If anyone buys a 240, ever, just replace the pumps and filter. Just doooo eeeeeet. Also, BOY do wheels make a difference on the cars! The red wagon looks so much more plain without the mags on it.

This is some sound advice. Its funny how boring the car looks with steel wheels

Sometimes these fuel pumps just need a little nap then the come back to life (at least to putts home), especially on warmer summer days they like to act up

They get a bit tired after 30 years of service. Can't ask for much more than that.

Fuel pumps are the most "kinda works" thing. I was having all sorts of lean issues and it turned out it was a manic depressive lift pump.

That's a great way to describe it LOL. Old electronics getting temperamental? I don't believe it.

When the fuel pumps on my 240 started to go it was super intermittent, the in tank pump eventually just died leaving the inline pump to do all the work. You couldnt tell until you hit a hill and the whole car would shake violently as it misfired rocking back and forth!

Yikes that sounds like quite the failure. Im lucky mine kicked the bucket when it did and lucky I had parts somewhat readily available.

I had a lift pump (in tank) fail in my 940 and it caused me no little pain. While attempting to remove the pump from the fuel tank I was unable to extract it because of geometry. What I did not realise was that the pick up at the bottom could be telescoped into the upper part. This shortens the whole plastic unit and makes it possible to remove through the big round hole in the petrol tank. (rookie error as my sons say) So dropped the tail shaft and removed the whole tank from the car. On getting the pump assembly out of the tank I could see the telescoping parts. Even then it took me a while to realise that this telescoping not only keeps the pickup on the floor of the fuel tank but it also enables the removal from the tank in the car.. Didn't I feel bit stupid then. But at least I completely cleaned out the fuel tank while it was out of the car. btw can anyone explain why the plastic fuel tank in a 940 has a bit which curves over the tail shaft making it impossible to remove without also removing the tail shaft? Gotta love the old Volvo.

Many years ago, I worked for a company that sold used Volvo parts. I was not a fan of that fuel pump design. Even collapsed it can be a bit finicky.
