Kitchenaid Artisan with a stripped out worm drive gear. Common problem for a kitchen aid if it's been used heavy for mixing dough.
The gear is plastic, but this is not a bad design or design to fail.
It is a sacrificial part. It is the weakest part in the drive, so If the beaters jam or the mixer is over used on dense material. This gear is designed to strip out so other more expense parts of the motor are not damaged.
This gear is quite cheap and easy to change compared to the armature.
These are one of the best mixer you can buy, and i would be a big fan of kitchen aid mixers.
They are very well made and very powerful.

I have rebuilt a number of these units and have found that there are two ways that most often leads to this repair. One is getting a spatula or other item in the bowl while mixing that locks the beater second most people never put some veggie oil on the accessories drive shafts like a grinder and they bind up and stall the drive. You are right this gear is made to fail and save the motor. Very well built mixer, I have three and used them for my restaurant.

Thanks for the education on how to fix the KitchenAid. I truly learned something that I did not know. And you just proved that we are part of a throwaway society that was a simple repair and it makes perfect sense that that gear would be plastic so that it would break first before the rest.

Nice informative video. I’m glad he mentioned using food safe gear grease. Using the proper grease is actually very important. I once learned this repairing gears on a commercial kitchen grinder and used gear oil. It was too light weight and ended up seeping into the motor bearings and seizing them.

Doesn't really matter what kind of grease you use if you pay attention and stop using it if / when it starts leaking. Some of the 'food grade' grease is crap and breaks down quickly and it's not exactly anything I want to eat. The grease is supposed to stay in the machine, then it won't bloody matter will it?

Some people complain about the 'new' models using a cheap parts and talk about this plastic gear. Truth is they were ALWAYS plastic, just the color of plastic changes depending on supplier. The old old machines used a grey plastic and was actually machine cut. It looks like metal, but it's not.

Question: why have a sacrificial part to save the motor should a jam occur instead of a racheting mechanism like in a drill gearbox/chuck? When it jams then the racheting mechanism engages and an audible sound is made to alert the user of jamming. No sacrificial part needed, no burnt out motor on jamming. Considering how expensive some of these appliances are surely they can adapt a similar mechanism from a drill gearbox?

Many machine tools (drills, lathes, etc) use plastic gears in the primary drive location to reduce noise, not a cost saving intent. It wouldn’t make sense to try to save pocket change in a multi-hundred dollar machine by using a cheap gear, which would ruin your reputation in the process. Any machine can be broken by abuse or just plain worn out over time. Also, it is a senseless waist of grease to load so much into the gear case like that. In the first few minutes of running, the gears will clear a path through the grease and fling any excess to the inside of the case. The gears will never see all that extra grease again. Simply applying a smear of grease to the worm gear and the worm wheel will suffice.

I love my Kitchen Aide Mixer. But the thing that I don't like is the plastic gears that is in the mixer. Plastic gear meshing with a metal gear just choose the plastic gear up. Don't get me wrong I get it there is a reason and a purpose for the plastic gears. I just think it would be a much better machine if it has all metal gears.

Seems like a plastic pin could break too easily. Seems like you would want something with more surface area which could possibly flex in some situations but break in others. Although I suppose it would be ideal if they could make it work similarly and especially if it was easily user serviced.
