We've just met Stipa g. (4 huge mature plants) for the first time in a new house, and my husband came up with using his petrol hedge trimmer, to produce rounded 'tumps', which look good, and are already shooting new leaves. So I was SO pleased to find your item, suggesting that we had got it right, despite never having grown ornamental grasses in a garden before! Many thanks.

This obviously works great (just looked back at the video I took last year during my visit and both these looked good on the two corners even though it was getting later in the year).

I’ve used both methods. The electric is definitely superior. I do this to my three pennisetum setaceum ‘rubrum’. It helps keep them at the size that I want. One time I cut one too close to the ground . This caused part of it to die off. It’s recovered now.

I used to never use the hedge cutter because we had a big heavy petrol one but since we bought an electric one, life is so much easier 😁

I prefer the first method, it makes a much prettier sound! Oh wait, the second can produce that lovely music as well!

Much the same process as with Pampas Grass (Cortaderia) or, down here in Florida, Muhly Grass (Muhlenbergia capillaris) or Lemongrass (Cymbopogon). Although gloves are necessary when dealing with the latter, as the leaves will leave bare hands with a million papercut type lacerations.

Oh no. Really not the same as pampas grass! Pampas grass is the devil's work and deserves nothing more than setting fire to 😂 🤣 Except Cortaderia richardii, which is cool. I hate anything that can hurt you in the garden as our wild gorse spreads enough of its prickly seedlings to provide this element. Had to google Muhlenbergia capillaris and it really looks pretty.

@@GardeningatDouentza oh, I hate pampas grass too🙂. Muhly grass is very pretty when it has the flowerheads, rather nondescript most of the year. I've heard gorse wood is excellent for mounting orchids to...

Do you mind me asking how old are the Stipa plants? I have several plants in 9cm pots I’m about to plant and just wondering how many seasons it took to get to that size? Thank you

Eight years old. I bought them in 2011. Happy growing!
