@@bradfrye8297 I love all three of my Polarizes. I have owned Polaris quads since 1990. I have NEVER EVER had to walk out because my machine died. I usually ride 5,000 miles a year between my dirt bike and quad. When I was much younger, I rode my duel sport bikes 10,000 to 15,000 miles a year. I also had excellent luck with my Yamahas. Please tell all of us what brand of machine that you ride. I would like to know. If you are proud of it, tell us. By the way, I mean that I have 3 Polaris 4 wheelers right now. A 2022 570 Trail, a 2009 Sportsman 500, and a 2018 RZR 900. I have owned 2 1990 350s, 2 1995 sportsman 500s, 2 1999 Sportsman 500s, 2 2002 Sportsman 500s and a 2009 that I still have, and a 2012 that I traded in for my 2022 machine. The only thing that ever happened out on the trails is, I lost a belt on my 2012 machine. I was 30 miles from the truck, BUT, I always carry a spare belt and enough tools to change it. Took me 30 minutes on the side of a mountain at 8,000 feet in elevation. Spectacular view while changing the belt. I DO trust my Polaris machines, and I always ride alone.

I was unable to work on my wife’s quad last year. Long story short, took it to the “most reputable “ dealership in my area, they told me it had zero compression and $3600 to rebuild. I obviously passed and when I was able to work on it again, the compression was on the higher end of the specs. All I wanted was it tuned up and gone through. So glad I have the knowledge to not get completely ripped off.

If you’re testing for low compression, why would you leave that filthy air filter in? You need air to create compression. As a small engine mechanic, I’ve had several mowers come in with plugged air filters, and after I removed the filter they started and ran fine. You need four major items for an engine to run - air, fuel, spark, timing - and number 5 compression. The big glob in the carb bowl could explain why it ran and then wouldn’t. Gunk will float around and then cover ports intermittently. Nice catch on the timing!! Great the way you reasoned it through and watched for symptoms that didn’t “seem” to be related. Good job. I think this is a great example of why knowing and remembering to check those five factors I mentioned before is important.

My Can-Am dealer could not figure out how to put a belt on my Defender. When I contacted BRP, they sent me a voucher for $1500 in accessories. Joe, I know I wrote this before but you never answered. I do the same as you. I buy old Bikes and get them running. I restore them after getting them running good. About 2-3 Bikes a year for the past 40 years. Now my process is simple. A good wash and clean of all parts while assembled. Then a diagnosis and general check out. Then I strip it down completely. The most important thing is the initial wash and clean. It means clean parts to work with. This is key to me because it is much easier to see everything. Cracks, breaks and more. No dirt gets into the inside too. My hands are cleaner. Why do you not do this easy and simple job! I ask myself every time I watch your vids. Dont get me wrong I like your work.

Just a word on the mechanic from a business standpoint. So, the shop puts in 5 hours, going through what you did only to find that their diag. was correct. You say "too much, don't fix it". The shop says you owe us $700.00 labor at $140 per hour.. Oh, and don't forget the shop fees, the rags used ect. for another $50. You're not a happy camper.

Check spark, fuel, compression in that order. First pull spark plugs out and ground on engine, see if they spark. Then pull air filter off, make sure there are no obstructions and spray starting fluid (don't waste time to see if fuel system is working). If still not running then check compression. If compression is good then your ignition timing is probably off.

very nicely done i do love a good diagnostics video good skills if i were to guy who sold it for 460 dollars, i would be properly pissed off about that, though that is not your fault of course, you did him a favor and took the risk if i may, the best bit of this video is watching your devoted hound run after you i almost never do this but... subscribed after one video

Great Buy, see Can-Am, but never bought one. Great Job putting the puzzle back together. Special guest star 2Vinny 🤣Like me, so happy it is running - even roughly - you kiss the garage floor knowing a few more twists and running like a watch

Outstanding, pays to know your machine inside and out, or easy to get screwed by dishonorable or terrible mechanics.

Joe, maybe approach the old owner to see if you could come to a reasonable amount for your time if he would buy it back? But you might make more by listing and flipping it?

Joe takes large risks each purchase. When he ends up losing thousands on a buy, does the seller feel bad and pay Joe for losing thousands?

My father had one 400 outlander easy very reliable. Only oain to replace a timing chain you literally have to take everything apart, to include pulling head and cracking the engine pack in two. Orher than that very reliable atv. It says it is a interference engine, but it really isn't, just a heads up.

Great video Joe. I've also noticed quite an improvement in content quality since Vinny took over as your project manager.

Hello mate, Kev from a small town called Bulahdelah, on the east coast of Australia here, i enjoy your show its great. If i could cheekily make a suggestion, could you possibly get more light on the job, specifically the engine area. And thanks for the excellent show its always a learning process for me, cheers. ps, no snow in AUS you can have that cold weather. lol

You have great skill!! How did you acquire this knowledge? Did you go to school for this or did you develop this skill in the school of hard-knocks? Either way I am impressed.

First off, love your videos. I'm not sure if it is a part of you protecting the sellers interest you acquire these items from, but it would be cool to know what you think the new value or what you would ask in price for these machines after you get them back up and running. Especially on something like this $460 quad.

If I were the previous owner of that ATV and saw your video, I'd be pissed! No at you but at the shop that quoted a $3200 repair bill. They proabably did a compression check and figured the engine was blown. The question is how or why did the valve timing jump.
