I'm completely with Feefo on this. The album is not deep, fans make it seem like that and hype it up like crazy. Fuck them though. Personally, I loved how Cole portrayed the life of his boy and showed how a man can change through certain events. Also, just the idea that this album is basically a tribute aimed at the daughter of his boy is so sweet and amazing to me. Nappy beats? Maybe. I really enjoyed them. Smooth beats, some a little harder than the other. Everything just fit to me. Great album. Solid 8/10.

I feel like when J Cole first came into the game he was maybe the only lyricist at the time in the mainstream.People hyped him up as the " chosen one."So since he's is the chosen one everytime he puts out music in this climate where lyricism isn't popular in the mainstream, his music gets more praise that it should because his fan base compares him to everyone else that's out. The same goes for Kendrick Lamar.

i have a year old and one month old daughter and she's mine pt2 actually makes me shed tears EVERY TIME i've listened to it because it takes me to different moments in the past year. the joy of having a young princess is incomparable. its a brand new feeling of love thats unlike any other and j cole beautifully depicts that in the song. the crying in the background takes me back to the first time i laid eyes on her in that hospital room when the doctor held her up, the references to changing diapers, the heartbeat takes me back to the sonograms and ultrasounds before i was blessed with her presence, everything about this song is incredible. great work J Cole. I can see how this album can be boring or slow to someone who isnt married and doesnt have children but to me this shit hit home like a bulls eye.

@Bartholomule018 жыл бұрын
untitled As good as Kendrick is, he's not really the best. Maybe best to get grammy nods/wins in a long time but there are so many great Rappers outside of the mainstream. When you include underground groups there is a huge gap between Cole and Kdot. They aren't reallt close to each other.

@marsrover58988 жыл бұрын
I agree with myke, it takes a very charismatic MC to pull you in and steal your attention with such mellow production and charisma is what J Cole lacks so much of. Oh and the "head game stronger than a few excedrin" line was one of the worst lines i've heard this year, those type of struggle bars are Views level of terrible.
@kashstory8 жыл бұрын
I agree, but don't get it twisted though. Cole has charisma, he just aint got so much of it. The production was still too mellow and tame for the actual charisma he possessed. If there were some more exciting beats the project would be so much better. While some of Cole's bars are weak, the verses still hit overall. Street poetic dope stuff.
@Romagical8 жыл бұрын
cole can be at least decently charismatic on some songs here and there. But his laid back yet still real af style is part of his appeal imo

Mars Rover I mean I can understand it not being someone's cup of tea. It isn't anything amazing that say - Lupe or Kendrick would spit, but y'know they still do it for me. I feel he actually had the lyrics, all he needed to do was pick the right beats and he wasn't able to do it. I'm sure the lyrics would've been even more impactful with the right beats.

Whats up guys dope review! Just wanted to clarify/point sumn cool out with the confusion on ole girl in "DejaVu" , beezy was right about "Dreams" from the warm up having a sequel but it's actually "Power Trip" from born sinner that is the sequel to that song. The video and song lyrics refer to it as well. Deja Vu is apart of the linear plot of this concept exclusively, so thats probably when he first met ole girl.

