Deadly Sea-wiz Phalanx CIWS in Action . Ultimate Defence Against Enemy Aircraft | Compilation Video

The MK 15 Phalanx Close-In Weapons System (CIWS - pronounced "sea-whiz") is a fast-reaction, rapid-fire 20-millimeter gun system that provides US Navy ships with a terminal defense against anti-ship missiles that have penetrated other fleet defenses. Designed to engage anti-ship cruise missiles and fixed-wing aircraft at short range, Phalanx automatically engages functions usually performed by separate, independent systems such as search, detection, threat evaluation, acquisition, track, firing, target destruction, and ceasefire.
CIWS has been a mainstay self-defense system aboard nearly every class of ship since the late 70s. It was originally designed to defeat low-altitude anti-ship cruise missiles (ASCMs). As anti-ship cruise missiles became more complex in maneuvers and ability to be detected, and warfare areas moved from the open ocean to littoral environments, CIWS has evolved to meet the threat.
The Phalanx is a necessity for U.S. naval ships to enter disputed seas or seas with a U.S. adversary conducting “Anti-access/area denial” (A2/AD) operations within the territory. A2/AD is an increasing issue in areas such as the South China Sea and the Baltic territories. Without systems such as the Phalanx, U.S. naval vessels would be vulnerable to cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, or aerial attacks. Having the capability to shoot down incoming threats can give U.S. sailors confidence to maintain the balance of power on the sea.

@starryapril yes. They are. I know this because I was a CIWS tech for 6 years. The point I was making is that the video is about CIWS and CIWS is a 20mm gun that, normally, does not use tracers. And, NEVER uses 25mm rounds. I'm not sure why they added the 25mm cannon in that video.

My uncle was in charge of the sea whizz program here in Canada. When we had naval day somebody forgot to stand the weapon down and it trained on an American sea king helicopter and it opened up. Thank god it was unloaded at the time.

Same gun as fighter jets - M61A1. The way it aims at air targets is really neat. Its kind of a pain to load. It's LITERALLY a robot. I worked on block 0 and block 1 mounts in the 90s.

I remember watching a live-fire against a towed aerial target when I was on CVN-70. The R2D2 got one burst off, which severed the cable from the target, which then barely missed falling onto the flight-deck. Demo-fires at night were also a fun sight, all those tracers!

The mk 38 slow loader seemed more accurate at ground/base targets. Probably a better defence against shipping. The chain gun relies on volume off rounds to hit its target. Accuracy per round is actually very poor.

They aren't fully automated. Source my dad was a sea wiz operator which came in handy during a shooting drill when it shredded the target and then started tracking the wire up to the jet that had been pulling the target.

This is a 6 barrelled 20mm Gatling gun that fires 100 rounds a second and carries about 900-1000 rounds on the mount (I wonder how many reloads are carried?). It's the same gun as carried by many U.S jet fighters and yes it does fire 100 rounds a second but if you're an enemy pilot with quick enough reflexes you could possibly get out of the way because it takes a few seconds to build up to firing 100 rounds a second. The Dutch have something similar/better called Goalkeeper that packs the 7 barrelled 30mm cannon as carried by the A-10 Thunderbolt (the cannon that will knock out Tanks!) and I think I'd rather have one (or more!) of those if I was Captain of a warship in hostile waters. I can just imagine what Goalkeeper would do to any aircraft/drone/missile/boat!!!☠☠☠

That's not CIWS firing in that clip, that's the Mk 38 Autocannon. CIWS fires sabot enclosed Tungsten rounds. It used to use depleted Uranium rounds before they switched.

This would be a great defensive weapon mounted in any shoe store, jewelry store or pharmacy stupid enough to maintain a location in Oakland or San Francisco California, or Portland Oregon. Think of how much this weapon could save the US tax payer. The relief it would provide to the US Court system. Although the city morgue will need overhauled, expanded. What if this CIWS could be air dropped by parachute into riots? And it be given a full 360 degree field of fire. Rename it the CIJS., or Close In Justice System.
