World's Most Dangerous Roads: Deadliest Journeys in Afghanistan in 2016
Deadliest Roads - Myanmar: • Deadliest Roads | Myan...
Situated in the extreme northwest of Afghanistan, the Wakhan corridor is bordered by the Hindou Kouch mountains and peaks at almost 5000 meters high.
This forgotten region of Afghanistan is the only one to have been spared by the war that has raged through the country for years. No soldier, neither American nor from the Taliban, has ever entered it. Its inhabitants live as if in the middle ages, without water or electricity, and make a living by bartering. The only road that cuts through the corridor is almost inaccessible, crossing the mountainside, often buried by meters of snow. A handful of adventurers, traveling in rickety lorries, have dared to brave the isolated corridor, battling against the extreme elements. And, of course, the odd sheep and yak…

“I’ll give you a goat and a sheep. You give me 10 kg flour.” Marco Polo took the Wakhan corridor in the 13th century. Except for the two truck drivers who make regular trips in and out of this corridor, I don’t think much has changed since the 13th century and bartering is still the way to shop. The Wakhan Passage/Corridor is a passage to a place where time has stood still. I think you can only understand what that means riding on the back of a yak or donkey surrounded by 5000 meter high mountains. No taliban, no US soldiers, no Russian soldiers ever made it here. Thank god. The women are free to speak their minds, young girls can learn. There’s no electricity but it’s more modern than many other places in the world. “Even though it’s cold, I am still happy because I’m with my parents” A young girl on the back of a yak, wrapped in a crimson scarf, blindingly colorful against the stark white snow covering the mountains, clinging to her mother as they make their way to Sarhadd, at the end of the the Wakhan passage. “If they owe me something, they will always pay me back. Even if it’s in ten years. These are good honorable people.” The most dangerous roads The most beautiful places Enjoy! Have a lovely Sunday. Have a coffee ☕️ (or whatever you prefer) turn off the faucet 🐳 when you wash your hands. It saves water 💦 and you'll remember the people who have to get water from a well. Heck, some don’t even have a well. Remember that. Be gentle with what you’ve got.

This documentary hit me hard! I was born and raised in Afghanistan and have already experienced some of the problems seen in the documentary. It melted my heart to see the happiness on the face of the kid who received a pair of rubber boots. However difficult life might seem in Afghanistan, hope and happiness keeps us going...the documentary made me realize that my worries are so trivial and unnecessary. Live a simple but happy life is what the documentary taught me :)

For people wondering about the guy’s comment about Mars. That translation is not very accurate. We have a saying in Farsi that goes like: دیگران به کره مریخ رسید، ماره ببین! Meaning, others reach Mars and look at us. I remember this saying from like when I was a child. It doesn’t mean that this guy is necessarily aware of the latest NASA rocket or Elon Musk. He just cited the saying thats it.
