I bought a bottle of this yesterday for £27 in Glasgiw silverburn and love it kept going back to it and ended up drinking half of it in one siting and woke up with no hang over just sweet bourbon notes in the palate . Going to try and let the rest of it last at least a few weeks now.

Great review Erik. I was very dubious about getting a bottle of this thinking it won’t be any where near as good as the 12. How wrong was I. Okay it’s not quite as good as the 12 but it really is a great whisky as you say. I’m a real fan of Deanston distillery having visited it last year and the Virgin Oak and 12 will always be in my collection. Not had the 18 yet but I’m sure it is excellent. Was someone’s whisky of the year last year…..maybe Ralfy

I have to admit, I jumped (in small steps) some of the distillery history. But what I got from it is: not a bad development in the last few years! My experience is that Deanston is increasingly nice. May the Whisky Gods be with Deanston for a few decades! (is what I deem an almost realistic wish)

Deanston Virginia oak, was my first Deanston product I tried. I thought it was really good, especially for the price. Each time a bottle is done, I find myself replacing it. Definitely great price to quality ratio

The Virgin Oak is such a great bang for the buck. I'd still love it at $60. Lovely stuff. Deanston 12 just might be my favorite Scotch. I hope to visit that distillery someday.

Great distillery and this drop is really nice one of the best NAS statements out there. I will say one thing that impressed me off the bat with Deanston is the natural color it is amazing and deep I think they source some nice wet bourbon casks from good sources.

Thx and great review, but for Madonna...man that takes you back to the 80's. For $36 locally, it's an awesome single malt! Never thought of all those bourbony notes but absolutely they are there - all but the corn. Very nice dram for the $ and hope to always have one on hand. Cheers!

I have a random question. It you had Mellow Corn and this Deanston, would it be a good way to tell what malt barely and corn do to a whiskey? It's random, but when I had Barbancourt 15 year rum (thanks Ralfy) and Compass Box Oak Cross, I could tell what French oak did to a whiskey based on all my Bourbon drinking pass.

I've never tasted mellow corn but a comparison between a bourbon (or corn whiskey) and this Scotch whisky would be a good lesson.

Erik, you think if I blend this one to a Dewars 15yo, would work? I tried to get budget down as the single malts 12s are now so expensive…wanted to increase the dewars 15 40%abv

Just love the Deasnton range and can still find a 20 sherry. I'm just not a Virgin Oak fan. Good drinker, but there are a few taste notes I don't care for.

Great vid. This is a whisky I'd like to like more than I actually do; and that's not for a lack of trying. I just don't think that Virgin Oak works very well with Scotch malt spirit. There's nothing technically wrong with it, but it just isn't very deep despite it's good pedigree and it's just kind of vaguely Scotchy. Deanston Virgin Oak was a heck of a lot more attractive at under $30 just a few years ago, but at near $40 today, I can name a few bottles I prefer more including Loch Lomand 12, Scarabus, Bunnahabhain Stiùireadair, Glencadam 10, Glengoyne 10, Benromach 10, maybe Ardbeg 5, or if you have access, some of the Mystery Malts from Total Wine and More like Glen Fohdry French Oak ✌️

Was also pleasantly surprised by this whisky. I’m rarely disappointed by Deanston though. That stout finish was quite bland but every other Deanston I’ve tried I’ve enjoyed very much. The 12 year Oloroso fully matured limited release is excellent if you can find it

I had this but did not like it at all. It tasted like a watered down bourbon. If I wanted bourbon, I'll buy a bourbon 🙃 And there are better bourbons out there.
