I've got two things for youu this time! First, the three little "coffins" you saw were not childrens coffins. They were "bone boxes" for the original inhabitants of that vault. To save space they were removed from their old coffins (these were disposed of) to be put into those little recepticles. And second: the crematory was already going full swing. Thanks to modern filters and regulations they don't spit out anything but hot air.

@AnnaMaria-zm8cv28 күн бұрын
Those tiny caskets are not for kids, they are bone boxes. My grandparents are also in these, they are burried in a 3 casket family vault, they put their bones when decomposition was completed in a smaller casket and dispose of the rest (casket, clothes etc) so a new body could be buried. There are now 4 in this vault, my grandparents, my dad and my uncle, but the last two are still decomposing and nothing can be done for another 20 years to them. The remaining place is for my mom. And then the cycle repeats.

In America we have lots of land for cemeteries and don’t have vaults to house generations but do have our families buried in family plots. In the earlier settled areas you might have family members who were originally born in Europe. No matter what country you come from, family is important especially when it comes to burying.

It's really more a faith and culturally based thing. Not to mention geological. Being part of the protestant side of Christianity, too much show is considered vulgar, not too mention the showing of busts/portraits being perilously close to popery and therefore idolatrous. The Catholic side tend to go in for a more flamboyant show in pretty much everything faith based. Interestingly though, as far as I understand, certainly in Britain, the less flamboyant the cemeteries the greater the tradition for walking around them as parks. In the Catholic part of the world it's almost unheard of

1:40 I don't think those are children's coffins. They are probably the bones of the people buried in that subterranean vault. In that kind of vault corpses are deposited in lead lined coffins with a chemical that helps consumation (these days it's another kind of metal less polluent). Later, here in Portugal it might be as long as 50 years, the coffin is reopened and the bones collected in those smaller ones. This might also happen if the corpse is buried in a perpetual grave. But coffins that go underground are not lined, they are just plain wood usually pine because it degrades faster. Usually, it's done after 5, or more years, after burial. Coffins that go to vaults, under or above ground, are usually made of mahogany that doesn't rot, or at least not so fast.

@ when you walk through cemeteries you will notice the most beautiful and imposing mausoleums were erected for people that died during the Victorian era from the 1840s all the way up to the start of WWI. Even working class people spent a lot of money on them compared to today where the more popular choice are modest headstones.
@Ronald-ks2iy23 күн бұрын
@ so we can see ancient mausoleums on our cemetery walks? I think you are missing my point. These works of art we see in our cemeteries today were built particularly in the nineteenth are early twentieth centuries, my belief is churchyards were primarily used as burial grounds prior and there simply wasn’t the room for them but as cities began allotting large pieces of land specifically for burials regular folks began building monuments for their deceased loved ones. Of course ancient peoples honored their dead with grave markers but it was the folks during the Victorian era, christians in particular that sought to erect these beautiful structors with statues made of marble & copper. I grew up in England and my primary school was right next to a cemetery and sometimes my friends and I liked to calculate how old people were when they died. I have always liked cemetery walks, they were never creepy places to me but open air museums as you said.

These resting places were not built by any regular Joe Blow either . Not that they shouldn't honor their dead , but geez , that's alot of cash , the dead don't see where they are buried , they're dead . Well , i'm glad they did though , because now we can walk through these cemetaries that look like cities , all you need is a few Cafes' and a petrol station ..
