At last! Thank you so much for this. Since Deafheaven came under spot lights, there's been debates whether it's one way or another considered "black metal" or not because they're not as trve and kvlt as gatekeepers consider enough. Due to genre's atmospheric characteristics, although there are dozens of unique and pretty good black metal drummers out there, you don't get to see them featured on main stream metal music contents. Though Nils 'Dominator' Fjellström, Frost, Denis Bouche, and Maciej 'Darkside' Kowalski got to receive some praise, it's rare. As of years of listening to the genre, I can unreservedly say that Daniel Tracy has a special place among all. Great stamina, tasteful polyrhythms with ride, on poinst accents... Even though Deafheaven's music blends all elements into each other, it's really easy to hear Daniel Tracy's magic. I am familiar with other projects he involved and he's really versatile, he can always find room to shine out, he occasionally does that with Deafheaven. Ordinary Corrupt Human Love has plenty of specific "Daniel moments" but I love how he doesn't over do that and always catch up with the unison. Trevor Deschryver was on the drums on their first LP Roads to Judah and he played for black metal bands such as Wolves in the Throne Room, Minenwerfer, Wreche, and Dispirit, but Daniel came after him and make the pieces fit for Deafheaven.

One of the cool things about his technique is how he uses his left foot to keep time, even when it's not actually on the hi-hat or double kick.

Oh. My. God. Daniel Tracy is a BEAST. Ferocious rhythm with these seemingly impossible melodic musical fills and accents which I find especially unique in the metal world. He totally drives and elevates Deafheaven's otherwordly music. This drum cam footage really showcases his magical stickwork and next level footwork. Just . . . DAMN Daniel!
