I can’t remember the influencer who said this, but I never forgot her insight: A lot of mixed race and non-black women become intoxicated by the fetishization and elevation of their skin color/ancestry within the black community. So, they stick around because it’s a self-esteem boost. In their own community, they’d be basic or even undesirable. They develop a superiority complex very quickly. But after a few kids and bad experiences, they end up regretting their choices and imagining what their life would’ve been like if they had stayed in their own culture. Their inability to start over makes them resentful of the community (even though they were the ones who shape-shifted to be there in the first place). Their resentment tends to express itself as public displays of anti-blackness and conservative signaling. What Amber Rose is doing is pretty common. This pattern also translates to how they raise their children. Ex: obsessively straightening and dying their hair, not letting them wear braids/locs or Afro-centric styles, fixating on how they dress (nothing “too urban”), not allowing black friends/partners/roommates/visitors, being disproportionately critical of their black friends compared to the white friends, disrespecting black culture in front of them, dismissing the black side and amplifying the non-black side when around family members, minimizing their children’s access to black influences or cultural figures, being hostile towards black vernacular English, the list could really go on and on. But y’all get the point.