DEHH SHOULD READ My take on the album that might make a little more sense to Myke. I think you guys missed the tie in that each track has for each other. I just became a fan of j cole on forest hills drive, but i pay specific attention to placement of tracks. Starting with ' For Whom the bell tolls' I think he's talking about his world falling apart and feel a specific change coming due to some dark karma. It can kind of connect to him and his homie bc from coles perspective in his documentary eyes, he specifically talks about how he wants to drop the most realest shit that connects to his personal life while he's on the pedestal myke is talking about. His friends perspective is brought to attention later in '4 your eyes only' and j cole talks about his friend coming to him talking about a feeling he has from his karma or whatever. 'Immortal' goes into the beginning of the story from where it all started. Being a cocky, young dude getting money, which can also tie into both his and his friends life, going back to j coles born sinner when he talks about being young in the beginning of his career with sideline story and selling out for money chains and all that, on his song forbidden fruit. Kind of the beginning of a chain of reactions for what's to come. His friend is the literal perspective from actually being on the black selling drugs and getting into bad shit from again, being young and cocky and feeling immortal for real. I feel like 'deja vu' is a transition for both of them feeling a chick while in that mode. From a kind of a beginning crush perspective. Not so deep bc it's the beginning of a relationship so it's more like, "oh this girl is fine af let's fuck and see where it goes". Only bc in the second verse he talks about what he sees from afar. Then the transition into 'Ville mentality' is more like a realization of a position they both took when they wanted to act wild in the time period of the 'immortal' stage. That's the rain he is talking about in 'for whom the bell tolls' saying "how long can I live with this mentality". And the second verse with all the nevers is his ignorance and not being able to break that mentality. Sort of like "okay things are going hella wrong right now, maybe this ain't the right mentality to be living by... but I can't let them break me so imma stay this way either way". Going into 'she's mine part 1', it ties back into that girl he's talking about in 'deja vu'. At this point, he goes from being cocky in 'immortal', to wanting to pull this chick cuz he feel like he can in 'deja vu', to realizing his own problems in 'Ville mentality'. And the song 'she's mine part 1' is him realizing that this girl really loves me for who he is even tho they've done the shit they did in the past. He's developed a connection with someone he wants to change for which is a perfect transition into change. 'Change' is him making a change to make things work for his new situation with his new girl, talking about how "okay this girl really is feeling me, so maybe I can change this mentality of being a real street thug to being a family man for this girl". But also realizing that she ain't gonna change him, but it's him that has to change himself. Sort of an outlook on what's really going on once he's older on what that 'immortal' lifestyle can really do to someone. 'Neighbors' is sort of a fast forward and goes into the change he's made to his life to get from that specific mentality of being on the streets. So he moves to a neighborhood that doesn't live off that lifestyle, yet neighbors still look at him as nothing more than a street thug. The "don't follow me" line is him talking to his last lifestyle like "cmon I made this change to be better, why Am I still at risk of the consequences I was back when I was really doing this". So I think the I am is him just giving in like "fuck it, if it's like this here I might as well go back... so much for integration". That's on the outside. Then he lets us behind doors with 'folding clothes' to really show that there is a change. The transition to this song throughout each track shows how he goes from living that street life to really changing to a family man. 'Folding clothes' is a metaphor saying 'I wanna do all these little things I thought I would never do for anybody, to show you that I really care and have changed'. No matter how small it may seem bc we all know how important the little things are to women. He's saying "let me make life easier for you, since you helped me get out of that old mentality and brought me to where I am today, to make life easier for me'. He reflects on that old 'Ville mentality' with the last verse to show how different he is at this period of time. 'She's mine part 2' connects back to part 1 obviously, but in a way to show a lot deeper than you guys mentioned. Part 1 shows him saying "I had to make a change personally to make my love work for my lady", while part 2 shows him saying "this love is strong enough to envoke a change in me that's done impulsively". Part one is him thinking he's in love with his girlfriend, but part two is him experiencing real love between him and his daughter. Kind of showing the difference between a feeling and an actual experience. And of course, "4 your eyes only" is his homie speaking specifically to his daughter explaining his stages of change throughout his life, that is reflected on each track. Explaining how he did the dirt in immortal, how he fell in love with his mother and did what he had to do to make it work, "I put those jays on her feet", to realizing that he couldn't break that mentality and was stuck no matter where he was. Sort of like he was destined. And j coles take from it is being able to apply what he's learned from his homies experience as well as his own to make sure his daughters okay, while at the same time letting his homies daughter know, "your dad did it all for you, even tho it might not seem like it. But once you were here, he did what he could. But that 'rain' was coming down to hard. So basically in a nutshell, this album goes into a lot more deeper thought than you guys might've realized. But each track is placed for specific reason with very important detail to a lifestyle of a father figure that's been thru some shit.
