When I tell you I look forward to your content speaking about these specific things I can relate so much especially when you hit on the judges even in the courtroom like the black Detroit judge that really humiliated this young black dark skin girl the volunteered to help people in her community all because she fell asleep in a courtroom because she didn't have a place to live so she was just tired. A straight A student never got in trouble a day of her life but I guarantee you he would have never did that to a white little girl. So you're absolutely correct with this content in this video

For the first time I disagree with you. Please look at how Beyonce used to behave in the 90s. She was behaving rude , petulant towards her group members. Her interviews gave mean girl. But bcos there was no Twitter back then she was able to grow out of it and the Beyonce we know today. Tyla is a child and has only been in the industry for a year unlike Vic Monet who has more than a decade in the business. She is young give young black women Grace to err

It’s just crazy that there have been artists of darker complexion with the same level of beauty coming out of Africa, AHEM: Tems, Arya Starr. But they get no praise or attention or invites the same as Tyla. It’s just another example of pretty privilege and the favoring of light skin being deliberately shown. Tyla’s not even the problem, it’s the system and programming that she benefits from.

KOR has been the only channel that calls out colorism w/in the Hip Hop culture amongst the women. It’s sad but it’s been going on! Think back to when rap videos first came out! Most of them rappers wouldn’t even have a dark skinned woman allowed in their videos! Hell! From what I understand Chris Brown didn’t let darker women in his videos until recently. Same w/ NFL, BASKETBALL PLAYER, many of them won’t even let you in VIP if you don’t pass the ‘PAPER BAG” test! SAD as hell that it’s still like that today!

Any country that wasn't affected by colonizing Europeans has definitely been affected by Western media. So, colorism is a worldwide issue that many people like to ignore. I don't like how Tyla's team tries to simultaneously market her as racially ambiguous while also positioning her as having proximity to and ownership of a Black identity. It all seems very curated and disingenuous. At least, that's the vibe that I get. I wish her the best, though.

@@LoneWulf278 yes! Nicki's theatrical with it too which makes it entertaining. People may very well have been waiting for a moment to pounce on Tyla but this scenario (along with others) has rubbed many people the wrong way. I do in fact think the whole exchange was tacky on stage, from her not grabbing the cards from Halle who was clearly motioning her to take it, to asking the presenters (fellow, BLACK, more notable artists) to hold it the way she did. But I see it as an inherent lack of respect for those around you type thing. Had the lady who assisted her from her seat to the stage been asked to hold her award, I honestly don’t believe anyone would have had an issue. I think it was the lack of procedures in place that made it look tacky; as if she lacked tact to keep asking the way she did and didn’t respect the fact she’d be given this award. I think her defiant unwillingness to hold it, also emphasized to many they don’t believe she really earned this award or involved herself with the process it took to get it because from their perspective she fast tracked fame. Ultimately, I just think shawty is often tacky as heck and socially awkward. Down to staring in the camera, as she suddenly stopped dancing to Mamushi 😂. The lack of media training is clear. The confidence due to desirability, pretty privilege and knowing the right people will cape protects her from any real repercussions got her moving a certain way. But if she step too far as a POC, who DOESN’T identify as black YET continually using black people as props or to hold objects she def will see her fame fall as quickly as Daniel Caesar or even the ShxtnGigs Podcast.

I don't know if you were privy to the whole controversy around Miss South Africa a few weeks ago. Adetshina (a non ambiguous SA and Nigerian woman) was forced to step down because she was thought to be Nigerian only or not South African enough. She was replaced by a whole white walker who then won. South African's have a lot of luggage just as black Americans do around race and colorism. I’m so glad you made this video. Agreed with every talking point. I want to add that just as colorism socializes it’s benefactors to expect certain treatment, her being a thin woman also comes with a certain treatment that informs the way she handled herself on the VMA award stage. She said in her tweet after the controversy that she and Halle are “just girls” implying that Nas was the one expected to hold her trophy. Cardi B even came out to defend, explaining that the award is heavy and Tyla is “ so small” she couldn’t stand in heels and accept the award. So here’s the thing: in 25 years of broadcasts no abled person has ever needed assistance in this way. (Edit: apparently this year Gaga also asked Eminem to hold her award. It doesn’t negate my point. I’ve watched this show my whole life. The award only weighs 7 pounds. This is very new behavior that the girls are performing helplessness on award stages.) This behavior of late, especially amongst thin women “I’m just a girl.. so I need a man to open my jar” begs the question… if Nas was not standing there, instead there had been two presenters who were “girls”… who would have been expected to hold her award for her? Would she have stood there and held it herself? Would she have called back the assistant who was with her to collect it so she could give her acceptance speech? It’s just convenient that we accept that this professional dancer is too “fragile and weak” to hold her own award just as women have done many years…. We would not give this type of grace to a darker skinned woman who was not thin. She really didn’t have a good reason to expect the other presenters who are also her peers to do her bidding. Not “mean” not “rude” or even “entitled”… just like you said… it was just awkward and unpolished.

