Here is Deanna Durbin singing Frank Loesser's song "Spring Will Be a Little Late This Year." The song comes from Robert Siodmak's rarely shown 1944 film "Christmas Holiday." Also starring in the film are Gene Kelly, Gladys George, Gale Sondergaard, and Richard Whorf.

Deanna has done many non-classical numbers. She's great! I have all movies and LP records.

I always find it fascinating in movies like this where you have a great singer like Deanna Durbin performing, and the people around her seem to be barely listening or else ignoring her altogether. It wouldn't matter were it just the "extras" doing this, but as I recall, the guy at the table by himself becomes a main character, and he didn't make much of a good first impression on me by ignoring the gorgeous-sounding...not to mention gorgeous-looking...Deanna.

Very impressive film on a number of levels. One of Siodmak's best, most profound, and most subtle films. I highly recommend seeking out as pristine a copy of the film as possible, so as to fully appreciate the rich visual textures of Woody Bredell's cinematography.

That crane shot at the classical music concert is one of the most beautiful shots I have ever seen in a movie. Then the music is reprised in the final scene. Just amazing.

@@bobsmith3217 Absolutely! And then there's the later classical concert Durbin and Kelly go to, where there's that rather "modern" cut from the conductor beginning the Beethoven piece to the violinist beginning to play "Always" at the restaurant they go to afterwards, followed by a crane shot up to where Durbin and Kelly are sitting, and after some conversation, the camera follows them down the stairs to the moment where they almost dance, but the song ends. (It's Gene Kelly, but they *don't* dance, haha.) And the earlier scene at the brothel where the camera follows Durbin and the lieutenant as they circle the camera in a 360-degree dance movement around the room. And so on....

Deanna is a terrific torch singer. She would have given Lee Wiley a run for her money if she had stayed in that genre, both in voice and looks. Please make this clip longer on both sides so the combo gets heard playing the entire song. Hearing the dialogue won't matter. Thanks for posting this.

If only the movie provided the combo's full performance! Deanna Durbin has never been a favorite of mine but I love this performance, which is so much more understated than her usual approach. I credit the director (Robert Siodmak) though it might have been somewhat else. What's odd is that she gives a rather perky tilt to this poignant song, as if she (that is, her character) is in denial. We soon learn that in fact she's suffering, but that's not how she sings the song. And somehow it works.

When one compares the torchy, jazz soundtrack version of this number with the sweeter more poignant studio version, it barely sounds like the same singer. Her vocal technique was truly amazing. Who but Deanna Durbin could sing opera arias, Great American Songbook standards, and traditional ballads with the same efficacy?

Anyone else see a resemblance to Amy Adams in the way Durbin is made up, lighted and photographed in this scene?

A wonderful performance with classy film noir direction and photography. A small and slightly disappointing oddity is that there's no trombone sound when the trombonist begins playing, but towards the end the trombone becomes audible. I wish the film contained the whole song, including the instrumental portions, but this is all it grants us. .
