Another day, another long abandoned, slightly broken classic Chrysler product.This particular Plymouth has a funky package that adds paisley interior fabric and vinyl top, and what seems like a pretty rare and wild option for the 70s - headlight washers. Always remember, b4 you set your eyebrows on fire, clean the carburetor out first, to avoid flames, I learned a Helluva lesson, my brows just grew back after 27 years!!! My Dad had a '71 Sport Fury like that, TX-9 Black, with Paisley Roof and Interior, 440, 727, 8.75 rear, Beautiful ride!!! It was his retirement present from 1971 from the City of Philadelphia!!! Oh wow. That sounds like an awesome car. The flames were from a cylinder lighting off with its intake valve hanging open - a problem which fixed itself relatively quickly. Luckily this engine wasn’t covered in rat turds, mouse house or gasoline at the time. That can become pretty fun, pretty fast…

I was at the All Chrysler Nationals at Carlisle last week, this is my 33rd year attending this event!!! Everyone knows me as Mopar Nate!!! I would love to me you Guys soon!!! My '72 Fury III is on the operating table, tryin' to straighten out the fusible link problem, ever since the battery was put in wrong!!! Other than that, the car runs really strong, 440, 727, 8.75 rear, cop car wheels with caps, 255/60/15's up front, and 275/60/15's out back, looks like a true whiskey runner, especially with the Gray primer paint!!! I also have a '74 Charger SE, someone gave to me!!! Very sweet car, no rust, red with white top and interior, road wheels, 318, automatic, slapstick!!! I know. I kinda thought they were largely gone because they aren’t just parked all over anymore, like they were when I started in the hobby. But there really seem to be a lot left. I am also in a unique position at Rocket, where there are several other people constantly looking for good projects and dragging them in. That helps. I’ve heard it’s very similar in Florida - they’re hard to come by, and expensive.

My mother had a '69 4-door post Fury. It was a great car. Unfortunately, in 1974 at 2am, coming from my girlfriend's house, about 1 week before I was actually going to get the car from my mother, I hit a tree and totaled it. The road was covered in wet leaves and I skidded. There's a coda to the story. We decided to take whatever money the insurance would give us, short of a total, and repair it. Mysteriously, the car was stolen from the body shop that night. As with most things, I wish I knew then what I know now. I looked at the car with the body shop owner. If memory serves (and mine is quite good) the thing that the body shop guy pointed to, to show that the frame was bent was, in fact, the right frame rail, which is easily replaceable.

Dang. That’s a bummer. Yes, they’re easily replaced. The entire front subframe, or “stub,” is bolted in on these cars. I only know that now because they’re sitting around everywhere at Rocket. Haha.

I helped a friend pull a 383 out of a 69 Fury once and always thought the Fury was kind a big and boxes and not that good looking but there something about them that grows on you to where you say hey that's kind cool.

Another fun successful will it run. Thanks for the entertainment. In 1971 my family took a tour of the western US in a 69 Fury 4 door post. It was a 4 door ex State Patrol car replete with the 440 interceptor. It did admirably well. I even got my license in that car!

I sometimes feel guilty for all the Fury's, Newport's and New Yorkers I robbed of their power train's and sent to the scrapper but they donated to a good cause for B and E bodys and even a few A's that I converted to big blocks!

I love the paisley vinyl top. I hada 1973 Newport with a 400 4 bbl, had a highway gear, 70 in 1st, 100 in 2nd, never had the balls to see how fast it would go. 8 MPG in city, 16 on highway(with cruise on). My brother had room in the back(he's 6'7") and if you had a road trip you could get 6 or 7 ppl in the carwhich saved lots of money. I'm sure glad that UTG gave you a shout out, you deserved a free plug from him(or any Mopar guy).

Years ago while in college I wrecked my pickup and needed something to drive. Well we had this 84 gran fury for sale that had sat for a long time. I thrashed on it for a weekend and got it ready to drive back to school. The transmission didn't want to shift correctly the first hundred miles or so. Those highway rear end gears didn't care lol.. I could still sort of keep up with traffic in 2nd gear. Got me back to class at least.

I love these old Plymouth Fury’s my parents had a 67 , my dad was a Mopar man and like father like son. When I took driver’s education in high school it was in a 1972 Fury they sure were some smooth riding cars. Comfortable on the highway but not on the wallet 😂

My 71 is a fury III. I like the 2 door. I was lucky. The old man who owned it took the top off before it rotted out the car. it's got the 383 in it, 43k miles I think. He kept it up over the years, but it sat outside. The paint it beat up, but there's no cancer. I'm gonna go drive it right now actually. I love it.

