This is heartbreaking. I spent so much of my teen time there - I can see it so clearly that it’s almost alive again. Before White Flint, the closest movie theater was at Wheaton Plaza (back when it was safe). There used to be a shuttle bus running from White Flint Metro to the mall. So many wonderful stores - I can still hear the classical music echoing throughout. I. Magnin where, in 1986, I bought a luscious pair of supple, cream-colored leather gloves and matching felt, broad-brimmed hat. Raleigh’s ladies’ career clothing. La Bourse with its legion of unique purses - I bought a white Halston bucket and several clutches - a black Dior, a multi-textured Fiore, and a silver Anne Klein. A caffeine boost at The Perfect Cup. Versace sunglasses from Bloomingdale’s in 1994. A dark-red merino wool blouse-and-skirt ensemble from Lewis & Thomas Salz. Cool clothes at The Limited. Strappy silver evening shoes from a 2nd-story store whose name I can’t remember. Kay Jewelers where I lied about my age and got my ears pierced in 1980 - later, a gorgeous, tri-color crucifix. I once had a watch repaired at Khoury Bros. Jewelers. And, of course, riding up and down in the glass elevator. My mom and I saw Titanic in the theater, then went to Borders where she purchased a bunch of books on the subject. I spent endless hours in Border’s. I had a part-time job at Impostors Jewelers in the 1990’s. My boyfriend bought me a tri-color gold garnet ring from Esterman’s just before it closed. Oh, now I’m gonna cry.

Just an FYI as a fellow DC-area drone owner: there is a 15 mile no fly zone for drones around DC, and this mall falls within that range. Technically flying in this zone is a federal offense and my colleagues have witnessed themselves DHS swooping in with an assault team and helicopter because someone was flying a drone over Great Falls, a similar distance from downtown DC as White Flint. Just be careful.

This mall is not dead it was murdered by its owners who greedily wanted to close it and re-develop the area. They are just finally getting started on that. It sucks because they could’ve left the mall and just built housing in the outlying areas it was a beautiful mall and it was killed by its owners

Interesting. Creepy. So freaking sad. I used to live in Silver Spring and really liked this mall. I'm on the west coast now but still keeping track of what is going on with the White Flint redevelopment. From the article I just read from Nov, doesn't sound like there's been much progress. In all this time the mall could've stayed open. I'm sure people would still be there shopping.

Nice video! I grew up going to this mall with my mom a lot. I remember getting Burger King every time, or sometimes a slice of pizza from Jerry's across from it. I remember being scared of this one store called SunCoast (I think it was called that) because they sold Pee-Wee Herman dolls and I was terrified of those when I was a little, that store sold some awesome Movie/TV/Sports/Music memorabilia there. The Redskins store was always a thrill but it was so damn expensive. I met "Santa Claus" at White Flint every Christmas Time too. The eatery by the early 2000's had like 4-5 places to eat (Sbarro, Texas BBQ, Sarku, Smootie King) and I remember how 80's and neon it looked - By the time I was in Middle School I'd go to Dave & Busters, or see a movie with my friends at the Theater which was always empty but I always loved it that way. Sometimes I'd go to GameStop or EB Games (i think they had both of them there during some time). Borders Books was a neat store too would always be buying Star Wars books or something. God I could go on and on, just so many childhood memories there. Thanks!

I can't believe this is the same mall that I was just in not too long ago... I am fighting myself to accept that it is it. The only thing that seems to be intact is the elevator bank on the 3rd floor. Strange how one of the elevators is just parked there open on the 3rd floor. I love how easy it is to get in. Do you know if the parking deck is being taken down too? I know Lord & Taylor still kind of uses it.

Rather than a lot of physical construction, only signs will be changed, however, the internet layout will change dramatically :) the RESEARCHER is no longer in season

Great footage, thank you. I wanted to go in there myself but, I didn't want to break myself and/or get arrested. What a waste...that mall was in a prime location; it was still gorgeous, not dilapidated/run down by anyone's standards or even that old (it's about the same age as me). They could have just put in more stores to appeal to all income leaves OR re-vamp the middle (offices, a MC or Univ MD campus, etc) but, still keep Dave and Busters, the theater, and the anchor stores. Also, they could have moved the stores out of the old disgusting shopping center next door (behind Fitzgerald) over to the mall and demo that place? Only Lord & Taylor still remains, they are involved in an ugly legal battle with the property owner over "breech of contract" bc they have a lease for several more years. D&B had a court case as well but, lost and got evicted. Outdoor shopping malls w/ communities attached seem to be all the rage (e.g. Rio in Gaithersburg) but, of course I don't find walking around outside in the extreme cold or heat to be go shopping, dine, or see a movie to be very enjoyable.
@cocksicklestick9 жыл бұрын
Yea i heard the same about the anchor store...they have a lease until 2050 or something wild. Its definitely a shame tho i thought they had a lot of nice stores but ive noticed a lot of big malls are sloy dying out...online shopping killing them :/

I live right next to this mall. It’s been slated for replacement with a ‘town center’ development with a more sensible combination of retail, residential and civic spaces for a while. It’s only lying fallow while they waited for Lord and Taylor to give up their 99 year lease and for the county to approve the development plans.

Debbie Skolnik The owners want to level White Flint and turn it into "an outdoor center, one with a series of fresh shopping options as well as new housing, office space and a central civic plaza." Lord & Taylor objected two years ago, halting development, and has gone to jury trial this week to block the demo and/or shake down White Flint's owners for a huge settlement, depending on whose lawyers you believe. :) www.washingtonpost.com/news/digger/wp/2015/07/28/jury-hears-opening-arguments-in-battle-over-white-flint-mall/?hpid=z4