@@WinxMagicalHero it’s sad that after years of women being able to hold their own awards that y’all are now saying it’s commonplace and acceptable that we should start pretending we can’t hold a seven pound weight. I honestly feel that this is a performative behavior. Those able bodied women cannot hold seven pounds without help? My granny can hold a seven pound weight w no problem…also this does not negate my point because Gaga and Olivia are both thin. Like I said. Thin women perform helplessness, and it’s coming in fashion for us as thin women to make it known we are too smol and weak to do things. “I’m just a girl!” Is a viral meme and this is not coincidental. As we fall further into fascism and “thin is in” continues to be normalized we will see more of this “oh help me! I might just faint if I a big strong man isn’t here to catch me what ever will I do”… that’s how we sound asking a man to hold a seven pound award for us lol.

there’s a way to criticize someone without being xenophobic and using stereotypes. there are so many artists from the continent of africa who are not stuck up. a perfect example is tems, she’s nigerian and super duper nice and humble and hilarious! she’s also a stunning woman! tyla comes across as a mean girl period. it’s not anything to do with the continent, it’s got everything to do with how she was raised. it’s 2024, we have to stop being xenophobic. we have to stop assuming that africans think they’re better . that’s a projection.

Enough of them carry this mindset to say that it’s definitely a problem to point out. A lot of them do think they’re better than black Americans just based off the fact that they have a culture. Like black Americans don’t have a culture or anyone else for that matter. It’s the same way Italians born in Italy treat Italian Americans. They don’t even challenge each other when they’re xenophobic towards black Americans, for the some who don’t think that way.

Honestly, I usually agree 99% with your takes. I am not necessarily a Tyla fan but I do think she is talented and can’t be grouped in with Ice Spice. As an African I think it’s important not to overlook the immense discrimination and ridicule that we have often been subjected to by Afro-descendants from the Americas. So her embracing the “entitled” and “uppity” African label, one which undoubtedly speaks to what i described before is powerful. Now, do I think she even knows what that fully means - no. I definitely don’t. But it stands for “my african-ness shouldn’t create a different behaviour standard”. I also that in labouring the point about colourism and desire, you could’ve also taken a second to recognise how different colour is in the South African context. As well as the reality that being desired isn’t all it’s chalked up to be, especially for POC where it often amounts to fetishizing. She also made a necessary point about african music which speaks to the broader essentialism that people use to look at the African continent, and no it’s not JUST white people, Afro-descendants do the exact same thing. So whilst I agree she is not the most media savvy, I look at this from a different perspective.

Just a respectful disagreement, I think that there is so much defense of Tyla online because her conversations tend to be dominated by diasporic tensions. I’m confident that colorism affects this, but I think there is a strong amount of xenophobia & pro-American rhetoric that comes from these debates too, and Black folks who are South African or non American are defending things that Americans truly may not understand. I think this is one area where it’s also helpful to understand that all of us inhabit the power & privilege scale & it’s always helpful to check all of our own biases. I think we ALL get up in arms when we feel personally affected & there is a sense to dismiss people who are disagreeing with us as “not getting it” or being biased when they are literally saying the same things about us. Tyla conversations bring out a type of American chauvinism in very leftist thinkers that I don’t think is examined enough: you’re here now, so do what we want you to do or leave, is often the sentiment. It’s almost like the only time we become nationalists is during these types of diaspora misunderstandings. I think that is most evident in how in each of these conversations leftist Americans & Immigrant Black content creators who are typically aligned come away with such drastically different interpretations of these things.

"i dont do awards" is such a HUH?! statement but i don't think people would give her this much grace if she was more Tems or Arya -star looking. I don't think there would be many people saying "she's just awkward." It reminds me of this study that said lighter skin skinny women within the same race get shorter and less harsh prison sentences for committing the same crime as darker bigger women. Its interesting who gets to be innocent and awkward but people who rather focus on non-sense before admitting that plays apart in their reaction

Its weird. relax. We get it. She’s beautiful, cute, tiny🙄, sexy, light skinned, “good hair” we get it. It’s just your classic hyper feminine woman, and that right there is desirability. It’s definitely a case of colorism and fat phobia thats helping her career flourish because I know for a fact, it’s not just a beautiful face, but her being thin petite and curvy. I think Tyla is great and super beautiful and enjoyable to look at, but I’m not gonna sit here and make assumptions about her character and obsess over her.

Whenever I hear ppl say someone isn’t media trained, I swear I just hear “they haven’t been reprogrammed”. Media training just sounds like another word for dismantling a persons individualism and making them a celebrity robot. Media training seems useless if you can’t please everyone. It’s the entitled and parasocial relationship ppl have with celebrities that make them think celebs should be trained to take anything and not be themselves. I also have an issue with ppl being so offended that a brown woman is portraying this dainty feminine archetype and not willing to hold a 10 lb award. Olivia Rodiguez did the same exact thing and her yt and Asian community was SILENT because they don’t disrespect their ppl like we do. Further more this hate train is fueled by xenophobia and misogyny. I see South Africans and a mixture of bLaQ Americans in support of Tyla but majority of the ppl creating false hateful narratives about Tyla is blaq Americans so we really need to expose how this hate train is just simple bullying and xenophobia. She was on Blaq Americans naughty list ever since she claimed to be coloured and that’s why she’s constantly being picked apart.
