I lived in San Francisco during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The devastation was incredible but the collapse of the double-decker Nimitz freeway was sad. Some trapped people never got out. The fire in the Marina was massive and a section of the Bay Bridge freeway collapsed. My parents lived near the epicenter 90 minutes south and had property damage. The rescuers were brave people and worked tirelessly to save people. I still feel sad for the loss of life; this earthquake is something that stays with you.

Isn't this the same fault line that follows the Pacific Ocean north to Canada and Alaska to Japan which to those of us who have lived long enough to have felt an earthquake or many quakes, if you're 100 years old and recall a few of them yourself, you could write about your story. Keeping a journal would be passed on to the next generation to be warned and should encourage to publish a book of your memories.

I remenber this quake very well. I was in Dallas Texas and i was to fly into Long Beach California that evening but i got drunk and missed my plane. 😂. When i came to the agent at the ticket counter told me "You missed the earthquake." I was clueless. They had booked me on alater flight to Long Beach but for some reason I had to fly into LAX then make my way from there back to Terminal Island where i was stationed at the JAG office. It was quite an ordeal. Edit These firemen and doctors are phenomenal guys. With the threat to their own lives so close, they still stayed to rescue these people. They all deserve medals.

My boyfriend and I were watching the pregame show before the World Series that evening when the earthquake occurred. Al Michaels said, "You know what, I think we're having an earth--" and everything cut out. Because the series was on ABC, the first coverage from that channel on the quake came from ESPN (owned by ABC), who had a remote truck on site with its own power. I think it was Bob Ley (can't swear to that) who undertook the herculean task of talking about the conditions in the area of the stadium. He really rose to the challenge. We stayed with him until ABC got their own people back on the air. So this program took a liberty when talking about people watching the game. The earthquake happened about 30 minutes before the scheduled start time, and was postponed before it ever began.

I had a friend who ran an audio cassette mail order company from a PO Box in SF in 1989. This was long before email and online ordering. He said that their was no mail service for several days, so he said, 'I'm out of business.' A day or so later they did receive all of their missing mail on one delivery day. The post office building he was using was badly damaged. He set up a new box in Petaluma but soon went totally out of business.

@cutebutsadisticable3 жыл бұрын
That's CA for you.
@nekomasteryoutube32323 жыл бұрын
Lots of places that are prone to earthquakes have gas, its used for heating and cooking in many places and is needed for commerical and industrial purposes as well. I mean hell, as far as I know Japan and China have natural gas stuff, theres also NG in Mexico and I wouldn't be surprised around the Mediterreanian where earthquakes are a problem there too. **ALSO** Natural gas lines are also a cause of fires in severe flooding, hurricanes and tornados if the winds and/or flood waters damage the structures and sever gas lines (which Natural gas can be lit by any flames or electrical sparks)

Amazing how they make the same mistakes that the 1906 quake should have taught them lessons, wood buildings 5 stories high packed right next to each other, really? water mains that snapped and became useless just like 1906, building a double decker concrete slab highway, REALLY?
@nekomasteryoutube32323 жыл бұрын
Those kind of highways can be built safely but the design and location of that section of highway made it vulnerable to collapse in a strong earthquake. The reason why now some highways are build with a large rectangular box under the sections they hold up is to give the roadway more space to move around and less likely to fall off.
