Let me leave a translation that I did for another reaction video, especially for English speakers. The lyrics are taken from the "Alturas de Macchu Picchu" ('Heights of Macchu Picchu') section of the book "Canto general" ('General chant') by Pablo Neruda (Nobel Prize in 1971). Los Jaivas selected some verses and arranged them in a new structure to make the song. It can be interpreted as a kind of journey from modernity to the old and, in parallel, a transition from everyday death, caused by an overwhelming way of life, towards a death seen as a transformation, a step towards a kind of eternity. I may be wrong in what I say, but that is the beauty of poetry, that everyone can propose an interpretation. La poderosa muerte / The mighty death ¿Qué era el hombre? / What was the man? (The Humanity) ¿En qué parte de su conversación abierta / In what part of his open conversation Entre los almacenes y los silbidos / Between the warehouses and the whistles En cual de sus movimientos metálicos / In which of its metallic movements Vivía lo indestructible / Lived the indestructible Lo imperecedero / The imperishable La vida? / The life? Todos desfallecieron / They all fainted Esperando su muerte / Waiting for his death Su corta muerte diaria / His short daily death Y su quebranto aciago de cada día era / And his fateful breakdown of each day was Como una copa negra que bebían temblando / Like a black cup that they drank shaking Entonces en la escala de la tierra he subido / So, on the scale of the earth I have climbed Entre la atroz maraña de las selvas perdidas / Among the heinous tangle of the lost jungles Hasta ti, Macchu-Picchu / Until you, Macchu-Picchu Alta cuidad de piedras escalares / High city of scalar stones Por fin, morada del que lo terrestre / At last, dwelling of the terrestrial No escondió en las dormidas vestiduras / did not hide in the sleeping garments En ti, como dos lineas paralelas / In you, like two parallel lines La cuna del relámpago y el hombre / The cradle of lightning and man Se mecían en un viento de espinas. / They swayed in a wind of thorns. Madre de piedra, espuma de los cóndores / Mother of stone, foam of the condors Alto arrecife de la aurora humana. / High reef of human aurora. Cuando la mano color de arcilla / When the clay colored hand Se convirtió en arcilla / Turned to clay Y cuando los pequeños párpados / And when the little eyelids Se cerraron / closed Llenos de ásperos muros / Full of rough walls Poblados de castillos / populated with castles Y cuando todo el hombre / And when all man (mandkind) Se enredó en su agujero / Got tangled in her hole Quedó la exactitud enarbolada / The accuracy was raised El alto sitio de la aurora humana / The high site of the human aurora La más alta vasija que contuvo el silencio / The highest vessel (pot) that held the silence Una vida de piedra después de tantas vidas. / A life of stone after so many lives.

She is the daughter of the original drummer who died in 1988 in Peru in a car accident. The original singer of the video died in Chile in 2003 on a beach from a heart attack. The keyboardist is retired and lives in Colombia and is dedicated to the communication of the group. Only the original bassist, the original pianist and the active daughter of the group plus the new members remain.

It was for a TV festival, very popular in Latinamerica, that's why the host interrupt the final moments of the song to present the again. Yes, it is pronounced Los Haivas :-) I hope you react to other songs of them in the future, like "Mira Niñita", La Conquistada, Sube a Nacer conmigo Hermano, Corre que te pillo (instrumental), Pregón para Iluminarse or Todos juntos. Hi! Love your reaction. You're not the first person that, after hearing about Los Jaivas or other latin bands, goes for the throught of: "why i haven't hear of them before?" It's not pathetic, i think it's how the music industry work. It hard to listen on radio something that's it's not massive or from big music companies, and Los Jaivas are from that line, they were'nt in that time (70-80) part of a big companie, they produce all by themselfs and today they keep doing a lot of live concerts for free. Almost 60 years of history. So we only thanks internet for letting you and more people of the globe get the chance to know them. For your other question, i like it the two cameras, gives dynamic to the video. Kudos from Chile

The Anglosphere in general haa been very resistant to anything non-english with a handful of rare exceptions, being "the center of the world" for over 150yrs. Latin America & most of europe has generally been far more open to non-native language music (wirh english language music such a part of that). Glad you are adding your grain of sand to reverse that trend. As an aside, the J in spanish is ALWAYS pronounced like a hard H in english (except on foreign names or words) and like in french, the H is silent.

Fuera de lo que dicen mis compatriotas falta agregar que la letras de la canción es un extracto de "Alturas de Machu Picchu" del Premio Nobel Pablo Neruda, si pudieras entender español verías que es extraordinaria. Por otro lado no puedo dejar de mencionar tu muro con todas esas portadas de grupos progresivos, claramente entiendes de que se trata esto Apart from what my compatriots say, it is necessary to add that the lyrics of the song are an extract from "Alturas de Machu Picchu" by Nobel Prize winner Pablo Neruda, if you could understand Spanish you would see that it is extraordinary. On the other hand I can't stop mentioning your wall with all those covers of progressive groups, you clearly understand what this is about
