Dogs actually can smile, when my dogs play with each other they frequently curl up their lips like that and it’s clear that they’re happy. They definitely have a dog equivalent to smiling. I’ve taken many pictures of dogs where they looked like they were smiling, with their mouth slightly open and lips curled upwards. Most of the time, the dogs were actually very happy. I love dogs.

My dog knows how to whisper!!!! She does “silent howls” when she wants something, because she hasn’t figured out how to get our attention without otherwise barking, and she doesn’t want to bark in our faces. She will throw her head back and make an O with her mouth, but make no sound. We eventually taught her how to whisper. She does it for treats now. To all people theorizing the dog can't be deaf bc it's reacting to her voice: Deaf dogs learn to look for visual cues like facial expressions, hand signals etc. Since they have a larger field of vision than humans the dog propably saw their human's cue (lips moving for praise and a smile) on the side and turned to see it mor clearly. Maybe their were also hand signals involved. It is amazing how much dogs can compensate for disabilities. Especially deafness can be compensated with an understanding owner to a degree where as an outsider you wouldn't even recognise it most of the time. Dogs rely mainly on sight and smell anyways.

animals usually look for body language before spoken language. Even the not deaf ones. So for them, they aren‘t compensating as much as a human would. They use their hearing in other areas much more and there they really need to compensate. But when it comes to communication not so much.

My family got a kitten once who had barely been weaned before his rescue, and would constantly toddle after our older cat (with our supervision) for a few weeks. A day or two in, the elder approached his food bowl and began to eat; the kitten had never used a food bowl before and you could tell he didn't understand. He stared intently for a bit, then started to imitate his elder: Leaning forward slightly and smacking in mid-air to mime eating. I'll never forget the older cat's reaction: Stopped eating to stare, glanced at me with a clear "???" expression, then back to the little freak until he stopped.

It’s like my dads cats, he recently rescued a kitten. He had 3 but sadly the oldest died and like 5 days later he rescued baby Storm. She was called Libby but Nah, fuckin Libby. She was wilder then the feral cat my dad rescued. She attacked my dad and he fell, almost breaking his wrist. He’s fine now. But she saw how Jasper the oldest and the fattest played with Phoenix and she began to play with them. Jasper is bigger than my Bichon Frisée dog. His tail is thicker than my fingers, around the average width of a round nail polish bottle. She’d play with his tail like Phoenix would and run after him. She was mimicking Phoenix until Jasper one day had enough, whacked her with his paw and sent her flying down the bed. It took her a few minutes but she went back. She now eats both her food and the boys food. I named her Storm for a few reasons, one it was like a storm trying to recuse her in the cat shit, rotten apartment. Two, she came into my dads life like a thunderstorm, bouncing around and whacking off everything. Three, with the cats initials in age order it’s JPS. Plus I couldn’t imagine my dad, a proper Geordie bloke, built like a sad, old industrial fridge to shout “Libby man fucking packet in”. I named Phoenix and honestly, I can’t see what other names they’d have. But now Storm has also began to mimic Jasper, in how he asks for strokes of me. He’s pretty big and me and me dad watch horror films together. He sits and waits for me to stroke him, watching me. So while watching the conjuring I had two pairs of eyes on me watching my every move. It’s not scary until you see her sitting on your window still watching you at 5am.
