Bobby "Wheezer" Hutchins was an adored child film star in the 1930s when he appeared in the "Our Gang" comedy series. He left Hollywood forever in 1933 and faded into obscurity. While training to become a military pilot he was killed in a March 17, 1945 crash in Central California. Using the accident report, Jeff learns why the crash took place and takes you to the location.

Wheezer was one of my favorite characters in The Little Rascals. How heartbraking that he died so young and in such tragic circumstances! Imagine, attending your child's funeral when you were planning to go to his graduation. That poor Mom.😪

My mother went to Lincoln High in Tacoma with Bobby Hutchins. She says she didn't know him very well, as she was a couple years older than he was. Mom's younger brother was in Bobby's class though. Mom still talks about those days. I'm glad to learn more about Bobby Hutchins' life.

Wow, my uncle Steve "Sonny" Pilcher USN died the same way piloting a military Hellcat over Wilmington MA on May 23 1946. He was 22 years old when he died in that fiery crash. My family roots are from the area and plane crashed in my great aunt's backyard. No one on the ground was killed. The official report cited mechanical failure. My uncle was performing military maneuvers with another pilot out of Squantum Air Base that was in Swampscott MA. It was not uncommon for young military pilots to do air training over their hometowns so friends and family could watch. God Bless all who sacrifice!

My dad told me several horror stories he experienced while training with 2 engine Oxfords for the RCAF. He survived training, only to begin training as an instructor, instead of piloting Lancasters for the Allies. WWII ended and he was able to become an engineering student at U of Toronto, graduate and work for Dupont in the US-John in Texas

Once again you made me feel like I was there. My love for history began with WW 2 aviation in 1964, thanks to the TV series 12 O'clock High. It has since grown in great depth to include all American History. The opportunity to visit crash sites of famous people would be a very sobering experience for me. I often tried to imagine what it would be like to visit the site where Carole Lombard's life ended on her war bond tour in 1942. This is our history and it is up to each of us to make sure it is appreaciated and never forgotten. Once again, thank you Jeff.

In his early Our Gang pictures, Wheezer was often teamed with the equally very young Donnie "Beezer" Smith. According to the Imdb website, Beezer is still alive at age 98. Another kid actor who appeared in a few Our Gang films at the same time Wheezer was in the Gang was George Ernest. He was kind of a short term replacement for Jackie Cooper when Cooper left the series. Ernest had a very interesting military career, in World War 2, being part of a team that secretly parachuted into Normandy BEFORE the D-Day invasion to take reconnaissance photos of transportation and military installations for maps for the invading troops. A very brave guy. So the Gang did their bit for the country. Also, Jackie Cooper himself had a distinguished record in the Navy both during the war and after, and, like Wheezer, Donald Haines was killed in action.

Thank-you for all the great work you put into this production. Like others, I enjoyed the Little Rascals and particular, "Wheezer". That devilish grin he gave the girls was exactly how I felt when I was around girls when I was a little boy. It always made my teachers nervous, but it was innocent. I knew that I really liked girls, but didn't know why until later! Rest in peace Bobby Hutchins. Thank-you for your service.

There was no "mystery" whatsoever why Wheezer was cut from Our Gang - he simply aged out, like every other kid on the show did. It was reported in the entertainment magazines of the time that Bobby Hutchins would be used sporadically towards the end of his run as he had grown noticeably taller. So, he was fazed out with a few last sporadic apperances where he was kind of shunted off to the side. Same exact scenario with kids like Jackie Condon (reduced to a bit player towards the end), Matthew "Stymie" Beard (only 2 lines of dialog in his last 2 films) and Eugene "Porky" Lee (let go because he grew taller than Spanky but was supposed to be younger.)

I got to know a lot of people who worked for Hal Roach and many of the former Our Gang kids. They all told me Wheezer was never allowed to mix in with the other kids and was not treated well by his dad so pretty much what you said. One actor told me about his dad grabbing him by the arm and dragging him to the set. After he left he never stayed in touch with anyone but I do believe one actress(Mary Ann Jackson) said she did visit him after he moved back to Washington.

