It would make sense to build underground. Aside from a solid concrete building, nothing is going to withstand tornadoes. It might look odd, but at least people and their homes will be safe.

Most of us in Kansas have basements…. that’s not the issue. We are so use to Tornados it’s like the saying goes “When Kansans hear a tornado is near, we all run outside to see it”…. call it dumb or whatever you want, but it’s just the way we are built. This is normal to us. I’ve been in everhtbing from an EF1-EF4 (the last taking my house right off the concrete slab just a few years ago in 2019). My area gets hit a lot. My daughter almost got sucked up by an EF5. It was all over the news. My aunt was clinging onto her holding her hands as the tornado had her feet in the air as she hung on for dear life. Only reason she survived is bc suddenly there was a calm and it’s bc they were in the eye of the tornado. In that second they ran under the staircase and that’s what ultimately saved her life. After that, the tornado swept the entire home and street leaving only the concrete slab and the staircase. Tornado Alley folks are accustomed to these unpredictable creatures.

@@jogirl836eh, I wouldn't say most. I guess homes, maybe majority have basements. But obviously trailers don't (my current park's shelter is out of commission so I have to drive up to the sister parks to use their basements (sooo convenient and safe 😂/j) but the apartments I have had did not have shelters or basements for tornado shelter. I remember in Manhattan KS, I had to go to the Dillons across the street and take shelter in their cooler. I also feel like schools should have an actual basement.

KyotoProtocolBreaking that's called karma, freedom to pollute is also freedom to get more violent and frequent tornadoes... Direct consequence of the global warming...

I was born and raised in SE Kansas. And no, you never get used to it. But it becomes a part of life. I never get used to hearing tornado sirens go off in the middle of the night.

That don't makes any sense I don't know why you don't just start building houses and buildings underneath the ground so you won't have to repair every other year

Because us in Tornado Alley are use to this. We have basements and storm shelters but we don’t use them. As the saying goes “When Kansans hear a tornado is near, we all run outside to see it”. Just the way we are built. I’ve been in several tornados. The last EF4 took my whole house off the concrete slab in 2019. Wasn’t the first time either. Seems to be a spot Tornados frequent. But again we are use to it. It’s hard to explain unless you’re from here or should I say “Tornado Alley”.

25 years ago, they were saying an ice age was coming....look up Leonard Nemoy talking about a coming ice age. The recent scare tactic was global warming, but they had to modify that to climate change because there were record cold periods😅 Some of the craziest weather was 100+ years ago. The weather changes to extremes sometimes...that doesn't mean humans are always responsible for it.

Nah.... don't believe in global warming! tornadoes have been going on since the dawn of time.. pull up a yearly report on how many tornadoes each state has gotten since they began keeping track of it.. you'd be surprised and would stop blaming global warming

I have lived in tornado alley all my life. This is normal for us. When massive EF5's tear through big cities like Joplin, the government provides aid. Otherwise, it's up to the State. I don't see why the President would need to be involved at all.🤷‍♂️
