I so agree with Mary Ellen, choose life and be ready to accept the consequences of poor choices. I too would love to see you do a Celtic calendar with photos of the cottage and gardens.

Great chat! Both my husband and I were raised by frugal New Englanders who grew up during Depression so taught to shut off light when you leave the room, put on a sweater or shawl if your cold and don't waste food. We do eat some meat - local, organic, pasture raised but mostly veg and fruit and some grains. I was also taught to can by my Grandmother and Mom so put up a lot of food from our garden for winter. We heat with wood as well. So if power goes out for a spell we'll manage just fine but so many people do not live frugally and respectfully on Mother Earth. You have a large audience now and can hopefully make some folks think about living lightly on the Earth. So enjoy these little walk and talks. Blessings!

I love listening to you - it's like chatting with my Earth Sister! Thank you for addressing issues people don't like to talk about. And living sustainably and kindly is what it is all about....thank you so so much for showing people that we can live gently on the earth...plant-based living is the biggest gift we can give the planet :)

You are so correct re veganism...others are so quick to condemn and "fix" us!. That is why I am looking forward to your recipe book and of course Christmas at Bealtaine..let me know when I can pay. :) love from an old Brummie ( Birmingham) now in Canada.

Lovely bird! We actually have a warm fall this year. I prefer cool ones, it goes better with the fallen leaves and wood smoke. I had a friend who was an Adventist once. They spent their whole time waiting on the end, instead of seeing each day as a new beginning.

Hi Collette. I just discovered your site about a month ago and love the cottage and surrounding grounds. I would like to make a few comments on what you said today. I am a born again Christian originally brought up in the Catholic faith. I know many Christians who like you said, can't wait for the end to come. This thinking is truly in opposition to the teachings of the Bible. God told the Israelites on many occasions to "Choose Life" not death which had everything to do with living a moral life. Saint Paul wrote that we will all stand before the judgment seat of Christ and give an account of what we have done while on the earth, both good and bad. Our behavior here as you said is very important. As far as the talk radio that you referred to, it has been my experience that people respond this way to things that they are ignorant about . I have eaten a plant based whole foods diet for the past 3 years. In fact, as I watched your video today I was having an early evening snack of wonderful baked sweet potatoes topped with chopped pecans and dried cranberries along with a pot of tea...delicious!! Everything we do in life has consequences, whether it is how we treat our bodies, the earth and it's creatures or each other. We have come to a point where the earth can no longer sustain the abuse that we have heaped upon it. I have learned over time to live with less and it is a wonderful way to live. I find that it is a matter of prioritizing and having a truthful outlook about the world that I live in and about educating myself to live a better life personally and globally. In closing as I watched the video when you did a close up on the robin, I thought it would be wonderful if you published a celtic calendar with photos of the cottage and the beautiful gardens depicting the different seasons...just a thought. Mary Ellen

Words of wisdom. My neighbor has about 15 head of cattle. We are experiencing a serious problem with coyotes in our area. He buys 3 donkeys. Puts up an electric fence around 10 acres. Has a 2500 Sq. Ft home all for 1 person. Yesterday he complained about his new electric bill and the cost of grain for the winter. Go figure.

Your thoughts are so wonderfully thought provoking! I believe that your positive and loving thoughts toward Mother Earth are counteracting some of the destructiveness of others, as I hope mine are. I don't see this as a particular religion, but the basis of all religion and even and especially of original Christianity. Those who confuse the "end of the world" with the end of the earth are sadly mistaken. We are not to destroy the earth and that is in Rev 12. The "world" is the world of mankind--political, power hungry, greedy, egotistical (what to eat!)--and that is soon to end. I see the positive loving thoughts of all life (save perhaps some egotistical humans) rising like a geyser of light into the heavenly realm and sharing their joy and love as one. My frost happened last week and I had to say goodbye to all my annual friends and give encouragement to my perennial friends until we meet again.

I don't hole up in one room over the winter as I share a small apartment with my son. Rather than use the horrifically expensive electric heat radiators in each room, we use small space heaters only in a room that is occupied. Start the heaters before bed and it's toasty enough for the night. Only turn on the heat in the bathroom when you're showering, etc. This saves us so much in electricity costs and I"m sure is kinder to the environment. I look forward to the day that I'm living out on my land in a tiny house and using a wood stove for heat. Cheers.

Life is an absolute blessing and adventure for me. I do it with chronic pain which gets me teary at times, but I wouldn't give it up for anything!. So love my garden. Temps here are much hotter and humid. I live in the beautiful ranges and dairy country behind the Sunshine Coast in Qld. I'm hoping to move a little south to help with the nerve pain after I finish painting here. There are many young ones and older ones here going back to a simpler lifestyle with good small property management and lifestyle change. I don't do TV and feel I don't miss anything I really need to know and certainly don't need the 'fear' passed on. We do not need 'stuff'. There is peace in nature. Blessings xo

I think the problem is that for so long we've lived 'high on the hog' and we've lost sight of the fact that the extravagance of our way of life and eating comes at a high price. 3 large meals a day, plus snacks are not uncommon. Several holidays a year, usually long distance are not out of the ordinary. The use of a car for even small, walkable journeys is considered a necessity. I don't advocate turning the clock back, but surely we can marry some of the common sense ideas from the past with our modern technological knowledge and come up with a more sustainable way of living? My grandmother who lived to 96 had a maxim that she lived by - All things in moderation. I think that's a good place to start.

No meat lover can argue against less being better. I'm not entirely against eating meat it but I think it helps to go back to our roots of taking only what is needed and using everything. If people had to kill to get their own meat, there'd be more vegetarians. There is a responsibility that must be taken and people have been avoiding that for the most part I think,

Although the rest of my family eat meat (and they have drastically reduced how much!), I have never liked the taste or texture. I find it revolting! So, having been vegetarian for decades, I moved on to being vegan 3 years ago. I know that it's not for everyone (and I certainly wouldn't preach!!) but I agree wholeheartedly that everyone would benefit from eating more fruit, veg and grains

I agree that we need to adjust our diets, but vegans, at least in America, are a bit different from vegetarians. They like to be bullies, calling anyone who eats meat even in moderation - or wears fur lined boots in winter, for that matter - a murderer. I've even had a vegan insist that a friend with a soy and wheat allergy wouldn't be allergic to either if they went vegan! It's preposterous. We need a lot less bullying and cruelty all around, regardless of one's personal dietary habits or needs or medical issues. It's a stupid thing to fight about, really. You can't change someone's bad habits, let alone medical conditions, by arguing, unless you stress them out enough to make it worse!

I once took a physical anthropology class ( majored in anthropology which is what one has to do here in the States to become an archaeologist). Anyway, according to studies done by anthropologists on remains and sites, the people of the Paleolithic era who were hunter/gatherers, ate a diet composed of about 95% of the calories coming from the women's gathering. The 5% meat was the gorge fest they had when the men managed to kill something. They had to eat all they could because of course, they had no way to store it or preserve it at that time. So, you are about right at your 95% vegan diet! EDA The data used for this project I believe, was taken from sites in the U.S. but, I would imagine they would be about the same world wide if further studies were done.
