This was wonderful to watch start to finish buddy, great resume of a "now" whisky. While the non-chill filtration surely helps the presentation, texture and flavour, Deanston is also known for its waxiness. I think that bottle will relax a little more now that it's open, and having you purring nicely going forward. So glad you like it. Good to point out the latest packaging too. The complexity and richness of flavour means this is an incredible single malt at this age. I know all of us raving about may strain supplies, but if something's done well, it's deserves to be celebrated.

Thanks Roy! I really enjoyed this bottle a lot as you can tell. About 90% of the scotches that I have opened have gotten better over time. I think waxiness is a great way to describe it as well. The mouthfeel was very unique. Can't wait to keep sipping on this. Thanks again for talking about this because it deserves every bit of praise. Cheers!

Jason I truly love experiencing in your videos your own journey with whisky . So many parallels to my own , though I was a scotch first starter. I am invigorated by bourbons recently in my journey, but tasting the Deanston expressions again( virgin oak, 12 , 18 are the ones I have) they do indeed remain true to the journey!!! Beautiful!! Also the history lesson was factual and spot on!! I have visited Deanston in 2017, and I know more now than after a visit!!! Good stuff!!!

Thanks Graeme! This comment is the exact reason I wanted to create and share my content. My scotch journey has been wonderful and the flavors I'm experiencing in each bottle has me excited to try the next. The history is the whiskey geek in me to share the roots of where the whiskey comes from and the people that make it. Its a the best part of whiskey besides the sharing. cheers and thanks again for supporting the channel.

Very good review. Thanks Drum. Really enjoyed your review. Great clear detail. It's tangerine, jummy clementine may be ? :) I just got a NEW White tin package Deanston 12 y. old. Hope it is a good sweet dram especially NON-chilled, %46ABV, Natural color, mouth coating on sale at $53 CAD. Can 't wait to open it. Probably will get another one for my selection as a new scotch sipper, from wine sipping. IMO, Scotch costs more than bourbon, but the fact is each scotch has more different notes and delightful taste of it. Sipping Scotch is a wonderful sipping journey with Time. So, if there are 2 bottles of spirit on sale at the same price and same %ABV, then I would lean more toward Scotch for sure.

Thanks Kim. I am new to scotch as you know but this Deanston 12 was one of my favorites this year. It gets better as you sip it down. Enjoy! And yes...all the flavor profiles in scotch are a joy to explore.

This whisky really opens up after it gets some air. Give it some time in the bottle and then return and I think you will really be blown away by the luxurious "maltyness". This is great stuff! Great Value too!

I like how you just take the first sip to take it all in and just enjoy the whiskey and get a first impression before going back in for flavor notes. Great way to do it!

Love the review. Fan of all Deanston “Integrity” bottling’s. Just found this 12yr at my local Kroger liquor store for only $39.99!!! are you effing kidding me?! I got 2x bottles needless to say, Granted it didn’t come with the useless tin, but if that makes it more affordable then I can do w/o the marketing B.S. 👍🏼

You need to try Springbank 10 if you can find it (should be about the same price as Deanston) , all the agression of Ardbeg but without the peat, very unique.

Great point about color! With American Whiskey at least you can guess relative age within the same distillery's expressions (assuming same mashbill and abv) but everywhere else color means nothing to flavor/age. But natural color is beautiful, whether light or dark. I love how pale Ardbeg 10 is. Or Arran 10. Here's to pale, cloudy malts 😁
@TheMashandDrum5 жыл бұрын
Dude. It's amazing. When I first poured lagavulin 8 it blew my mind how much flavor was it such a light whiskey. Ardbeg too.

This is Ralfy's whisky of the year 2020. Combined with Roy's (aquavitae) "fan boy" reviews, I had to seek it out here in Canada. based purely on my mention ,a scotch enthusiast friend of mine forked out 90+ Canadian dollars for a bottle. I'm trying it now as I watch this video. I'm not getting all the notes mentioned here, but I'm loving it nonetheless. There's so much going on here for a 12 year old. With the right people talking it up, this could become highly desirable. Very surprising for a 20th century distillery.
@TheMashandDrum5 жыл бұрын
I would agree. I was learning alot more about scotch when I filmed this. I was told the honey/waxy texture is a signature of deanston 12. Over the last year as I tried more I can see why it's such a favorite. Cheers!
@carlh43506 жыл бұрын
Love the review and history lesson. Unfortunately, I'm just not a Scotch fan. God knows I've tried lol. I guess it's good for me because i can get 2 bottles of bourbon ~ $30 for the price of 1 bottle of scotch. Be honest ECBP at ~$60 or this?
@TheMashandDrum6 жыл бұрын
Haha. I would still take ECBP but the trying all these different scotches have given me a new respect for what scotch is and all the different flavors. This dram..was delicious and had some similar bourbon notes. Its great.

Great review, Jason! I noticed that you are swallowing your whiskies very very quickly, most reviewers are "chewing" their malts for at least 10, sometimes 20 or even more seconds. I recommend you try that to see if it makes a difference for you.
@TheMashandDrum6 жыл бұрын
Very observant. Actually my first sip I swallow pretty quickly because I want to see how much it sticks to my pallet and the finish off the first sip. the following sips I do keep a bit on my pallet to pull more flavors. I tried the "chew" and I couldnt stand the way it sounded. lol. So there is a bit of method to my madness. But thanks for the advice. Maybe I will try to chew a bit on the first sip as well. Cheers!
@macallanfinerare25526 жыл бұрын

Kentucky is weird in that some bottles are outrageously expensive and even some Kentucky whiskeys cost more than the neighboring states, while some other bottles are a bargain.

In Ontario we suffer from terrible selection and overpriced Whisky. However we seem to hit the limited release jackpot with Deanston, the 2008 Bordeaux Cask has poured into Ontario (less than 3300 bottles world wide and 25% of it came here) and last year Deanston 10 PX Finish cask strength hit the shelves at a mistake price of $76 Cad.
@TheMashandDrum6 жыл бұрын
Wow! That is a happy mistake! I can't wait to try more deanston. I've only seen the Virgin oak and 18 other than the 12. The PX finish sounds awesome.
