Here is a story (in both English and Dene), plus a few words of advice based on our experiences dealing with black bears trespassing our camp perimeter late at night on our trapline.

@@TheWaytoNativeChroniclesI think it stinks! I think things have gone too far with your laws. Last I knew I couldn't even use barbed hooks no more up in Canada in Ontario! The city folks have no clue what is what it in the bush. And I was born a 'city folk' so I know all about it and ain't partial, nor am I Canadian! Glad I spent summers and fall on farms and rural areas growing up. No better medicine you can carry and not leave behind then a 357, 41, 44, 45 or 454 (depnds on age and health). You will always have a chance to sit a gun down when you may need it. But a hand canon is always with you. They didn't even ban just in certain cities. They outright banned. That's NOT how to do it, and I don't even think a partial was needed. A handful of events don't outweigh tens of thousands of needed uses ever. We have similar issue in some states here. Glad mine is going other direction!

Very important to have protection. Hand gun of right caliber or Rifle.

Yes and, in that regard, I think .357 Mag is on the light side when it comes to handguns. 44 Mag is better.

Wow. Fighting bears of any kind is kinda scary any time! But at night wow, ya better know what your a doing! I will definitely be buying a head lamp lite for sure now! Thanks for the great tip! Glad your all safe& sound! Ya up in my neck of the woods , I had two put 2 bears down 4 days ago. About 7 mins. Apart! Found a young heifer dead in the bush pasture little over a month ago, now we’re missing a month old new calf! Hardly any wild blueberries & Saskatoon berries this year! Don’t really know if the bears are killing or not! But they were coming right up to the yard ,2 times a week. Lots of young 12,13 year old kids here with us, so bears had to go! Tks for your wonderful/teaching videos! Stay safe my friends & happy hunting! Joe Bush Out! Hiding in Northern Saskatchewan Canada!

Hi Joe. Yeah, the lack of a good berry crop has a big effect on how meat-hungry bears will become in the fall, I'm pretty sure. For them, it's either fatten up or die during their winter slumber before spring returns. That's strong motivation for them.

I'd be hanging those bait buckets a lot farther away from my camp. Nothing creepier than a black bear in the dark because you just can't see them.

I'm afraid the bears will break the pole holding up my bait buckets. I guess we'll see... Got a trail cam mounted nearby to capture the action if that occurs.

She is a Canadian Indigenous woman from the Dene Tha' tribe. Dene are spread mainly over northern B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and also part of the N.W.T. and Yukon Territory. I think they're also referred to as part of the Athapascan group.

I have a GP100 4" 357 (one of first made) and added Meprolight Tritium adjustable heavy duty sights to mine for just that reason, night use in defense. I need to make a custom front sight pin and mine will be ready to resight in. You may want to look at them if still allowed one. They really work and aren't too bright either. Trijicon and Meprolight I have both used and like both. I sware by them. Replace the elements every 7-10 yrs and that is cheap to do. Life is 11 yrs til half power. Also use a Petzl headlamp at night and keeps your hands free. Also swear by them too.

I really like to hear Dene spoken it is such a soft singing most pleasant to hear. Quite a few years ago one of my friends ,now passed away, had an experience with a trouble some black bear in his hunting camp. For a few nights this bear would come round and bear handle all their gear , scare the horses etc. They got tired to this so they got a can of ether and wrapped it in bacon and set it out by their untility trailer. Middle of the night they heard a comotion , checked no bear no bacon no can of ether. At daylight they did a search about the camp and 20 yds about there was a very dead black bear and the ether can nearby. The bear bit the can it expoded in his mouth, axphiciated the bear filled it lungs with ether and that was that. He said it was better than waiting up all night to get the bear. I have many bear stories some my own and some from friends. I remember hearing a bear steal a quarter of moose at about 5.00 am. I chased the bugger down the beach and he dropped the quarter and I took it back to camp. Not to worry the plane was coming to pick us up that morning, so no worry about a repeat . Too many stories to tell.

@@TheWaytoNativeChronicles Now that family uses lysol , gives the bear a bad taste for days not sure if it kills them like ether. My neighbour wraps bacon on his electric fence around his chicken pen. One bite yipes. I have 3 electric fences around my apple trees. This year not many bears showing up yet in the West Kootenays of BC. Picked apples from 2 trees today. 2 to go.

Have you ever considered using bear spray, with a gun backup?
@TheWaytoNativeChronicles
@TheWaytoNativeChronicles 15 күн бұрын
Definitely considered it but, since I have guns (and know how to use them), spray seems rather redundant.

@TheWaytoNativeChronicles Yes I find myself in the same situation, but I like to have a non-lethal alternative in some cases. Where an inquisitive bear has gotten too close for comfort, I've found that the bear spray works good to scare it away. Now that being said, I would probably use a gun if it was charging me. Luckily I haven't encountered that situation yet.
