker didn't want to go to Earth because even if it reached it, it was not "whole" thanks to the death of its makers However, there is still one point that sticks out to me. Why is the Hive Mind trying to stop us? Why does Kyne speculate there has been some sort of "disagreement" between them? Was it merely faulty logic that the Marker fed to him? Or was it something real? Additionally, there is the possibility that those thoughts from Kyne were indeed misdirection and there's something we're not seeing. My hypothesis is as follows: The Hive Mind as it exists is a remnant of not only the recent outbreak, but the OG in Aegis VII, no? If so, perhaps the makers are indeed absorbed into that form and thus was a proto-Brethren Moon, but the Sovereign Colonies successfully halted spread and abandoned the colony. In this instance, "Make us whole" refers to both the pedestal and the Hive Mind itself. It isn't perfect, since if the Marker is indeed sentient, it must know that the Ishimura's payload was going to crush it out of existance, but then again, I believe there have been instances of small Marker fragments being sufficient to corrupt others, so maybe implanting Isaac with the codes and also retaining its capacity for convergence were risks worth taking.
@smoughburgh Жыл бұрын
Yeh that's defo a difficult thing to answer, as you say Kyne has a log that speculates it is at 'odds' with the marker - in general the Hive Mind doesn't really 'fit' with later dead space lore but as you say it isn't dissimilar from the face of a Brethern moon? Perhaps it is as simple as it is semi-sentient and it just wants to live? Whereas the Marker realises that it's over?

I was gonna look up a much longer explanation video but now I don't have to lol, I'm totally satisfied. I also think that the remake does a much better job telling the intellectual side of the story with a retroactive perspective from the sequels. Emotionally however, I do agree with most people I hear saying that the original character designs and acting, and the interactions between characters, was a much more tense and visceral experience. But, you give and you take. At the same time I understand the changes they made and overall I think the remakes of the characters themselves also helps better fit the overall story, especially Kendra and Nicole, they just seem better written this time around compared to the older versions.

Amazing video. It really was and still is a living question in my head ever since i played the original dead space back in 2012 I really liked your explanation on this subject in the remake in my head it makes perfect sense knowing what happens in Dead Space 2

When it comes to the Marker's plan, for me the most important unresolved matter is that there is no clear confirmation whether the Marker is able to have plans at all. It is never mentioned whether the Marker is sentient or not. If it's sentient it could have an intricate plan and influence key people to be exactly where they need to be, and then we have problems figuring out why it did things the way it did and not in a different order or to a different end. But if it's not sentient, it's simpler and makes more sense. Let's say it just generates a static signal that has different effects on live and dead tissues and by this fact alone things are set into motion. People start hallucinating things in line with their own emotional state and goals. Unstable and weak people see things that drive them mad and inspire violent behavior. Strong willed people with unresolved trauma see things that torment them. And lastly people who are smart, strong-willed and have a good control over their emotions see things they desire the most, like being reunited with their loved ones or receiving help with achieving their goals. Anyway either version is valid and neither can be proven or disproven, both have their problems/plot holes. But i personally find the one where the marker is not sentient more compelling, because then it's all about people with conflicting goals trying to best each others while headed on a downward spiral of delusion. With sentient marker, it's all weird and convoluted plans with unclear goals and suboptimal approach.

I really love your theory man it makes so much sense! I have for years wondered about the purpose of the pedestal part of the marker in DS1 cause it’s not present at all in the later games but this makes perfect sense and me being a massive fan of the series I never understood the reason why but I really love the theory dude makes the lore of the remake even more epic!💪🏼

They simply changed the story over time in to what it became, I think that’s the simplest explanation. Otherwise it doesn’t really make sense. It doesn’t seem there was an over-arching story, they made one game (and much of the story had to do with the gameplay), and they added to it/changed it as they wrote more.
@bipolarexpress9827 Жыл бұрын
I agree. I think the story is best when it doesn’t go past the first game. It gets very convenient explanations in the sequels that just make the story sub par imo. Isaac just made another marker! Lol ok.

