The way he just says it so cavalierly is what gets me. It's like admitting that he doesn't care about dean is just talking about the weather. It's quite frightening and extremely well acted.

I called him Turbo Sam because I loved this arc. It also really highlighted Jared's acting choices AS sam, so when Sam came back you appreciate him a lot more. Also the moment he upgraded to a Mark 23 I knew he had no soul, and as soon as his soul is back, 9mm. One of my favorite details. 9mm Taurus? Decent accuracy, low stopping power, easy to wound, bullets don't penetrate far. Probably more for sentimental value and for the fact that it isn't lethal to everything you aim at. Mark23 with .45 ACP round? That'll kill whatever you're shooting at, wherever you hit, and the neighbor, and scare the neighbor's neighbor. Knowing that Sam could so... easily... be Dean's superior as a hunter if he just didn't care was great. Watching Dean struggle to be "The Sam" in every situation was priceless. I like to think Sam "I get knocked out 4 times a season" gets knocked out because he cares too much, he thinks too much, he's rethinking things angstily. Turbo Sam? Getting it done with absolutely no regard - sure, a bad guy, but it said so much about what Sam could be. It was refreshing - but definitely needed to end, I wish they'd taken Jack's soullessness as far. Turbo Jack should've been cooler.

@@BigMac8000 Yes haha, Dean being the sensible one was a funny plot twist for a while. And I agree; soulless Jack was very boring to me. Probably because he was technically a 1 year old who aged really fast or something like that. Either way the writers still missed a big creative opportunity to really pull the trigger on him as a soulless character.

Lucifer Sam didn’t want to fight his brother and even at the end, still loved Michael. Robo-Sam didn’t care about any one or anything but himself.

Sam's entire soulless arc really reminds me of a (former) friend of mine. I had to play Jiminy Cricket because this dude truly had no internal sense of empathy and he never felt guilty for anything. This conversation that Sam and Dean are having reminds me of one specific conversation where I was trying to explain why his Mom was mad at him. "If what I did was so wrong, why don't I feel guilty?" "Do you ever feel guilty?" "Not really." "Then we need to get you to a doctor because that's not normal. Glad you're telling me but seriously dude you need an internal conscience." This was in the middle of a decade long friendship where I would routinely need to explain why other people got "so emotional" or talk him out of something that would "help him out" (usually because whatever the idea was helped him at the expense of others). It was a lot of comparing what other people were going through to things that had happened to him. It was also a lot of "what if" quizzes. I'm not a therapist, but holy cow if I kept a diary at the time I probably could have published it as a case study. All this to say, Jensen Ackles really nails this bizarre dynamic of being close to someone who physically can not care about whether you lived or died. Jared Padelecki delivers a psychpath's casual attitude to upsetting situations very well. He also really nails the "pretending to have an emotional response that I don't really feel" while still delivering a convincing performance of those emotions.
