I just watched this again tonight. I realized that Freddy didn't actually need to succeed in his plot with Jesse, but instead just get the party goers to see and fear him, so he can invade and kill them in their dreams later. I think Freddy realized this when he was able to invade Jesse's dreams due to his immense fear of coming out (or not). Schneider and Grady were just tests for Freddy to kill outside of dreams.

But freddy killed people out in the real world, he was in the real world. It just didn't make much sense. And they already tested that in the first movie sorta, because Freddy didn't realize it was still a dream first, so it might as well have been the real world. I get he combined himself with Jesse, but that doesn't help Freddy in the real world make sense at all.

Though you could argue his girlfriend also fits the bill, she wasn't the one we were watching through most of it. He had the perfect scream queen yell, was the focus of unnecessary over-sexualized scenes, and ended up as the damsel in distress in the climax. His actual sexual orientation has nothing to do with it, it's his actions and experiences in the movie that give him the right to be called the 'final girl' character. The fact that the 'final girl' is a boy is refreshing, though.

i watched that scream queen movie yesterday about the documentary of this movie. it made me very emotional. this movie deserves better. it was actually really good. 1980’s Hollywood was very homophobic. and seeing what mark had to go through with this movie broke my heart.