My grandfather was co owner of a couple of Dodge dealerships in Sothern California and when he retired he owned an all black sport fury 440 supercomando a beigh satellite with the 360 and a chrysler cordoba in mint green with the Corinthian leather inside to match. Not sure about the color scheme, that was his going out car and was only driven on special occasions.... brings back memories of camping in the high Sierra's seing this old fury as he used the fury to tow his Prowler travel trailer, awsome content, Dodge will never die garage is a better name for this channel!

Thumbs up! This brought back some memories, I had a 70 Fury intercepter. It was a 4 door, but equipped with a factory 440 350HP engine, certified speedo and 15x7 cop wheels. The motor was whipped, but still had alot of power and you couldn't kill it. That was 1979 and the purchace price 125.00.

I had a '71 Newport coupe, 360 2bbl 265 hp. 3.28:1 rear end. I really liked that car. Ran so smooth and that 1 finger power steering never forget it. 9mpg was what I remember about it.

Sometimes at car shows, you'd think that all cars were 2 door coupes/hardtops back in the 60's or 70's... Reminds me of moonrunners. Used to be one of them in Regent where I live. It was a bronze color and Had a 318 with dual exhaust and glasspacks. It started out as a family car and was passed down the line through 3 sons.

That 360 is the best one to get! Flat-top pistons (the only "high" compression 360!) and the 340 sand molds used for the block, so 4.100" bores possible!! I had a '71 SportFury with the (one year only) 383-2bbl cast crank engine. I cured all that impotence with a MoPar .430" PurpleShaft and intake/carb from a '72 Fury Pursuit 400HP (one year only TQ intake with NO EGR provision!). LOVED that car, it had 2.76 gears and rode like a dream, with cold A/C even (living in Georgia requirement!). I raided a nearby junkyard for a 1970 double-bulge hood and added the reflective "383" decals on each side. Wish I had kept it, but it had crunchy Chicago rust in the quarters/trunk and under the gator-grain vinyl top, so I sold it to a friend-in-need. Loved the concave back glass (Dart-like, as you stated) much better than the VIP/GT bulge-out backlight!

Oh wow! I thought it had better compression but I didn’t know the particulars. I didn’t get to run it long obviously, but this one sure sounded happy. Very cool. I’ve also never seen a cast crank 383. I have seen a forged crank ‘72 400 - whether that was original or not, I don’t know yet.

@@DeadDodgeGarage Yes, the pistons are 1-year only 1971 items, all other years (including Magnums) are dished. The compression was advertised at "9.2" I believe, by Chrysler. I have a '71 rotating assembly that I have used in a '79 block (the '71 block was used in a 4.080" bore 418 stroker) and now it's in a '90s Magnum block with a hydraulic roller lifters/spider and RHS Magnum heads and a modest cam (no valve reliefs). The cast crank 383 was a durability thing I'm thinking, as the 360 was being introduced all cast crank and they figured BBs were next. There WERE forged crank 400s most certainly, in 4spd B-bodies and trucks. I had a '72 D100 NP435 2wd with one and a '72 RR A833 as well. A '72 Charger 400HP auto was cast, however. The real jewel in my Fury upgrades was the Thermoquad intake with zero provision for EGR, I've never personally seen another one in all my MoPar days. By '73 all passenger car BBs were TQ and EGR I believe. 1972 440s in my experience had Holley carbs but 400s were TQ, go figure!

I think the paisley top and seats look pretty good. from a distance you don't notice the top is not solid color and up close the pattern looks classy. The original Gran Coupe had different color paisley I think.

The weather can wear you out. Too hot or too cold or too rainy. It would be nice if you had some pole barns to work under for the rain. Right now in Florida, it's way too hot and humid to do a lot of work outside. The only mech stuff I did today was fix a 30 year old lawn-mower. Still runs great. That Grand Fury is a great car. Back in 1971 it was great value. Luxury and style and without the big price tag. That 360 sounds good. With some fresh oil and wires and plugs and rebuilt carb and some highway, it probably would run like near new and be very reliable. I wouldn't say to restore it but fix the main stuff and everything else as cheap as possible. I used a low pile lightweight rug for a headliner. It doesn't need to be all original. Just presentable and functional. It's still a ton of work.

