ABANDONED 1969 Chrysler, will it run AND drive after 44 years?

Dad and me pick up this 1969 Chrysler with a 383 magnum from the factory. It’s been sitting in the desert for 40 solid years. Last registered in 1978. It was parked not even 10 years old. Will it run will it drive first start in 4 decades . Mopar guys should love this !

I had a 79 Dodge Salon wagon. With a 383. I wasn't smart enough in 85 to ask whether it was stock, it was a police transport and command vehicle

The 383 is an awesome engine imo. I had a 1970 Roadrunner with a 383 and an A833 four speed manual with a posi and I put mid-length headers on it, a dual tunnel ram with two Holley 600 double pumpers, a cam (I don't remember which unfortunately), a full exhaust, a MSD 6AL ignition box with a MSD distributor and coil, full 3" duals with Flowmaster Super 44s, and it was a really powerful car for it's size. I sold it to my buddy who was going to restore it and he replaced all of the floor pans, the trunk pan, put a new fuel tank in it, did all the bodywork, put it in primer, and then he sold it to a local guy who owns a Mopar only muscle car dealership. I still kick myself in the rear for selling it.

My grandfather had 2 of the '69 Chrysler New Yorkers w/383 cu. in. engines. The one was just a parts car that my grandfather bought from an individual. Not a junkyard. He bought his first one used from an elderly person that no longer drove. He had it until he passed away.

Travis you check fluid in a Torqueflite warm idling in NEUTRAL not Park. You will be quarts low if you check in Park.

The "thumb wheel" under the padded dash is for the radio front to rear speaker control. The A/C is factory installed (H 51, manual control). Over the years I have had 3 '69 Sport Fury's, two with 383 HP, one 383 2 barrel, a '69 Monaco Wagon, 383 HP, PW, P Seat, DUAL A/C, 67 Town And Country 6 passenger wagon 440 (original), Dual A/C, tilt PW, Window sticker, build sheet, one owner car, sat in a carport for 40 years that I bought from the original owner's widow. 2 67 Imperial LeBaron 4 door, both had dual A/C, one auto temp, one manual control, 2 67 New Yorker 2 door HT's 440, A/C PW P Seat, one '68 New Yorker 4 dr HT, 440, Power everything, factory stereo AM/FM radio, tilt, cruise, P Locks, trunk, cornering lights etc. I like the mid/late '60's Mopars because sometimes they would LOAD a car with options Good luck with your latest find.

My dad bought a1 year old used 1970 Chrysler Newport. It was a 4 door hardtop. A big car for sure. I used to work on it and drive it to school. I am amazed you got that old 69 running! They used to have H78/15 tire size back then. Rear leaf springs with angled shocks and front torsion bars. Smooth ride with decent handling for a car that was 224" long. 1969 was the first year for the fuselage style C body.

I'm in eastern Canada. My uncle from PEI always had a huge Chrysler and in the summer he would load up the family and come visit with one of these hauling a pop-up trailer. When I saw this video I had to watch it!

That was a great car in its day. Super well built & comfortable. My 1st car was a 1969 Chrysler Town & Country station wagon. It was quite a battle wagon - heavy, comfortable, and versatile. It’s a very close brother to the car you’re working on here. Mine was a 383 2-barrel with A-727 torqueflite automatic. It was my main transportation car from 1985 to 1993. On the older chrysler products, if they move while cold, yet stop moving once warmed up, it needs a transmission filter...I bought quite a few chrysler products dirt cheap due to people thinking the transmission was out...

Can't mistake the sound of those Mopar starters lol. I bought a friend's, grandpa's 1966 Dodge Polara back in the 90's. It was a 4 door, 383, robin egg shell blue car that ran great. Congrats on the Newport! Tip: ALWAYS keep extra ballist resistors in the glove box!

My Father bought this exact style Newport brand new in 1969,it was his first new car in the US and he had just emigrated a year earlier. His hard work paid off,he was able to get a brand new car.It was a red exterior, and as children we wend on many rides in the big beast.Thanks for the memories.

Love it !! Not only does it run but it doesn't have a 60 year-old vinyl top moldering away and rotting the roof. Once you get it roadworthy you'll have to invest in a Botany 500 suit to wear when you drive it around town. As an aside, I hope you find a decent drivers side door and good fuel tank for the International. Keep going !!

I like the vintage spark plug machine! The B7 blue is a great color, our family had a B7 blue Plymouth Fury Suburban wagon, and it was among the earliest cars I drove with virtually the same steering wheel, so it brings back a lot of memories. Awesome dreadnought cruiser that is begging to roll again. And I like sedans also, yes, it means friends to me also! Great video! Whitewalls for sure. Road trip to DFW! You can fly back......

