This is not medical advice nor am I a health professional of any sort. Most people who take meditation seriously will at some point experience intense bursts of emotional upheaval and cognitive disturbances that can be baffling, shattering, bizarre, and even dangerous. It can be important to identify what exactly is occurring, to take steps to ensure health and safety, and to reach out for support from people who can relate to what you are going through. If you think spiritual practice is all bliss, sunshine, and rainbows... keep sitting.
Increasingly, people chart out a spiritual path without mentor, guru, or guide, not knowing the perils that await in the ominous depths of the psyche. This can be traumatic or life-altering, heaven or hell, so I'm offering tips from my experience for interpreting this experience, getting through it without giving up, and when you may need professional help.
