This is a little cable newish of a topic. There was plenty of rappers that are legends or on their way that didn’t perform last year. Rappers perform for private events all the time at their discretion. Also how do we measure selling out, by number of things you do, by let down of your culture or by public of opinion of people who are upset and loud. Selling out is about forgetting who you are or what made you and/or putting your people down to move ahead.

Wow I hate to say it but I agree Jay-Z definitely has sold out but let’s think about the dynamics of this conversation, what else’s can he do he’s done everything and now he’s morphed into a whole new person and let’s face it most of his fans are in their 50’s and 60’s and given the state of the world that we live in is it safe for him I mean if he decided to do a tour most of us are going to his concerts and you guys make a great point, when I think about it. But how many of our rap icons don’t do tours anymore LL, Run DMC, minus Jam Master Jay, Wu- Tang Gang, I mean is it safe, But again I’m from Philly and I have to shout out The Roots for hosting venues in the park. Jay-Z in many regards has transcended past Hip-Hop. He is in an elite club with Warren Buffet and the Obamas. He has been business partners with major corporations Samsung, NFL, and Bacardi. He won't show up for a museum exhibition dedicated to Hip-Hop, but will have an entire library dedicated to himself. He won't celebrate something that is bigger than himself (Hip-Hop 50, 50 years of Hip Hop performances and events), and doesn't want to perform with the legends that came before him, but will show up for the Academy Awards to receive a lifetime achievement award and spit his 80+ verse at the very same show. Act like he is riding with Kaepernick to work for the NFL and perform for Tom Brady. Shawn Carter put elitism and commerce before culture long ago!