I had a tiny plastic version of the same thing. It was about the size of a baseball and had two clips to clip to a 12 volt source , typically the car battery. It had one setting... blast with sand. It didn't blow the sand off afterward You had to wipe some off. I got it at Pep Boys in the 80's. I agree with cleaning spark plugs rather than replacing if they are just oily or stained not worn off.

My parents bought a 69, from a car dealer in Indiana in 1975. It was white with black top, 383 two barrel.After mother died in 76, the car made numerous trips between Indiana and Tennessee with no problems.I miss that car.

I just watched your your tube channel on the 1969 Chrysler. I enjoyed watching you bring it back to life. . I have and bought my 1969 Chrysler Newport Custom when I was 15. I payed 600.00 for it at a chevy dealer in there used car lot. I still have it today and I am 57 years old now. It's white with a black vinyl top, 4 door hard top., 383. the options are power steering, power brakes. vacuum operated trunk latch. am/fm 8 track. duel front power seats. tilt and telescope, cruise control. Also as your dad said that they want you to have a cigarette when driving the car, besides the 2 ash trays up front it has the optional cigarette lighters in the back one on each side of the trim panel between the two doors. My VW Beetle died just a few weeks before I planned to spend a year out of the country, so I picked up a 68 Newport for the interim. What a change from the Beetle to the Chrysler Land Yacht! Left the Chrysler with my Dad. A few weeks later, a tornado blew through the street intersection where he had stopped for a light. That heavy Chrysler just sat through the wind with no problem, but a mile down the road all the windows blew out from the change in pressure. A great $350 dollar car!

Nice! That dial is for the rear seat speaker, yes the AC compressor is original Chrysler, used up to around 1979 or 1980 or so. On the tires, for me, I'd go whitewall, raised letter tires to me are for Road Runners, Chargers, Mustangs etc.

That's the factory York ac compressor. We had a 69 2dr hardtop that my dad restored. I loved that car. It was promised to me to be my first car, but sadly my parents sold it. They look sweet with either the slotted chrome Chrysler rally wheels, or the deep dish Mopar steelies with police hubcaps

Fender tag codes: B51 power brakes, G11 Tinted glass (usually ordered with AC) Others have commented that the lug nuts were left handed on the left side. But, many 1968 and 69 C bodies had front drums with heavy finning facing the wheel. Which means 90 percent of wheels do NOT fit. If you have those drums, ( many were swapped out years ago), there are only three wheels I know of that fit. 1. The plain steel wheels it was built with. 2 C body steel "Road Wheels" (ten slot) 3 B body Rallye wheels (10 hole) Personally, I think the C body Road wheels look great with that car. They don't reproduce them, but they are not too hard to find. They are 15x6 usually, which suggests a 215 or 225 75 r15 tire. White walls are my preference over raised white letters.

My father inherited this same Chrysler Newport but in burgundy red. We drove it from Iowa to Vermont many many years ago. After years of sitting he sold the car, it made me sad to see it go. The car was in great condition, little rust but nothing that couldn’t be fixed. At the time I didn’t have the means to buy it myself as I love working on old cars. I went to automotive school back in 86 to 87. It’s nice to see one of these being brought back to life. Thank you

Love the 1960s Chrysler c bodies! Great car! That does look like an original Chrysler AC compressor. By the way, the high performance engines were referred to as magnums if they were in a Dodge. In a Chrysler they were called TNT motors.

I love what you guys do with these old cars. In the early 60s I worked in a garage here in England when a compulsory roadworthiness test was introduced for cars 10 years of age and older. I witnessed panic, and classic pre-war MGs, Austin, Morris, Ford, Standard, Lanchesters and the like were sent to the scrapyard for no good reason. I bought a 1934 Standard Big 9 for £15 but could not afford to run it. I sold it for the same price. I wonder if any survived?