Question - If the Red marker was just trying to implant codes, why did the Hive Mind try to kill Isaac before he left the planet? Or do the markers not control the necromorphs?

Just my opinion, it is that it was made for a purpose. And the red marker just kept trying to fulfill that purpose, control the hive mind that is RIGHT THERE. And so it kept trying to go there and do so.
@riddickraymond7067 Жыл бұрын
Well there wasn't enough biomass for it to form a moon and maybe it needs more then one marker as you see in the 3 game maybe some in the second as well. Even the black marker didn't want convergence as humans weren't really.
@Skylancer727 Жыл бұрын
I mean Issac did also see the codes in his head from the video shot of the marker sent by Hammond. Though I did notice that effect seems bugged on PS5 to not show. It's fairly obvious on PC though.

I still don't get how any of the markers, whether the original black markers or the artificial red markers worked, being able to emit constant energy without any power source and somehow able to contain the Necromorph bacteria. Like, was it made of certain radioactive materials put into a certain shaped that amplifed the electromagnetic frequency it was emitting to make everyone around it crazy, and were they built with the bacteria filled core so any civilisation finding it would get infected once they crack it open? If so, how were the humans able to replicate both the effects of the red marker and the bacteria? If humanity was already technologically advanced enough to do that, why didn't they mass replicate the markers like the red marker as a way to harness its infinite energy?

i got a question. what is the hive mind ? is it its own sentient being not being controlled by the marker or does the marker control it ? if yes then whats the point of it trying to kill issac at the end if he can escape the planet with the knowledge of how to build more markers

I always thought the makers must be absorbed simply means the species who built it. To create a brethren moon.
@garygrinkevich6971 Жыл бұрын
I always assumed "make us whole" was a thematic play on words that tied into other themes like the amputation of enemy limbs and every character has a relationship that is "severed" in some way, and the alien itself as a hivemind is calling for unification and reparation which also ties onto the capitalist themes of earth gov the ishimura being a "heaven for independent miners" mentioned in the intro. the concept of unification requiring the elimination of the "self" is a very poignant metaphor for a post capitalist society.

Have you considered this alternate explanation though...Maybe what the Red Marker is actually saying is "Make us Hole". It's asking Isaac to turn it into an early 90s all-girl Grunge band fronted by the controversial Courtney Love. If this theory is true then the entire game is based on a tragic misunderstanding.

I do enjoy the thematic of things separating, developing and rejoining as if it's a reproductive cycle. The larger series' story makes it seem like this is an absurdly horrifying method of reproduction for the markers that essentially impart their influence onto minds to rebuild them in a cyclical manner. I find it pretty interesting how on the micro level, this idea of separation is seen with the necromorphs and planet-cracking as a whole but then there's the horrifying conglomeration of human bodies after the fact Dare i say I see some Elden Ring motifs here? I wonder if Fromsoft took a page from Visceral lol

I thought Dead Space lore was interesting until Dead Space 3, which went over the top in some ways and basically shot itself in both feet with its "cliffhanger" ending. In all honesty, and this is my bizarre opinion, the Brother Moons felt like a parallel universe version of the Flood from the Halo series. Although, that could easily be a coincidence.

I never played the remake so I assume that the red marker of DS1 was trying to destroy itself by first being put together and then destroyed by the asteroid the hits the planet. I kinda like to think that this specific marker didn’t like or just didn’t want to cause a convergence or nercomorph outbreak in general because it knew that it was dangerous so it made Isaac destroy itself so the necromorphs “sleep” and no one could use it to make more. When I played Dead Space 2 I assumed the reason Isaac got the codes in his head was because that was a side effect of the marker, that it consumes parts of your mind with its code even if it doesn’t mean to harm the victim.

I think that The Red Marker of Aegis VII knew it was close to a convergence event on the planet and thus decided that the best was to go back to the surface and kickstart that to form a Bretheren Moon instead of starting from Scratch with a group that was fully aware of what it could do and likely how to contain it. Even potentially destroy it.
