This week my friends Ray, Jay and I decided to fit in one last wild camping / Bushcraft night before my trip with Ray to Asia. I chose to walk to the usual forest location from the town of Matlock in Derbyshire. I fancied a longer walk this time so I made my way there via the iconic Riber Castle which has been used for many things over the years, including in the film Dead Man's Shoes by Shane Meadows. I also walked up through Lumsdale which is a beautiful historic sight that is now under the protection of the Arkwright Society. We had another great but cold night in the forest and I shot a little bit more time lapse with my Canon DSLR. This might be my last video before going to Asia in 2 weeks time, I intend to vlog from there... internet connection permitting :-)

Anytime my alerts tell me you've posted a new video, it's a good day! Thanks for the history and geography info that you add to your work. I really enjoy the way you provide that context for your rambles and camps. As usual, very nicely done.

Thanks Dean. Another great video and time lapses working well. I guess you would have to stay up all night to get a long time lapse clip! Had no idea dead man's shoes was filmed up there - thanks for sharing that as well as the local history. So much to do and so much to see and your videos do inspire us all to get out more. Always a trade off with work and house chores however! I’m sure Jay will take up the solo challenge whilst you are off to Asia..

Hi There Dean ,,, another smashing video,,, instantly recognised the opening shots in and around Matlock and have been up to Riber castle a couple of times,,, (great view) but as for the back water of Lumsdale I knew nothing of it,,, and it looks very interesting even as a casual visitor you will be able to establish the reasoning behind the water courses etc,,, and where the mills would have been even if they have long since been robbed away and recycled,,,,, Great description and set of links thanks,,, Found your audio thing (Forgot what its called) spent best part of an evening learning about the silk mill etc,,,, some very interesting interviews,,,,, thanks..... Looks though you had a good night ,,,, stew in a camp fire roasting bag,,, (You should patent that one) perhaps safer than Rays caramelized sausages,,,,, But I was saddened to find out the bush craft knives were from Sweden,,,, As I commented to Jay ( I thought you Lads where true to your roots ,,,, I was thinking yes if you broke them open they would have "Spear and Jackson" written through them ,, or Sheffield ,,,,, I thought if they could afford to carry the weight of a Luxury condiment then it would be "Hendersons Relish " without a doubt ,,,, I thought theses Lads would never allow Worcestershire sauce into one of their camps,,,,, nor would anything but Sheffield steel be their choice,,,,, In fact I thought they are the type of Lads who would go on a Blacksmithing weekend together to forge their very own Bush craft blades ,,,,, ) As you can see from such a comment I was deeply shaken,,,,, but im sure I will get over it,,,,, ( Heaven forbid you take such a knife on your upcoming trip and it was confiscated at customs ..... ) and if I don't speak to you before your trip,,,, have a great time and stay safe,,,,,,, many thanks ,,,,, Alan

Thanks for watching Alan, I'd not visited Lumsdale myself until I began my local history project 4 or 5 years ago. So glad I did though as it's such a great place and very tranquil indeed to say it's so close to Matlock. I'm not sure what would be written inside me if I was to be chopped in half... Born in Sydney Australia, lived in Adelaide, lived in Nottingham, Sheffield but mainly Derbyshire. I think it would be a mass of jumbled text and like when you get a dud batch of seaside rock :-) Only lived in Sheffield for a year, spent most of my life in Derbyshire so I would definitely say I was a Derbyshire Lad... I'd like to say that if you cut me in half I'd have a seam of gritstone from the Peak District running through me somewhere, or possibly some blue john from Castleton haha. I won't risk taking my knife with me, I'm used to travelling to Australia where you can only just about get away with taking the air in your lungs into the country... Everything else is forbidden pretty much :-)

I once took my bike with me and it was during the time we had foot and mouth disease in the UK. They went over the tyres on the bike with a fine tooth comb and disinfected it. Bio security is a serious thing over there. This time in 2 weeks I'll be on my way there, looking forward to making some memories and some videos in Asia

Once again a very enjoyable video. I have fond memories of Riber Castle when it was a zoo. I didn't know Dead mens shoes was filmed there. I can picture the scene now you have said. Lovely footage with the DSLR too, do you use manual focus? I'm still trying to master video with my 700d. Cheers.
@DeanRead
@DeanRead 9 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, yeah I use manual focus as I'm still using my 18-55mm kit lens :-) would like a better one if I'm honest to make the videos sharper. The scenes in Dead Man's Shoes are pretty harrowing that were filmed at Riber, we went in a couple of times and found the spots they used. There is a huge fence around it now as they are refurbishing it all.

Daft question, but is wild camping totally legal to do anywhere? I've always quite fancied camping up on Beeley more behind Chatsworth, great views to wake up to. Always really interesting to see videos of places so close to home, I can see Crich stand from my front room :)
@DeanRead
@DeanRead 9 жыл бұрын
Wild camping isn't strictly legal, as long as you stay away from buildings and are up in hills or on moors then you should be ok. Beeley might be ok if you are away from roads etc and out of view. Quite fancy there myself :-) thanks for watching

Where in Asia are you headed? Let me know if ever you get over to Chicago. Wild camp not a good idea here in winter unless you like -30 degrees. Look up Rock Cutt state park... I live near there. It is a place of great natural beauty. Take care! Paul S

We are flying in to Bangkok and then we are traveling around / down Thailand to Malaysia... That's the rough plan, nothing set in stone as yet :-) I'd love to visit Chicago, lots of movie locations I'd like to visit. The house from Home Alone and various places from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off :-) just googled Rock Cutt St Park, wow!!! The colours look fantastic during fall. Thanks for watching Paul

Dean Read Hope you have a safe trip. Sounds great. Be careful of the water in Asia... it will really ruin things. I did not know about those movie sets in Chicago. Rock Cut has just about everything. Great boating, swimming, fishing, camping and unlike the national parks of America, it is actually free to get into. That being said, the national parks in America are well worth the money to get into. I have been to many of them in Arizona and Utah including the great grand canyon that is an experience of a life time. America is a great place for aviation enthusiasts if you are into that kind of thing too.

I'll make sure I take my Sawyer water filter just incase the water seems suspect. It's in my first aid kit for those sort of moments. I'd love to walk the John Muir trail in the states, hopefully I'll get over and give it a go at some point, would also like to walk the 100 mile wilderness on the Appalachian trail :-)

Dean I hope you font mind me asking you? Which rain cost do you ware.Reasoning ask is I have a Montane and it creates a lot of condensation. With you been out in all conditions I wondered if you have any problems? Good luck once again
@DeanRead
@DeanRead 9 жыл бұрын
Hi Andy, my coat is a Berghaus Paclite. I've been very happy with it, I've had it about 3 years and honestly can't fault it. I've not had any issues with condensation either. I've used other jackets but always go back to this one. It's not as thick as my other Berghaus winter jacket but it's been very hard wearing and has seen some action over the years. It still like new and as you can probably see in my videos I wear it all the time :-) I think I only paid about £70 for it from Sports Direct in Derby (now closed) and I've certainly had my money's worth. thanks for watching mate

+Phil Sills Hi John this forest isn’t in Lumsdale it’s further east. I’ve had lots of requests but as a rule I never give away the exact location as it’s supposed to be top secret :-) if you look on an Ordnance Survey map though it’s very easy to locate. Thanks for watching. Dean