Cool car, I remember my first Mopar back when I was 15 years old it was a 68 Roadrunner with a 383 high performance the motor wasn't that great actually it was pretty being on snapped a timing chain bent valves and bent pushrods. Anyway I went on the hunt and I just happened to work weekends at a local junkyard and in came a highway patrol car that had been totaled, I got the 440 Interceptor engine for free. Intern I did some work for the guy junking cars there at his lot, well I was on my way I tore that motor down all the way but all new parts for it Pistons cam you name it it went in it and I balanced and blueprinted it had a transmission built for it although the tranny was good I was going to drag race it Street and track so I needed something that would hold up needless to say by the time I was done with that it was $750 horsepower three deuces and I had about $10,000 in the drivetrain. It was a mid 10 second street car and that's saying a lot back in that day no computers none of that crap but I raced it for three some odd years and then finally sold it cuz I wanted something different that motor held up never even blinked. I can tell you Chrysler built some of the best engines back then I think besides the 440 I love my 340 Duster and the last car that I had was a 318 High Performance swinger that was a cool car too but I had so many in between I just can't even count them on both hands and they were all good. Your car kind of reminds me of that car I bought off the neighborhood little old lady it was a 68 I believe it was a 68 Sport Fury with a 318 and a vinyl top and you know she parked that thing thinking the transmission was bad and all it was was the rear seal on the drive shaft man what a Coos Cruiser two-door it was a metallic Type green even the roof was Green but man what a cool car you could jump in that and just go go all day long I never souped it up or nothing it was my cruising car. When I was about 17, I bought a 57 DeSoto Adventrurer. It had the big hemi motor with dual 4 bbls carbs. It had a/c and the auto trans was controlled by a push button panel on the left of the steering wheel. It was one of the neatest cars I ever owned. I would crawl underneath it and crank the torsion bars down so it would ride at about 4 inches off the ground. The cops would pull me over and I never got a ticket for being too low because I could raise it back up while they watched. I'm 80 years old now but that car stands out in my mind.

I had almost the EXACT same car and year AND color, second hand. It was a great ride. Brakes always seemed to be the only problem. The large capacity rear seat is still fondly remembered.

The 383 has so much power that the AC compressor is not much of a load on the engine. I had a 68 Dodge Polara with 383 & AC plus automatic transmission and it got 19mpg on the highway with AC on and driving 70mph. The Chrysler has a 4BBL carb so it may not get 19mpg on the highway but may be close to it. I also had a 73 New Yorker with a 440 and it would get 17mph at 70mph with AC on.

I dont care what anyone says that 69 4 door is a work of art. The Chrome is Substantial on that model and the interior and instrumentation was one of the best of All the makers. Many gauges,switches and creature comforts galore. Excellent video and a Stellar Cruiser too Rebuild/Mod and Roll..

Hello AGAIN. Okay, your tires are P225 75R15 which are you can find pretty much anywhere EXCEPT in whitewall style. They'll mostly be black wall or white letter tires so you may have to look around. I think black wall wouldn't look that great so maybe white letter, huh? Best of luck! Looking forward to updates 😉

My dad bought a 69 300 2 dr fuselage coupe new that year when I was 12. His was white, with black interior, black vinyl top, with a 440 magnum. I believe the 440 the only engine available in the 300. The 383 was available in lesser models. I remember hearing him talk about the differences in people who bought Cadillacs and Chryslers, with Cadillacs being flashy and Chryslers being ‘quiet luxury’. By today’s standards, they were not fast, but it sure seemed like it was. I remember we were driving from Texas to California - it was about 2am and we were in either New Mexico or Arizona. He kept trying to turn on the high beams with the floorboard button. After I turned on the radio, we realized there were 2 floorboard buttons - one for the high beams, and the second would advance the radio station. Go with the whitewalls.

I just learned of your channel yesterday and have already enjoyed several videos. I have strong memories of my Dad’s 1971 Chrysler Newport. When we first looked at the car, it was on the dealer’s showroom floor. Beautiful car in a kind of light blue metallic with medium blue vinyl roof and cloth interior. 383 engine as well. It was a very good and strong running car with a good transmission and very comfortable ride. My folk had it until 1978 when it was traded in for a ‘78 Ford LTD. Good luck with the Newport. Well, This is one of those cars you can go either way, white walls or white letters… I bet she will look more 60’s if you removed the outside trim and repaint medium blue. I’m a “Purists” my self, White Walls-medium width (1 &3/4/ to 2”) width (not those regular thin whites) and trim is is preserved and replaced where missing. Once again this car can be whatever you want it to be. Both choices are terrific O.E.M. or Street. real nice.

Factory A/C that is the RV2 compressor. I had a '72 New Port with a 400. It was my Buford Pusser car. Had a '65 Plymouth Sport Fury, 383 magnum and still have the engine. Had a '71 Plymouth Satalite 440 mag and a slap stick.

