Dean never had to go big, go high, He was always calm, smooth, cool. He would have a girl right next to him and sing to her in the exact same style, volume etc. He was an intimate singer, not a big crowd/stage style singer. I think a lot of the time people assume bigger is better. He's my favorite singer because he is so smooth, I do his songs when I do karaoke. Unfortunately not all of his songs, like this one, are available as karaoke tracks. Anyway, king of smooth. king of cool.
@lindashelley36356 жыл бұрын
Rick Resendiz I agree with you to a large extent, but Dean COULD pull out all the stops when he wanted to. His versions of ‘Story of Life’ and ‘Buddy Can You Spare a Dime’ for example, will send a chill up your spine.

How has it come to pass that the American public has forgotten the pure magic of great vocalists and classic ballads such as this? Today's "music" has too much percussion, too many meaningless words, too much screaming, and no melody!
@Mr.Swankly4 ай бұрын
Harold Westbrook- Number 1, you’re a bit late to the party on that percussion and melody take of yours. Ya heard of a Dino album called THE LUSH YEARS. It came out in 1965! As it relates to your complaints, they are addressed on the back cover liner notes. I’m reading from it now. It states the reason for the collection was to GO BACK, to let Dino shine, in tunes that recall a day before today’s BIG BEAT TOOK OVER. 1965 Harold, they are complaining about the BUG BEAT TAKUNG OVER. It’s not just Elvis they are decrying here. Do you know who they are taking aim for the big beat? The Swing records, of most notably Sinatra. It says while that’s ok sometimes we need to get back to melody and lush arrangements, as THE BUG BEAT has just about had its day. They are tired if all the drums, the bursting HIRNS as well, they want to go back to the sound of the 39’s in the form the standards were originally recorded in. Funnily enough a song like HOUSTON makes THISE 1935 records like I’m in The Mood For Love original, sound bombastic. They were complaining about the big beat taking over in not rock but Swing records of most notably Sinatra. Do you like Sinatra? In the 50’s he would release 1 slow lush “wrist slasher” albums as they called them, of which For Only The Lonely and Wee Small Hours weee the best, and follow each up with a loud percussive affair. Dino himself moved away from the lush sound towards the big bear hence the album THE LUSH YEARS- a reprieve from that big beat percussive, brash horns, up tempo, not sleepy melodies. Swing was simply a more rhythm based music, SO WHAT YOUR WHONING ABOUT IS NOT THE MUSIC IF TODAY ITS THE MISIC IF THE SWINGING JAZZZ BAND SINATRA DINO 50’s. THE BIG BEAT. Others would make albums getting away from that beat. They also would complain about it on the notes and yearn wistfully for the no drums music orchestral sleepy melodies. Hey , I live a goid orchestral lush strings smooth vocals coming out of my hi Di as much as the next guy. Just don’t pretend it’s a new development, a rock development, a hip hop development. The ones who did not adapt to the swinging Sinatra sound, like Mr Mel Torme, an insomniacs like me dream as his asleep catatonic vocals put me right out. Put the Rat Oack wanted a little pep in the step. Their versions became the definitive versions. HORDES OF MUSIC LOVERS IN 1865 WERE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE BIG BEAT OF SWING TAKING OVER. Your complaint is 55 years late and puts the onus on today’s music? Harold I think you and I know you know better than that. There were drums big big drums in the 50records , of IT DONT MEAN A THING IF IT AINT GOT THAT SWING-
@Mr.Swankly4 ай бұрын
Harold where are you? Hello? Who or what has told you that there is something going on with the American public forgetting magic and sublime swank vocalists who croon or chauentuese their way through ballads of a undeniable perfection? COME TO PASS? Who gave you 4 thumbs up here? You guys all live under the same red cap? That never ever has come to pass. It is now standard for rockers to leave their rockin bands and record standards done in the 50’s and 60’s not 30’s style. These albums sell millions or stream millions and many require a round 2 to milk the public. Billie Eilish one of our brightest young hit makers recorded a soothing no big beat rendition of this song here, seducing her way through melodies full of MAGIC. It never came to pass. Many hotels in any city or even burbs if that city have a bar and lounge where early happy hour or late Saturday nights do jazz trio or chantuesed out versions of the great ballads of the standards and remade standards era. They’re being remade again. Everything’s a niche now and this is a healthy niche and does in many PUBLIC AS IN AMERICIAN PUBLIC places take the part of billboard top 40 role. Cocktail lounges across the country play Dino next to Julie London next to today’s lounge acts. Sushi bars to posh steakhouses, conjuring up that mid century modern magic will play a mix or preferably just the definitive versions of these standards as 20 somethings to 70 somethings sip dry martinis, or like myself, scotch and sodas. Just a little pinch of soda like Sammy sang, I took the cue from Dino who at the same dinner at the same time in his favorite Italian place in Beverley Hills, where they kept a fresh bottle of J&B. It’s rot gut stuff, but sime would say that about my Glenfiddich. There are hundreds of radio stations dedicated to just this format, some heavier on the instrumental versions others strictly crooner some mix the decades lounge acts some are 59’s and 69’s purists. In hotel lobby’s where in the 99’s billboard top 40 was played as well as my local bank, it’s not even Sinatra’s swing records played, it’s ballads by the rat pack, Julie, Ella, Billie Holiday. The music itself, original mid century takes as well as vocalists from the 90’sv til current, has really gained a head of steam since the lounge and tiki and swing revival of the 90’s. But it never really left. In some decades the styles are more popular than others but that’s true of all music realky a cyclical thing. I remember El Cortez in Vegas, 1983, a member of Sinatra’s touring band accompanying the resident tinkled in ballads as he was brought tray after tray of 2 at a time, fresh squeezed daquaris , like JFK could never say no tie and balladered us til it closed, and this was a time the music of this time was at a less attention cycle, but the people of all ages were swooning to this in’83. I can’t tell you the number of weddings I’ve been to, in the last 12 years, where the couples first dance was this Indeed: magical numbers sung by silky vocalists consisting of unforgettable melodies , all ballads for a slow dance where it continued to be played at the youngsters wedding far more than anything percussive and modern or percussive in the 50s swing records. For a little uptempo theyde often play tracks from songs for swinging lovers. So Harold please believe me, I’m glad I came across your comment, rest assured that nothing of the sort ever came to pass nor do you have to speculate as to how- IT NEVER DID. The Americian Public let this music go, playing the mid century and newt voices paying homage. I would say maybe your gripe is is it’s not as much at the forefront? But I don’t think that’s true.

