I replaced an alternator on a jeep once. Started it up. Not charging. Checked all connections. Everything was good. Took alternator back. Parts man said. Probably ECM. I told him test it anyway. Alternator was bad. Got another. Problem solved. Said she had a problem since it was installed. Probably bad to begin with. Good job sir.

I do not want to seem like a hater or know it all but I have been a mechanic for over 40 years 30+ at my own shop just want to give some advice, cars of about that year do not have computer controls for the alternator newer ones do that will turn them off berore they overheat and fail, letting the alternator charge a dead battery is not a good idea, most will fail in the 1st hour, good call not to turn on the AC, that would be a max load for hours, most reman alternators have a warning label that says warranty void if battery is not charged, best to charge the battery after a repair like this
@Tony-rl2fr12 күн бұрын

Never heard a brand mentioned but as an owner of 6 diff Honda/Acuras, you have to use OEM parts, especially alternator, starter, etc. They dont break often, but when they do, its gonna cost. Had this exact scenario happen with a trusted mechanic in my town. I usually do my own work, but was loaded down with work and had a convo with him about this. He said "no reason to spend double the money" and ordered an aftermarket from a "trusted supplier" and i didnt even make it 5 miles home before it crapped out. I turned around and drove back and he admitted I was right and ordered an OEM alternator for around $450 and didnt charge me a dime more than original job. Was awesome of him to do, but def not typical with most shops/mechanics.

@@trxtech3010 It's my job to not only repair the vehicle, but to help guide the customer into making the correct decision and making them aware of any possible issues. Most people don't even know what type of oil their car uses, so it's my responsibility to let the customer know what happens when you use a certain part, or a certain type of part. A good mechanic goes beyond the call of duty and doesn't just install any old part, or let the customer knowingly make a bad decision. It's not like I just flat out rudely tell them no I refuse to do that. I professionally explain each scenario and educate them on why that's a bad idea. ANY vehicle stock alternator recharging the battery from under 11.5 volts will overwork the alternator and cause it to fail. This video is proof to void the warranty on this second alternator . Vehicle owners manual will state in the maintenance section , only fully charged battery is to be used to start and operate vehicle. I would also avoid any remanufactured parts,,, the quality and dependability of “ NEW” parts isn’t good, like it used to be. A damaged alternator could take a few months or days to completely fail. Just saying. Good luck.

This video is too haphazard and hard to watch. The diagnosis was all over the place - I didn't notice you didn't check the field wire at the alternator either to eliminate that. You didn't show the physical removal of the alternator and suddenly the new alternator is in place, being bolted up - in fact the whole removal/installation process was just the removal and installation of the bolts, not that you could ever see anything. There was no explanation of the fuse box testing either - you have to remember, some people are here to learn too.

Asset????????? Do you even understand the word? The concept of what you are trying to say is correct, but a car loses 20%+ the minute you drive the car off the lot. Assets don’t lose value. It is your 2nd most expense, but not an asset.

Well said. I’m in the mobile mechanic business my self just started and I will Never leave any of my customers hanging. I warranty all my work for 2 years the only thing I don’t warranty is customer supplied parts.

@@Nicks_Mobile.Mechanics-service Well said. You sound like one of the more honorable mobile mechanics. Glad you replied.

@klwthe3rd thank you boss man. Be safe out there. Shit is scary on some of the places I work. Changing a starter out on the side if the freeway while under a car is pretty nerve racking lol. Customers are my pay check to keep my house and other items I own. With out them I don't have nothing. So I will always treat them like I would be working on my sons car. Nothing but honesty and professional work no cut corners. Done by the T by the book. Stay safe bro. It's hard out there especially for Mobile mechanics. We already have a bad name there's alot of tweaker people doing this and scamming people. It irritates me 15 years ASE certified. And I'll prove it by my quality work.

It happens. I used to do it as well. Especially for small quick jobs with first time customers. Usually gets you a second or third job. More importantly you get "word of mouth" advertising. I may get back into the business at some point.
