Yeah I remember scouring the classifieds for muscle cars back then and the sad part was that was the time when I was just starting to work and minimum wage was CRAP! Believe me if I was making money at a fast enough rate to put together $500-1000 at any given time you bet I would have some of these in my garage.

Yes! Hemi content, bring it on! How did they manage to install the engines at the factory, without damaging either the valve cover or inner fender paint, and a power steering box would likely make it even tighter. I’ve never heard of them removing a valve cover, so there must be a trick of some sort involved, could twisting it, raising one side higher than the other help.
@DeadDodgeGarage4 күн бұрын
You may not have heard of it, but according to Tom, the valve covers were installed after the fact. This is apparently part of the reason they are not orange - they were not on the engine assembly when it was painted prior to installation. With power steering, it simply could not fit.

Jamie that sounds a lot like the hemi that I bought back in 1980 it had 40,000 miles on it and it basically it was a 6 1/2 cylinder taking and get it apart it had broken rings on three Pistons. I live 200 miles from where I picked it up the guy said the oil was full I didn't bother to check it I got home and I was 4 quarts low in oil .so she was inside shape glad I got it though and I overhauled it then it is running great uses just about 0 oil another funny story I have to tell you is that my boss was a Chrysler mechanic they had Plymouth too actually and he was mechanic and I would say probably19 58 or so he started in. and 66 the hemi came out and he absolutely hated them there was a guy that bought a 66 GTX and he ran the engine out of it twice in the 12,000 mile warranty so. Todd had to change the engine twice he started a independent repair shop with another man1971 and I work there while I was going to votect and also for 20 years after that 1991.so I was talking to him about cars and what I wanted was the TA challenger or a hemi and when I said hemi he said you buy that and I will not give you any kind of hand fixing that.. I am sick of them and back in 66 they didn't have the windage trays on them and this guy had a four speed and he was a crazy man so anyway that's my story of hemis.. they are not that difficult but they are a different breed of cat and they're totally different you'll do just fine and you'll enjoy the process guaranteed hey!!!!!!

Hi Jamie, happy turkey day! (eve), I have a '68 340 barracuda, (upgraded to 3/8" fuel line), I hope to, at some point, install a fuel return line. I would like to use a factory style , I think, fuel separator? canister like mopar used on the hemi, and big blocks. They have a welded(?) on bracket that bolts to the block, (I think), and is a solid connection. I would like to do the same, but small blocks and big blocks are a different animal, so? I know you're taking that canister off that hemi and I am wondering if you wouldn't mind taking a few minutes to physically check, on one of the small block cars you have, if there is a way/bolt hole, or reasonably safe area on a small block to mount one of those stock style fuel canisters? (and, yes, I know good ones are insanity priced, at $50 bucks), stupid , yes, but I kind of like the idea/look of the factory canister, and how it has a bracket that solidly mounts to "something". Thank you Sir, enjoy Thanksgiving with all your friends and family!

The idle fuel bowl vent valve is there for a reason, capping it off defeats its purpose. Automotive carburetors have had idle bowl vent valves open to the atmosphere for decades without all these engine fires you speak of. The pictured enclosed idle fuel bowl vent nipple would be correct for ’70 California production with the mandated Evaporative Control System. Would have been plumed to the breather as was the hardline running back to the fuel tank vapor separator.
@DeadDodgeGarage3 күн бұрын
1) All* carburetor float bowls are indeed vented to atmosphere, but at a higher point than that nipple, generally through some sort of baffle, and always inside the air cleaner assembly. That is not the typical atmospheric vent, and capping it would have zero effect on the regular bowl vent system. 2) Yes, you are correct in that this nipple is for the evap system. So again, just to drive my point home… it should never be vented to atmosphere like it is. 3) This is not a California car. And the system you are referring to was implemented across the board in 1971.
@72roadrunnergtx3 күн бұрын
@ The function idle fuel bowl vent has nothing to do with the main bowl vents, capping it defeats its intended purpose. ECS was first mandated in ‘70, California only, likely a ‘71 carb then. To retain the function of the idle bowl vents valve, it needs to be open to the atmosphere if not running a functioning ECS. Just as previous years.

@DeadDodgeGarage4 күн бұрын
Negative - from the factory, the idle passages on the front carb are blocked, and it idles on the rear carb only. I can tell you from experience this leads to the gas in the front carb stagnating as it doesn’t go anywhere unless you’re far enough into the throttle to open the front carb, which as you might imagine rarely happens with a car like this these days. The front carb on this car has been modified with a kit to allow for functioning and adjustable idle circuits. Instead of the typical thumb-adjustable screws, they are tiny recessed flat heads.
