OK brothers, I have a 2013 Jetta Sportwagen (beast) 2.5 and serpentine layout similar to above so I offer this: I put the belt over the top pulleys and rollers first, all but inner drive pulley. Although the tensioner was all the way open/extended I could not get belt over larger outer (AC) pulley. Success came when I first put the serpentine belt over the water pump pulley, the tensioner and also inner drive pulley first and then was able to push it over the alternator and lower idler pulleys from above. Good luck. Also, It is imperative to have a flex-wrench 15mm to move the tensioner. Very little clearance in there. Last advice: removing and replacing the AC belt tensioner roller/pulley is easy and gives you more room to maneuver from below.

that shit was hard as fuck! i tried everything and the only thing that worked was to take off the second tensioner, and then use a breaker bar with a 15mm wrench to pull the tensioner WAY back and slipped the belt over the tensioner pulley. 2009 volkswagen beetle 2.5l

I have seen videos with people changing the belt without even messing with the pin you are talking about. In general which is easier, opinions?

It's iritating, but do-able without pinning it. I like pinning personally.
