I believe it is very important to see deaf people as whole, not as broken or impaired. I often see some people have a pity on them just because they are deaf even though they are living great lives! They are not necessarily poor people. They just need more accommodation.

I've been HoH since I was 3. I never got to see a community, didn't even know there was a school for it until I was in my 20s. I failed traditional hearing aids, eventually got a BAHA in 2016. I'm 47. I have a family, but I still know nothing about a community, and I am learning to sign through these videos. There's more of us than people think.

I am glad you put this put in the way you did. I am not deaf... but I am ... struggling... with other limitations. What I have learned is simply this: All people are people. All people have limits. All people can rise to the skies. Those who hurt, harm, shame... they never reach as high as the lowest gutter. Yet, like gutters... they hold the most vitriol. I am, sadly, remiss... lagging... But, I try. Strength to all of those who struggle... regardless of what "society" says we "lack". F that. Love all.

Seeing deaf people celebrate who they are and advocate to not be seen as impaired reminds me a lot of my own experiences as an autistic person and the autism community. Autism is part of who we are and there are many positive aspects of being autistic. Instead of simply awareness, we advocate for *acceptance* of autism in society. Also, in a similar way that deaf people don't want to be referred to as "hearing impaired," most of us prefer being called "autistic people" rather than "people with autism" because, again, there is no way to separate who we are from our autism.

So cool. I was not aware that there was a deaf week. Pretty cool to learn. I believe that it should be a curriculum in schools like math, science, reading and sign language. Just suggestion. Heck yea I’m in love it. Learning something new. Thank you for sharing this.

I have a question--- Why was DEAFPALS dismembered. It was the BEST deaf/hoh community EVER, I made a lot of great friends & it had a wonderful online chat data base I miss it so very much & cannot find ANYTHING like it out there now 😢

You and Olly working that joint video up was and is soooooo big!!! I'm not sure how much you realize, but I learned so much from the video on his channel that I haven't seen fully addressed anywhere else which is massively helpful in learning any sign language vs a spoken language. Getting to incorporate it with everything you shared here is just that much better! Thanks always, guys!!! Can I ask for your thoughts on whether to teach ASL directly or baby sign for little ones?

You are so welcome Rachel! Baby sign language is a great first step in introducing signs that leads directly in to learning more. Baby sign language is ASL just selected signs to benefit little ones. You can start there and grow the vocabulary as they grow.

Hi Marchesa, I don't sign and talk at the same because that is what is called sim-com. When one signs and talks, the ASL structure is dropped along with signs causing it to be a broken language. Instead we captioned the video. Hope this helps clarify.

I do know some professionals who are hearing, and they talk and sign at the same time its not broken language, makes no sense, I think maybe to you is broken language because you won't put any effort to communicate in sign language. I mean if you are promoting something about humans concerns its best to educate yourself and bring that energy and enthusiasm to what you are persuading others to believe.