Totally agree. I do usually try to work in the buildings on hot days - but these not-actual-job revival projects kinda have to stay outside. At least on that Coronet the other day I was under one of those metal shed things. It was “hot” which actually means 87 degrees here. Of course when it hits 100 in these parts, the entire world ends. Usually our summers are mostly quite mild, and often… damp. Not so much this year.

Subscribed about a month ago and love the channel. I learned to drive in a 77 Plymouth fury wagon. Seem to remember it had 360 2 barrel. Car was bought in Ontario. Moved to Alberta in 80 and moved back to Ontario in 84. She died around 90 but a lot of memories in that car.

That's exactly what I was talking about in my last comment - back in the day, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) had literally ***FLEETS*** of these Furies that were used for Driver Education. We rode around 6 to a car (Instructor & 5 students) & swapped driving duties. If you can parallel park that land yacht, you can park anything. Memories of pre-embargo days.

He bought it from my uncle. It too was a 71 360 2 bbl metallic blue paint and in the sunlight it look little purple. He drove it for 5 years then my sister drove till it was t boned and the frame was bent. My Dad always drove Mopar after that car till the day he died. So again thank you for making this video

Those 'C' bodies were great! Same '71 2-door red-ish orange w/off-white top & interior, power bulge hood & big block was owned by one HS friend, he sold it to a different HS friend so it was around for a few years. Another HS friend had a side gig of buying up nice 2-door 318 powered B-bodies, then going to city, state & county towing auctions to score big-block Cop Cars & 4-doors in good shape to rebuild the 318 cars into big-block Muscle Cars and pocket a few bucks.

It’s fascinating to watch these videos having been surrounded by Mopars growing up in the Detroit area. My dad was a draftsman at Chrysler Design from about 1955-80. I was proudly told he worked on the “hard points” of the body. Once in the 70s we went to a family day tour at his work. I still remember seeing a full-size clay model. It is fantastic to see the “work” of thousands of real people like my father survive, that it is still appreciated, and younger men with knowledge and dedication to keep these cars running and driving. The good old days! my 2nd car was a 71 Sport Suburban (wagon) liked it so much my 3rd and 4th cars were 72 Gran Fury and 73 Fury III. That was in the early 80's. Less than a year ago I found a 73 Gran Fury and had together it although I may have slightly overpaid to me it was worth it being a long time C body guy. When were were just tooling around the area we would take my 76 Camaro but whenever we would go on Road Trips we would load 6-8 guys into the New Yorker and we would hit the road.

The Fury was introduced as a performance trim package in 1956 off the Belvedere and not becoming its own model until 3 years later. Through the 60s the Fury went on an evolution gradually turning into a low priced Eldorado.(That is Cadillac, I know) but the name Cadillac and performance were never used in the same sentence. Had Chrysler stayed true to the Furys original concept the it would have evolved into the GTX.

@@DeadDodgeGarage 56 through 58 Furys also had gold anodized aluminum accents that contrasted from the silver accents sported by the Belevedere. In essence Christine is actually a Belvedere. Another Mopar of that Era is the lesser known 1957 Desoto Adventurer with the 345 cid Hemi with dual Carter AFBs producing 1 hp per cubic inch of displacement.

I "officially" learned to drive in one of these land yachts. In the late '60s/ early '70s (before the 1st fuel crisis), the LA Unified School District had a fleet of these Furys (without the paisley) assigned to all High Schools, for taxpayer-funded driver training courses. We would pack 5 students & an instructor into each car, & go driving for 2 weeks, then a week in a semi-trailer "drivving simulator". Once you learned to parallel park in one of these, you could parallel park the Queen Mary.

Oh dang. That’s a bummer. For whatever reason, we almost never see stuck valves here. I’ve had people comment and say that I should be pulling covers and lubricating them, but… yeah I basically don’t have to do that. Oh man. Evan loves Traildusters. It was discovered the 360's with the Holley 2245 over time had an idle and drivability issue. The culprit ended up being the air cleaner stud. Since the stud was only threaded into the air horn of the carb, the tightening of the wingnut caused the air horn to warp causing an air leak between the air horn and main body of the carb. The fix that Chrysler came out with was a bridge kit that eliminated the stud threading into the air horn and had a stud that was welded onto the bridge. Also included was thicker carb gasket to take up the warping in the carb.

