Congratulations on everything. He's awesome and I'm a fan. There's a question that has been on my mind and it's not graceful at all. There are rumours going around that the top Udemy people are multi-millionaires and they're all living like The Great Gatsby. Brad is in that category. He's all over Udemy. So, the question is... is Brad a millionaire?

A while back, I did an internship at TiVo as a software developer. My team was fantastic, but we ended up running into a problem we didn't know how to solve. Imagine my surprise when the guy they brought in to help would have looked more at home in a biker bar than in a Silicon Valley office. Tatted up, ball cap, gnarly goatee, biker clothes, the whole 9 yards. He was one of the best developers TiVo had. Great guy and wonderful to work with.

“People that didn’t grow up programming. We weren’t progeny kids that had a natural ability to write full programs. If you are one of those types of people *god bless you that’s awesome*” I started crying when he blessed us. This whole slide has been me, I started learning programming in college and i really appreciate even that one little sentence of gratitude because I’m trying so hard to do my best. God bless you too.

Man, thank you. I am a retired auto technician, 25+ years on the field. After that my wife join the US Navy because money was not the same and kids were getting grown and needed more. I am an add person and fight a lot with perfectionist and feel not to social. I started a challenge to me and to show my kids that going to school is not bad, it takes effort, passion, time, and dedication. I finish a BS in multimedia designer and a minor in programming. Now that I am in my 40s and working a full time as a programmer I feel the mental exhaustion and lack of activities. On top of that having a wife that is deployed for several months a year and I have to run the whole house doesn't make it easier, but is doable. I love my job, and I love learning more everyday, ether car stuff or just new tech for programming. Again thank you.

Hi Brad, Thank you for taking the time to post this video. I really enjoyed your feedback. The imposter thing you mentioned clicked with me as something I've felt many times. I'm 53 now and have been working with computers since 1987. I've got a lot of experience from building computers, networking, software and web development, however, I still feel like I have a lot of holes in what I know. I don't feel like I'm where I should be in my life based on what I see others know, or have done. I'm always looking to try to fill in those gaps though, so if you need help with any programming projects feel free to give me a shout. : )

I think this is a great video. I suffer from depression and adhd and think the topic of mental health needs to be discussed more often in software engineering. About maths, me too, I sucked at them when I was teenager and I developed a kind of complex because I considered myself not being clever enough for them. However, many years later, I got into game programming and I couldn't avoid maths anymore. But that time, I decided to be critical of the way teachers taught me math when I was in school and high school. So I started learning maths from the very beginning, like if I didn't learn anything about them before. So I started with algebra, trigonometry, linear algebra until calculus, choosing very carefully all the resources I learned from and discarding all those I considered weren't good ones. On that journey, I learned about how mathematics are and how they really work, how many HORRIBLE math teachers are out there, how few are the good ones, and, above all, I learned about myself and how I learn. I put a lot of effort on teaching myself maths the right way, but I was rewarded with a precious self-confidence, and above all, I could kill that complex that accompanied me for many years. If you are programmer, your mind is more than ready for maths (seriously). If you learn them from the right resources, you will discover that they are what you were really doing all these years.

Thanks for this amazing advice and insight... I recently began teaching myself programming languages because within the next few years I'd love to land my first job in the tech field. The problem is that I go through periods where I'll be extremely motivated and excited and I'll put my all into everything. Then suddenly I'll shift into a dark period of depression and won't be motivated at all. I've struggled with both depression and anxiety since I was a teenager, and I sometimes worry whether it will prevent me from accomplishing my goals. I've also recently had to cut down my social life because many of my so-called "friends" and family don't support my career and life goals, so it's gets extremely lonely. But I feel better knowing that I'm not alone in the struggle.