Continuing from last response, I think it sticks in your craw that MEL TORME was rendered limp and useless once peoole heatd these songs done in an delivery smoother more swank more connection to the audience in this case being they weren’t singing from a comatose perspective. I don’t think you like Dino. I think you miss the likes of Mel Tieme and his old and the antiquauted , affected, delivery of the 30’s singers. Granted they brought these standards to the public for the first time but without the 50’s early 60’s revamp, I do think theyde be forgotten. They were holding into some sort of Europe musty vocal acrobatic frilly Victorian thing transposed in mid Atlantic pretentious vocals. The proof is there. Take this song. Original presented in the movie, was unlistenable unbearably from some other time we had mived pass and did not want to remember- BUT THE 1935 version rendered unlistenable then done by Julie London in 1955,Well that 55 version as well as Dinos, sound modern over 60 years later. The new versions are done in their style. See Mel Tirme didn’t get it.

Definitely see the influence Bing Crosby had on Dean; Dean gives Bing all the credit, for Perry, Sinatra, Dick Haymes, and many of the rest of the crooners, for giving them inspiration and then they all developed their own particular styles.......but it was Bing who led the way. Immensely-talented is Dean, and this is one of the best tunes I think I've heard him sing. Thanks for posting!

He went full "crooner" on this one and I mean it in the best way, similar to one of his heroes, Bing. Song by Jimmy McHugh and James Moody... the latter a great R&B and blues writer/performer.
