Jeff and Sarah travel to the sad remains of Milton, a Calaveras County, California town dating back to the 1860s. They'll check out the historic cemetery, explain how the town came up and quickly withered. Jeff bumps into an old-timer who explains the whereabouts of the old train depot once visited by Black Bart.

Enjoyed watching. We own what was originally the Milton store. The area has a lot of history. I was told the 1st stage black bart robbed (and the last) was the Milton stage. I like to imagine that he stopped by the store....

Me and my friend parked at the Milton Cemetery to do a 20 mile e-bike ride around Salt Springs Reservoir. When we got back we explored the cemetery. When I got home I searched the Milton Cemetery on the internet and I came across this video of yours. I’m am fascinated by history and have been following your You Tube channel ever since. I’m glad you throw in a lot of the railroad history. My grandpa on mom’s side was a railroad engineer for Southern Pacific from about 1920-1960. He worked up and down California I believe and through the Bay Area. Even thru my hometown of Fremont. Said it was all orchards back then, our house was built in an old walnut orchard in 1957, moved there in 1977. If you know where Irvington Memorial Cemetery is, that’s a block from where I grew up in Irvington, CA

I remember when the school house still stood and the bell was still in its little bell tower. Just a note, when the Masonic Lodge burnt, all kind of historical photos and papers were lost. I picked up some square nails from the rubble. An arsonist burned it, I believe. Enjoy your videos, they are pretty accurate with the history.

Recently subscribed, after watching your Back to The Future pt.3 location vlog in nearby Tuolumne Co.. Have lived near Murphys, for close to 40 years. Leaving the railroad @ Milton, those on the way to the Big Trees often stayed @ the Historic Murphys Hotel, where I worked for a few years... Known originally as the Sperry & Perry Hotel..... Charles Boles, Bowles.... Checked in there as Charles Bolton, and has a door named after him.... Yep , "Black Bart". Looking forward to new episodes here in Calaveras County

A Masonic brother of mine introduced your channel to me, and I love it: great work. To answer one of your questions that I did not see answered by someone else, Keystone Masonic Lodge no.161 (while it may have been used as an Independent Order of Odd Fellows Hall, it was a registered Masonic lodge with the Grand Lodge of California) burned to the ground on January 23, 2016, likely due to arson. In the Modesto Masons Facebook page photos, there are a few pictures of what the lodge looked like inside. I was fortunate to attend two Masonic meetings there before it returned to the dust. I hope this helps.

In the meantime I will try to figure out when she came to Calif. from South Carolina . We are full of questions like did she marry A. St. Clair before Calif. or after she arrived in CA. I must someday go to the Milton cemetery to visit her grave. Thanks again

Jeff, I visit this cemetery in the small town of El Dorado near Placerville often, love it. It’s very historical home of many pioneers. Many of the stones date back to gold rush days. It’s not the Placerville cemetery, but it’s actually called El Dorado Cemetery. It’s right next to an active church too. I’m usually the only one there, God, I need to go back, it’s been over a year now. 20 mins away from me..

@@jbenziggy Little House site is still there but all of the structures are gone. Two episodes of Little House (Pilot - 1974) and another about 10 years later in the ranch house, which has since burned down. I was actually in the pilot which was also filmed at Old Oak Ranch near Sonora and in Stockton. Big Country (Gregory Peck etal.), Sam Whiskey (Burt Reynolds), SHOUT! (John Travolta) and Coast to Coast (Robert Blake & Dyan Cannon). Plus lots of commercials. As for plane crash after Thanksgiving, that was on the Horseshoe Ranch. A fighter jet did crash on the Snow Ranch in the 60's. The main draws are the petroglyphs in the cave and the grinding rocks along Hood Creek.

That was not an Oddfellows Hall in Milton. It was a Masonic Lodge (Milton Masonic Keystone Lodge No. 161). The building was built in 1871 in Copperopolis as a saloon and was used later as a town hall. It was purchased by the Masonic Lodge in 1881 and moved from Copperopolis to Milton.That is why the cemetery is called the Milton Masonic Cemetery. You will find Masonic cemeteries in many of the Sierra Nevada mining towns. I love watching your videos. I lived in Stanislaus County for a good portion of my life, drove through Hickman on my way to work in Livingston and drove through Milton many times when going from Oakdale to Nevada.

I really am glad that you (unknowingly) answered a question of mine! When I saw the headline, I went to Google Earth to find out where Milton was, since this California boy had never heard of the town (I wonder why?). When looking at the "God's Eye" view of G.E., I saw the unmistakable traces of a small terminal yard. When I went to Street View, I kept seeing this large, two story white building (back wall could've used some paint), but there was no trace of it on Earth. All three streets: building; overhead: weed choked lot! Kinda figured possibly a fire, thanks for confirming.

Like the videos man. All the places I used to go. The memories come flooding back. Some good some not so good. But hell, I was young then and we were a pretty rough crowd. Work hard play hard. Friday and Saturday nights running between the Black Bart Inn and Goonies Saloon or staying in Mt. Ranch at the Blunder Inn. I sometimes wonder how I'm still alive. Wonder if Jim and Linda Felky still run the Blunder. Ever going to Moke Hill?

I just found your channel, the modesto video. Milton is cool, Ive done a bit of metal detecting on a few of the ranches up there. You mentioned little house on the prairie....they were rumored to have shot a few scenes in the schoolhouse thats near salt spring reservoir, right near where you just were. If you follow milton road toward jenny lind you can see the evidence of the doodlebug dredging along the road. lots of cool stuff up there.

You might be interested to know that David and Mary Board are interred in the Milton Cemetery as well as several of their children. They had lived in this area since about 1854. Board's Crossing, a campground along the Stanislaus RIver is named for them. The crossing is where the Board's took their cattle across the river to feed in the summer season. There is an old cabin there that two of the Board's sons built. You can walk down to the river and you will find a monument erected in the memory of Mary and David Board. You mentioned The Little House on the Prairie. The school house used in the TV series still stands at Salt Springs Valley. Mary Board was on the school board for this school. We have enjoyed your videos. They have been very interesting.

@judyboard7062
@judyboard7062 4 жыл бұрын
Board's Crossing is located near Dorington, CA. Take highway 4 east to Dorington. At Dorington you will see signs for Board's Crossing. You will turn south and drive down to Board's Crossing Bridge on the Stanislaus River. The monument is down a dirt road and then it requires a short hike to actually see the monument. Salt Springs Valley is in Calaveras County. The Board family lived and ranched here near Bear Mountain. www.calaverashistory.org/salt-spring-valley Are you asking if the school house is on private property? The school house is probably on private property.

I hadn't known this part about the Donners. The Breens settled in San Juan Bautista (the Mission which is also the other living town and state park like Columbia), and lived in the Castro house, which is named Castro-Breen House. The Reids settled in San Jose, where several streets are named after the girls, and are buried in Oakhill Cemetery. Elitha Cumi Donner-Wilder is buried in Elk Grove -Consumnes cemetery. Several family went back east, and she refused to go. Preferring to stay in warm weather.
