Those discs won't stop a rat. I put something like this over my cable TV line, it spun freely. Watched a rat hop right onto it - balanced, then down the other side. There's also several squirrels vs bird feeder videos that attempt this trick. They might get dumped once, maybe twice, but if they come back they'll have it figured.

Many years ago when I attended the California Maritime Academy, I remember a boats class where the instructor was covering rat guards on tie up lines and when he'd finished, he commented that he didn't see any reason that the rats wouldn't use the gangway like everybody else. Also on the AIS system, if your intent was on harming something, it'd be a handy tool to know where everyone else was in terms of getting in and getting out without risking too much.

On yachts the gangways don’t make contact with the floor so it’s not so easy for them. Also they have stairs below the gangway.

Having built my own rat stopping system to keep them off powerlines and climbing onto the house, these are not a very good design alone. They can and will eventually learn to jump over them in time. You actually need to add a round cone shape which is too slippery to grip. Both is best though.

Appreciating the room height on this yacht! Many overlook the value of vertical space, but even in constrained environments like city apartments, a touch more ceiling height can transform the feel of a space. It's not just about square footage; it's about the volume and openness.

4:10 I actually shipyard-worked on the Joy :) It was... a joy! ahaha If I recall one thing about the owners of the joy was that they were amazing people. Of course keeping details private - they allowed families of the workers to check out the yacht once it was finished so their families would have a better idea what work is done. I am relatively sure it was the Joy where we had that opportunity.

I've worked with the commercial GPS navigation systems on the order of the AIS. We would plug in approximate locations if there's a problem with GPS signals. Most systems need a fairly accurate date/time group to establish the connection. Moreover, you need a connection from several satellites for an accurate position. But, yes, you can manually alter your location.

Its very interesting the systems and specs you bring up on these vessels. Id like to know if these pleasure yachts have ice rated hulls? Also id like to know how they perform in heavy seas. I mean those ones where the boat is riding and crashing in massive swells. Somehow those low rear of those boats and all that fancy windows and glass all around those open deck walkways look like they would scoup up lots of water.

I am familiar with our 42' Beneteau sailing boat which many people have admired on both sides of the Atlantic. I have to say that the size of these privately owned motor yachts tends to humble, not only me, but many others. These are of truly an incredible size and replete with extraordinary luxury right down to the private escorts....which I am familiar with but have never used personally. Then again, I am not an arms manufacturer/dealer, an international banking executive familiar with how to move money around the world in such a way that it actually disappears etc. etc. although I have friends who know how to do it and, in fact, do do it .....or a successful politician.

speaking of unwanted guests, Ive always wondered about how they deal with random people getting on a boat, either to steal things, or maybe as paparazzi trying to get some pics of someone famous in their underwear. I know that marinas have policies that only certain people can be on the pier itself, but often, theres just like a railing separating the two. Getting in would be very easy. Do it at night, hop the railing while no one is looking, and hop right up that ramp onto the boat. So what do they do to prevent and/or deal with situations like that?

Good thing the boat had a diver onboard, fortunately for me, the diver, each time the fouling was easy to remove. and didn't get into any seals. Why no rat stoppers aft? AIS is often shut off when entering a harbor, just not to reveal the exact location in the harbor. Technically you can alter your position but normally it's difficult. The position shown is the last known position för Find Ship 18 hours ago. If you look at an online plotter that listen to live AIS signals, you won't see her.

@redwolfexr
@redwolfexr 3 жыл бұрын
Its not just taxes, there are all SORTS of laws that can be inconvenient. US registry in particular can be restrictive. (US Crew, US Captain, USCG safety mandates which are just different than others) They also want US built, but they grant exceptions for that all the time. Imagine needing a new deckhand or cook on a US flagged ship in the Pacific and having to fly an American one in. (you can have a small number of foreign crew, but they have to have right to work in the US)

As Daniel mentions there is a lot more to cost than just sales and registration costs. If you are chartering, you also have to consider VAT rates from the country of register. There is a level of added security if you are a US flagged ship as the US Navy and Coast Guard will sail to your aid, plus you also have access to a number of US territorial Islands that non-US flagged vessels have to jump through hoops to get to. I would argue that is more of something a smaller owner operated/handed yacht would be concerned with than yachts covered on this channel.

Talking about time off….so many times I would go into town then get on the bus to work when I wasn’t working, or I’d go to town to shop & rush to get on a bus about to leave….then I’d sit there, feeling a complete idiot because I was supposed to be going home. The worst bit was the first bus stop was about half a mile away and there wasn’t an easy or quick way back to the bus station from it 🤦🏼‍♀️ As stupid as I was I used to teach 😂 on forms, insurance for school trips for example it would have my name on the ‘adults responsible’ list 😂

I watch my favorite US Navy Torpedo Retrieve move from Key Port Washington to BC Nanoose Bay test Range. I have gone to meany open house days at this test base. All the great vessel are open to public. So it's not a big security risk watching these Naval vessel move around. I just love watching them,. And I see them turn off there AIS. Myself I'm like you watching where your work space moves. On a side note, saw a serplus Navy underwater sonar tracking vessel, very large that was up for sale. The guy doing walk through was saying how easy it would be to convert. To private world cruise vessel. Being it stayed out at Sea for 6months. It had fuel enough to go around the world. It had a Hospital space ( separate compartment) it had huge A frame rear boom. Small crane with ungodly lift capabilities. It had ROV spot on back deck. Just my DREAM vessel. With the issue of fuel now with these super private vessels. That surplus Navy vessel would not be looking for fuel barge bunkering, in my Humble opinion. My gosh these Millionaires could just use it as a refueled for there super size vessels.

Not all ropes have rat guards or shore power lines. What's really going on with rats. Great channel and very informative about life at sea. I haven't heard any horror stories of missing crew, owners, intergenerational scandal on the high seas. Do you have any stories?

I think “A” is a prototype of the USS Zumwalt stealth destroyer. Similar shape.

Hi there, as a deck officer or a captain, you should know that AIS signal is not transmitted by wifi, but by VHF. So the position of a vessel on Vesselfinder or Marine traffic is an old signal that is updated only from time to time. ITo my knowledge, a ship is not able to change its position on the receiver of another VHF received station or chartplotter by itself. A SAR-vessel or even every other ship shall NEVER use a ships position on WIFI such as Vesselfinder or Marinetraffic.

Interesting how the Nirvana had those anti rat disc's on the bow line, but not on the stern line or electrical lines

About 12 years ago we spent about 1 year @ a rocky marina. We still feel the deck heaving under our feet. Sold boat 7 years ago.

Hello. You show the disks on the lines to protect from 4 legged friends but none on the electric/water lines!! Great videos by the way.