MAN! The sound of that Chrysler starter really makes me miss my old 1983 Ramcharger with a 360 LA, Thermoquad, and A727 3 speed auto. That thing wasn't fast, and it was bone stock, but it was fun to drive, it had 33x12.50s on it, it would climb anything, and it had alot of torque, but it would vapor lock after being driven for more than 30 minutes, and I didnt know anything about carbs at that point in my life, so I swapped in a 360 Magnum, and I never got it running. I ended up paying $750 for the 360 Magnum, tore it apart, cleaned everything up, put new bearings and rings in it, new gaskets, sandblasted and painted everything, and I got rid of it before I could get it running because I was a dumb kid and I just couldn't figure it out. I should've just kept the LA, fixed the vapor lock issue, put headers and a full exhaust on it, a cam, replaced the Thermoquad with an Edelbroken, fixed the rusted quarters, and rocked it. I'd still be rocking it today if I would've known better.

I've always liked the fuselage C bodies! All those MkIIIs would make nice parts cars, but restoration is near impossible due to lack of parts or the cost is so high you'll never recover the investment. Good luck finding parts to replace those crusty soft parts from roasting in the desert. I've wanted one for years, but the more I've looked, the less likely it is I'm going to get one. Even if you find one complete, when the electrical, or vacuum operated parts fail (they will) there's no one repairing or making them anymore. You're stuck hunting for expensive used, sketchy, working parts, or ridiculously expensive NOS parts that due to age, might still not work.

My dad had a ‘69 Chrysler New Yorker with a 440 when I was growing up, wow would that car run! The New Yorker I’m guessing was 1 step up from the Newport. Anyhow great looking cars, I think the white lettered tires look best. I agree with you I’ve always thought large cars like these look best with 4 doors.

The AC compressor might be a rebuilt unit, but is the typical two-cylinder compressor that Chrysler products used since the early 1960s. Much later (90s ?) they did change to rotary compressors from Japan. Some of these Chryslers came with rear fender skirts from the factory. I'm not sure if the 69 models did or not - check to see.

I learned to drive in Mom's 1969 Plymouth Fury III. It had a 383 2 barrel. That thing was a tank. My brother and I would load it up with boy scouts and heavy trunks, and drive 80 mph to Boy Scout Camp in the mid 1970s. It even had climate controlled A/C.

White Letters look really good. Gives it a great eye appeal. It's already a very classy car so although the White Walls look good, but those letters ecsentuate that cars muscle appeal. Looks sharp.

Full Chrysler car.... I had several. Some with left hand lug nuts and right hand lug nut on the same car. Yes I broke a few lug studs off to find out I turned left when I had to turn right to get the tire off. Love my Chrysler Newports.

My dad had almost the same Newport, his was a 1970 he had it 25 yrs. my favorite cats were mopar cars from 19668 to 1973. I used them in the taxi business, the far better than others for durably. My fave was my 1973 Newport 2 door coupe. Good road trip cars. I wish had one of them.

I had a 71 Newport 2dr hdtp. The best car I ever had. Never had a minute's trouble with it. Except, one day 30-mile I kept it for many years hoping to restore it one day, but it rusted so bad that it was unsalvageable. Everything was rusted thru. Frame, fenders, body, everything. I sold the 383 and scrapped the rest. Broke my heart.

my Dad borrowed it. He had a 72 Monaco with drive train issues. He and my Mom used it for a 30 mile trip. On the way home my car dropped the drive shaft and left them stranded 30 miles from home on the side of the highway.😆 So funny.

My parents had a '68. I was about 14 years old, it was 1973. I figured out if you turned on the emergency flashers, stood on the brake pedal and turned on the radio, it would play...no key. That car was a huge problem to keep drivable. Learned about cars helping my dad work on it.

You need to put the spring and automatic adjuster back on the drum brake. Just leave the broke cable out. The spring holds the bottom of the shoes together. It will save you heartache in the future.

When a car sits for 40 years make sure never to pull the plugs and dump oil or Marvel down into the cylinders and let it soak first. That way when it cranks over you can break a ring off or score the cylinder with rust particles from the rusted rings and clyinders and the rings will set in better and raise your compression ! It should of raised your compression by 12:1 with all dry rings and rust going up and down in the cylinders . Dont crank it over and get oil pressure first either that why when it starts there is no oil on the bearings or rings and you will score the rings and bearings for proper break in . Sounds like you have both covered pretty good ! Great job !

Bought a 69 Newport Custom in 77 for 225 red with rusty white vinyl roof fixed roof and flipped for 1000 was loaded with factory 8 track

The paint patina on the sides is so cool. Looks like wooden hills with haze and a red sundown. Will look good with some shine juice

I would of change the oil an filter before starting it . An took all plugs out an sprayed inox in the plug holes let it soak before you even tryed to see if it’s stuck. Alway start them on 2 stroke fuel ⛽️ as it helps lube it on start up . Another trick is but a heater p oint it at the sump to warm the oil better on start up . White letter tyres look better for that area . All the best 🇦🇺👍🏻
