In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov shares with you an evil chess opening trap that you can use against beginners and even against 2800-rated Grandmasters like Magnus Carlsen.
It's a tricky trap from the Morphy Defense, Tarrasch Variation of the Ruy Lopez chess opening where White sacrifices the central e4-pawn for a quick attack. This trap is so advanced and complicated that even a grandmaster could easily fall right into it!
Best of all, this is a solid opening variation; even if your opponent doesn't fall for the trap, you still have a very good position.

Really interesting line, Igor! Quiz: Ne8+ or Nh5+ If the Rook blocks, ignore it and Bg7# If the Queen blocks, take her, the Rook must retake, and Bg7# again

3:21 for all of those who wondering why black can't play Bc5, it's because Qxe5+. If black blocks with Be7, then Nf5 is a checkmate.

Hi @EvanVry, do you mean Nf6 for the checkmate instead of Nf5? Because I can't see Nf5 as a valid move for the knight

Nxh5+, (Queen or rock blocks check) Bg7+, If the rook block that is checkmate if the Queen blocked then the queen takes the Bishop and final move is Qxe7+ mate.

Nh5 - qf6, qxf6 - rxf6 , bg7# for style points. (Pretty sure ne8 does the same too here, i just havent calculated that move as ne5 is forced mate too)

The puzzle was easy. What struck me right off the bat was that moving the knight gave a discovered check, and the king had nowhere to go, so his only choice would be to interpose the rook or the queen. The initial move can be either Ne8 or Nh5. Then, if black responds with Rf6, Bg7 is mate. If black instead plays Qf6, he gets to live for one more move. White still plays Bg7+, but black this time can play Qxg7. White then plays Qxg7 for the win. BTW, this is an excellent lesson all the way around. As you say, the moves are mostly the most popular, and everything seems rather natural as far as white's moves go -- nothing to indicate a trap is coming. In addition, the free pawns and fork of the rook and queen are quite tempting for black. And if he sees one trap and tries to avoid it, he may fall into another. The Stockfish score begins to really drop with 8... Nxd4, when it looks quite safe. Given the target for black is f2, I was surprised after d4 that capturing with the bishop was the least common of the three by far -- particularly surprising because it is the move recommended by Stockfish. After 9... Bxd4 10.Nxd4 Nxd4 11.Qg4, black is not too bad off if he continues with 11... O-O 12.Bh6 Ne6, protecting the g pawn, but it seems like a lot of players will overlook Ne6. One issue I do have with the lesson: after 9... Bxd4 10.Nxd4 Nxd4 11.Qg4, Igor states that "the most-played move by black was Nxb3." He fails to mention that there are only five games in the Lichess database in that position, three of which continued with that move. That's not a strong predictor of what black is likely to play.

Four solutions: 1.Nh5+ (or Ne8+) Qf6 (if 1. ... Rf6 2.Bg7#) 2.Qxf6+ (or 2.Bg7+ Qxg7 3.Qxg7#) Rxf6 3.Bg7#.

10:13 isn’t ng5 bad? I remember years ago in a club game after ng5 black played d5 instantly and somehow white gets into trouble. So black intentionally played d6 hoping for ng5. Black won that game quite easily.

6...Bb4 is a mistake and the typical response is 7. Nd5, with something like an 80% win rate. What you do need to know but was not covered in the video though is the typical Spanish move 6...Be7. Another try for black that was not mentioned is 7...Rb8 sidestepping the pin. In that case white should take on b5, with d3, 0-0 and Nd5 all decent options for white's 9th move. Magnus' response to this line is 5...Be7, not fearing an exchange on c6. This has a good reputation with a sample line being 6. 0-0 b5; 7. Bb3 0-0; 8. d3 d6; 9. a3, with an interesting struggle ahead. If you play this line, you should study this position and understand its differences from the more typical Spanish set-up with the knight on d2.

@@bartholomewlyons 7...Nxe4 is a move that has not been played in the database but 8. Qe2 looks to me to be crushing as the c6 knight is overloaded defending both e5 and b4. I suspect Stockfish could find more or less a forced win for white here and there might be something even stronger than Qe2 (8. Nxb4 Nxb4; 9. Bxf7+ Kxf7; 10. Nxe5+ and 11. Qf3 looks interesting, inter alia, but I won't recommend something like that without checking with a bot.)
