I hate to make a negative comment on an otherwise great video, I would recommend turning the hive up into a roof when you want to undo the screws on the bottom board and you could do the same with a sharp knock to release the frames. That way you’re collecting all of the hive debris. Bio security and discouraging and other critters..

Hello Paul, it's nice to see you're posting new material !! How do you take care of comb from a hive that has starved and the bees are left in the cells ? I assume they died of starvation looking to get the last drops of honey. I'm ashamed to admit that I have one in that condition right now. Thanks.

Hi Destevoe Thanks! If we want to keep the comb we just brush the loose bees off and let the live bees in the colony we place the frame clean the dead bees out. They do a better job than I can.

I would leave the top insulation on year-round. I believe the new research supports well-insulated hives year-round.

Good point. It couldn't hurt to leave the insulation on. We use white lids on our hives and they are very cool to the touch so I don't think we need to insulate during the summer.

I had a hive that still had a bit of sugar on its inside top, 2 frames of honey and nectar, but no bees anywhere. It's like they just decided to move within 5 days of warm weather from winter. None dead, just gone. No one can explain it.

A. Poor weather during mating periods. A. There are many reasons colonies of bees die. Winter is especially tough for them so they have to be in perfect shape going into winter. Some of our other videos address how to keep bees health and thriving.

I’m a newbie keeper I started with two hives last spring they were really strong lots of honey but one of the hives all the beers left they left behind Cap honey And just left there were no dead bees

Hi 4benny I brush off the majority of dead bees and let bees in the colony I use the frames clean up the rest. We burn old comb. You could render the wax but I don't it worthwhile.

Do you scrap the comb which has bees inside the comb. I had a number of frames in a dead out that the bees are in the comb not easy to get out?

Hi Gregg We brush off the majority of bees and let the colonies we introduce these frames to clean out the rest. We don't see much of this( multiples bees in cells) as it's usually a sign of starvation and we feed enough in the fall to prevent starvation.

We move our hives around sometimes and this keeps the hive from coming apart.

Hi Gerald Well ok I guess we don't do the biosecurity perfectly. We don't scrape wax off onto the ground and try to collect the majority of the dead bees. We certainly inspect for AFB which is the one major biosecurity issue in this situation.

Every single beekeeper does a certain amount of bullshitting. Some fib a little. Others flat out lie. He said he "tries" to keep the yard clean. If you look it is very clean. No pile of old equipment rotting in the background.
