I cried for an hour on my sofa. As a 40-year old-old man who has already lost so many. This hurt so much. I had spoken to Ka over email for years and he ALWAYS hit me back. He even read a song I wrote for my dearly departed brother and called it beautiful. How many people get to talk to their idol. Never mind them be an incredible person. People don’t give enough love to The Hermit and the Recluse. That’s one of my favorites of his. The way he keeps the Greek mythology theme throughout the album is wild. He had to have researched a ton before he went into every album. What a loss.

I have yet to fully grieve this loss. I got the news at work, when my friend sent me the post on IG. I was at a loss and the first thing I did was play "I Wish" and almost cried at the job. I first heard of Ka through y'all back when "Honor Killed the Samurai" dropped but I was 17 at the time so it didn't fully sit with me. September 2020 was when I actually got into him and I was playing Ghost of Tsushima, perfect timing since Honor is the core theme of that game and I remembered the album. From then I sat, listened and my world changed. The second I heard "Mourn at Night" I was enamored, never heard anything like it and I really had to pay attention to every little detail in his writing. I was spoiled since he also dropped "Decendants of Cain" so I had more to listen to on top of his past works. As a lover of music I could feel Ka's passion in the way he wrote and produced, it didn't take long before he took the #1 spot on my list of favorite artists of ALL TIME. I went back and watched his interviews from Red Bull to interviews on the street. Seeing he was a firefighter on top of all that and was a full time fireman, this man was working and writing masterpieces. I was tuned in to every release, I haven't felt connected to another artist this deeply before and I'm starting to tear up as I write this comment. I could say so much about this man but at the end of the day all I can do is thank y'all for introducing me to my hero. I wish I had a chance to shake his hand before he passed on

It's been such a pleasure to be able to listen to more of his music over the years, and his legacy will live on forever. Ka is from the same neighborhood my pops is from. Me and my father have a had a complicated relationship to say the least. When I was introduced to Ka through you guys it gave me a weird insight into my father’s world pov. My dad is 54 and seeing Ka’s death really hit me much like Ken. Gone too soon felt like he had so much more to give us. It’s a shame how much of the hip hop landscape doesn’t know we lost a TRUE ARTIST. We are loosing men of that generation too quickly. It's okay that he is gaining listeners after he is gone from this earth. In a perfect world, he would have been a multi-platinum artist. Then again a perfect world could never produce an artist like Ka. The yin and yang is necessary for a man like this to exist. Conflicted. Regardless, he was an artist whose work inspired people to be their best, and more listeners means more better humans as far as I'm concerned. I could never pinpoint any song or songs that would define his entire career. I think every album he dropped from Grief Pedigree on is a classic (Iron Works is fantastic but he didn't quite find his lane until GP in my opinion). One verse though that comes to mind that I personally feel might be his most complete verse is his guest spot on Navy Blue's I'm In Good Hands. He covers a lot of ground in such a small amount of time. That verse is densely packed with a range of ideas and emotions before coming full circle and leaving the listener with an uplifting feeling. Incredible. RIP to the greatest lyricist ever.

Got introduced to Ka with Grief Pedigree, and been a huge fan since I heard "I own the night, the heat's my receipt". First time I heard him must've been on Pro Tools when that dropped, but had forgotten it by the time Grief Pedigree dropped. A master in writing simple, but profound lines, while still being able to be complex and having layers to his lyrics. Never wasted a word. RIP to a true lyricist, unique artist and master of his craft. This one hit hard.

Ka was one of those artists that I admired and appreciated but would only listen to critically, not so much for casual enjoyment. That being said, the one project that actually clicked with me the most was Hermit & The Recluse - amazing project. There are very few artists that have lines that stick with me through the years. Billy Woods line on spiderhole '4 million USD hovering over some mud huts, it's nuts' or E L U C I D's repeated line on Black Garlic 'Legaleese is designed to overwhelm you'. Lines that are simple, but cut right through the bullshit and have you looking at the world through the eyes of the artist. So many KA lines have stuck with me over the years. 'To get what we need, we did what we must', 'My past bent me, see it half empty, still trying to get clean from last century'. 'Used to feel bad but then in a short time was like "fuck your family someone got rich off mine"'. And now the last one will be 'I hope it's borrowed time when my time comes'. RIP to Brownsville KA.

Like everyone else here, Ka's music changed my life and perception of rap music in a way that no one else's music has. It truly was the rap music for when I felt the most pain, sitting alone in the dark, just trying to get through some shit. His approach to writing will be an important chapter in the Hip Hop History Books. He was not just clever, he was honest on a level that many people are unable to achieve with their writing. That's why we held onto every word. I don't really want to accept his passing, and this is the first time an artist I hold sincerely close to my creative heart has died. You guys put me on only in 2020 with descendants of cain, which is my favorite album of his. Only in the past 4 years I've listened to his catalog and his music has done a lot for me. I think one of the best ways to honor someone is to allow one of their best traits to live on in you, so as a writer myself I will try to be as pure and sincere of an artist as he was.

I was introduced to Ka's work through this platform. I stay a short train ride from Brownsville, and have always associated his music with his neighborhood. Im always reluctant to go to or pass by Brownsville tbh, its probably the most eary, keep your head on a swivel type of hood in BK. The black and white videos make all the sense. Its raw, gritty, and almost like an ode to the past ( gentrification hasnt hit Brownsville as much as say, Bedstuy. It feels like how Brooklyn mightve still felt in the 90s). Whenever i would play a Ka album or watch a reaction id have to stop because it felt too real. Im ashamed i never gave the music more time. I started following him on twitter as the latest album dropped. Was very endearing to see all the smiles at the meet and greet. RIP Ka. Brownsville lost its brightest light.

I was first introduced to Ka via reddit lol. I saw that black and white album cover for Honor Killed the Samurai and it just immediately caught my attention. It started up and I hear the Japanese movie sample and he just starts rapping. Never heard a dude rap with quite that monotone style like he did and also over such sparse beats. Part of me wanted him to go harder on his delivery, but then I just got on board with his style and now I see it as his strength. HKtS is still my favorite Ka album, but Descendants of Cain is my second favorite. As I've gotten older his lyrics have continued to deepen and resonate more with me. He speaks about his struggles growing up in Brownsville, but also speaks on so much life shit about getting older and maturing in general. Only recently did I notice how little he actually cusses in his albums. I think Ka was truly one of the best lyricists out there. Not just of underground hip hop, not just of this era, but of all time. RIP Ka.