The only better C-Body than a Plymouth Fury 4-door is a Fury (aka Suburban) Station Wagon, like we grew up with ('69 Custom Suburban, 383-2V, glacier blue with blue interior, rear storage) If there's any way to swing it and room to put it in our post retirement home I _will_ get a really nice Fury 4 door hardtop or wagon... though I'll make a 2-door exception for a Sport Fury GT or Hurst Edition Chrysler... Going to be old by the time the Challenger is done and it is a low car for ingress/egress, the Fury will be easier to get in and out. Makes a great daily (for a retiree) driver while the Challenger does weekend duty

Yes! I like it. I do really want a Sport Fury GT as well… I really like the lines. But the sedans and wagons are good. Excellent highway cruisers. Load the entire house into it and hit the road.

Friend had an early 70's 4-door Fury. Fit a 55gal drum, amps, smoke machine, instruments, and misc stuff in a fully closed & latched trunk. The old wagons had a 7,000 LBS tow rating. SUV? HA!

Ahhhh the ol ballast resistor spend 80.00 on my 74 Duster only to find out it was a 2.00-part, a Ballast resister TAAA DAAA ever since I carried one plus the size nut driver in the glove box. Pointed it out too many o Mopar-ians in my travels. an easy fix a well-known secret, loved Plymouths still to this day.

Oh yeah. I’ve only ever had one resistor fail I think. Maybe two? Maybe my memory sucks and it’s like ten. But I too like to carry spares - and if it’s a points car, points and condenser.

Going to 18:40 always preferred the 1970 Fury to the '71. Barring 2dr coupes '70s still retained the front quarter windows standard fit. They were gone completely by the time the 1971s came along. Small things like this to me do make a lot of difference.

I had a 1972 DG dodge phoenix and I loved it. Here in Australia they are a Dodge but based off the Plymouth Fury. I would like to see you tackle a Imperial, one of the same era as this Fury. I know that they are large, ugly but they sport the big block mopar as you would know. I’m enjoying your channel heaps and can only imagine here in Australia being surrounded by these Mopar’s. Keep it up 👍🏻 The Dodge Phoenix’s here first come here in the late 50’s and back then even in the States they were known as the Dodge Phoenix. The Plymouth name was in small numbers here but Dodge had a good name from its trucks and the name continued on the large car’s. They come over from Canada 🇨🇦 as a knock down kit and built up into RHD vehicles in Melbourne. We have large open roads and these cars drove well and soaking up the long miles and coping well with rough roads they did sell well considering that they are very expensive at the time to buy. My DG 1972 Phoenix was the four door hardtop so it was the 383 but they only come in two barrel carby.

The paisley top and interior was known as the "Gran Sedan" package. There was also a Fury "Gran Coupe" in which the vinyl top and interior were paisley. Later this became the "Plymouth Gran Fury" starting in about 1975 and continuing until 1989 (though I don't think there was a Gran Fury in 1978 or 1979). A friend of mine had a 71 Fury III sedan, but it did not have the Gran Sedan option. It was a BIG car in length but it only had a 318 in it. It seemed fast enough with that engine.

I owned a 71 Chrysler New Yorker 2 door hardtop with 440 v8 and factory tow package for 14 years. I really enjoyed that car. I had been following this car on Craigslist/Facebook and was seriously considering purchasing it, but was not quite sure I wanted. To drop the money on it to bring it up to driver status. I was wondering what happened to it as it disappeared from the listings. So when I saw it here on KZbin, I had to see if this was a savable car. It is. I was really surprised to see it has the headlight washers. It would be interesting to see if this car is brought back to driver status.

I took my driver's ed classes in high school in 1969 Plymouth Fury. Most were automatic V8 but the stick shift Fury what is a slant 6 3 speed on the tree

When I took drivers ed, they had two stick shift cars , I think they were Pintos, for those kid's who's parents wanted them to learn stick. It seems like there were not any takers. The teachers said manuals were basically dead in the US. This was about 1976.

My Dad bought my Mom a 2 door sport fury three with a blue top and blue seats from the Goodyear proving grounds in San Angelo Texas .It came with new tires. My Dad latter gave it to my wife who thought it was too big to parallel park in Santa Monica Ca so we traded it in for a VW Rabbit . I saw the old Fury with the trunk lid removed being used as a gardeners make shift pick up truck.driving to a job . It was a dumb move because the VW engine kept getting a blown head gasket because it was deisel and they were no good.

They are humongous and they don’t have the appeal that muscle cars do, but they’re cool old iron, often with big block power, and they’re generally a lot more affordable. I think they’re cool now!