The amount of time consuming research you put into your work it absolutely astounding! I must admit, having grown up in Germany, I never heard of this actor. I’ve been living in the Central Valley for decades, and never heard of this plane crash. I actually found your channel because I’m watching several pilots‘ KZbin Channels. This Channel came up in my feed suggestions. I then watched your video on the San Diego crash. I find plane crashes (or any disaster, really) fascinating, the way they investigate and find the cause. I’m not Air Force connected nor have I ever piloted a plane. Imagine my surprise though when I found all the local history you’re investigating! Thank you very much for keeping history alive!

An excellent presentation on this forgotten actor and serviceman. I cannot fathom what his mom was going through when she buried him. If I may, I recommend checking out the remnants of Gardner Airfield just outside Taft, CA. This location was where Chuck Yeager received his initial pilot training, and also Tonopah Airfield in NV. A small number of the original wooden WWII hangars are still standing.

Welcome to our channel. I am glad that you enjoy your videos and I appreciate your comments about the photography and the research that goes into these. We do like to keep things interesting and at times will goof off but for the most part I don’t like KZbin channels that go overboard on silly humor.

Wheezer often played Jackie Cooper's irritating kid brother in The Series. Of special interest to me, was the plot line where Jackie had a CRUSH (Susan Ford, where are you when we need you?) on his lovely schoolteacher, Miss Crabtree (June Marlowe). Oh my word, but WHAT a beauty June Marlowe was; I was born 90 years too late! Wheezer kept razzing big brother so bad about it, that it often came to blows.

Thank you so much for making this video. I read only a little bit about this accident. Weezer was one of my favorite Our Gang actors along with Stymie & baby Spanky. Dogs is Dogs is one of my favorites with Weezer playing the main actor. A very sad ending to his life.

I often thought about him and wonder what he may look like as a adult and if he was old before he ever past away, well now I know he never made it into his adult years after 20 something years of his life. Rest In Peace, you will never be forgotten, you will always be little rascals.

Being only 29 years old the little rascals/our gang comedies were way before my time but I still enjoy them. The first episode I ever saw had Bobby Hutchins in it. I knew that his was in the service and died in a training exercise but never knew where at or were he was laid to rest at.

Coincidentally, I just watched the History Hunters Theodore Roosevelt Yosemite episode (if you haven't seen it you should watch it!). After that great episode finished, then I clicked on this episode about the Little Rascals star that died young in the plane crash. This Turlock plane crash took place May 17, 1945, exactly 42 years to the day after the meeting between John Muir and Teddy Roosevelt in nearby Yosemite park (Turlock, California is relatively close to Yosemite National Park). I also found it coincidental that in the beginning of the Roosevelt Yosemite History Hunters episode, that you have a pop-up mentioning that Teddy Roosevelt died "42 years before Jeff was born". Odd too, that Teddy Roosevelt only lived to be 60 years old when he died in January of 1919.

Fine, frank, and fascinating. Was the last photo of two servicemen actually include Wheezer? The one on the right seems to look like him. Also, the funeral photos are original? Sometimes they re-enact things.

Thanks Jeff, for another fascinating story from CA. Wheezer was an amazing child actor. "Pups is Pups" is a classic Our Gang comedy. Did you happen to find any photos of him from his army air corp days? Finally, since you collect autographs do you have any of the Our Gang crew? Spanky Mcfarland seemed to be the most available.......Like the signature series as well. Keep up the good reporting....

There is an interview out there with Stimie (Stymie?) and another with Mary and they back up the stories of Wheezers dad being a tool. Might even be in YT. I got to meet Hal Roach at a Sons of the Desert convention. He was flirting at 100 and in good shape and sharp. Passed away shortly after. Many of the still living Lil Rascals characters and several supporting actors from Laurel and Hardy's films were there too. Music was live on a upright Steinway played by T. Marvin Hatley himself. We had no idea all this would be there.
