I just want to bring this to everyone's attention: In the video showing the guy taking the Polaroid photos, the first one he takes is of what looks to be a fish tank, one that emits a bright blue light, but when we see the the Polaroid photo of this tank after it's developed, there is no bright light. In fact, it shows a pitch black space in the shape of the tank. This shows that bright lights cans over expose the Polaroid, resulting in pitch blackness where the light is supposed to be. It may be that his hallway light is too bright for the Polaroid. Resulting in it appearing black upon developing.

This suffers from "too much interesting is happening" syndrome. Events aren't spaced out enough, or are not subtle enough. To get people on board with even the INKLING that this might be real means putting them through endless amounts of boring stuff that never amounts to anything, and THEN have something happen. Maybe if his chair moved around months after that dream, or we were subject to dozens and dozens of recordings that could be nothing before getting something interesting - that's more believable. Drama in reality is always endless boredom with a sudden, unexpected happening. Not a slow slope of occurrences designed to keep people interested. If you find yourself wondering if something is real, ask yourself basic questions: "why would this person be taking pictures/recording RIGHT as this thing is happening" "do I feel constant suspense or am I almost disinterested in what is going on here?" "Does all of this seem to be happening constantly?" "why isn't this person doing x, y, z obvious thing to see if this isn't just coincidence?" "why isn't this person seeking obvious help that they have access to if they're afraid?" "are we relying too much on information that the person in question just expects us to believe?" THAT ASIDE THOUGH - it's an alright story, I think. I don't dislike the guy himself as much as others here and his little story has nice twists and turns. The contents are just too convenient and rely too much on believing the narrator. Also those cats don't look at all afraid of something - their body language tells me he put some kind of food, toy, or catnip behind the door. Nervous cats, even before hissing, arching their backs or fluffing up, are very, very stiff. These ones are pretty relaxed. Tails aren't wagging, ears aren't back, not afraid to put their faces up to the door.

+G Elerson Honestly without that detail at the start about his dream with the girl, and then him asking 3 questions afterwards, it would be believable. With that part, it just reads like a standard creepy pasta. Regardless though I'm 100% sure this is fake, especially considering he's a writer with an upcoming book. I know he tries to play it off like the book has nothing to do with ghosts so it can't be related, but we all know that's not true. With this story going viral, he's still getting more exposure, and thus advertising his book.

There's no "short and quick" recipe... BUT, there are some guidelines about "real" and thus "realistic" stories to be thoughtful about if one is going to try it. First, the order of events should be sensible, but should not make absolute sense. In this story, we start with the nameless kid with a bent head appearing in dreams... build to a night-paralysis and simultaneous lunge /wake up screaming thing (cliche?)... And then a dose of "sense" from another "dream kid" (sure this time a girl) who identifies "Dear David"... (cliche of convenience)... And (of course) conveniently lay down rules JUST SO our protagonist can BREAK them... Furthermore, night paralysis (while a real condition/issue) is a hot-topic (bringing the creative types their hot-to-trot urges) and stories of woe and terror around it are a big big thing. It sort of seems to have peaked (traffic wise) but maybe not yet... So anytime you suddenly see a veritable dam break of "hot-topic" based stories, you should probably be skeptical... Reality should be constructed in its raw form. It's full of mistakes and chaos, and bad judgments that seem good at the time. Granted this isn't a lucid dreamer, so dreams should have a kind of life of their own, but the order here is entirely too well constructed for progress to be realistic... Reality also comes with lots of little side notes, mis-adventures, scaring yourself unduly over nothing, and wild-cat chasing... (lack of better terms?)... Where's the (at this point much needed) red herring? Even with the finer points on the camera, lens caps or not... He was a little too careful in those parts to show as much of that Polaroid as possible without revealing the lens for viewing... Is it covered or not? We'll never know. Trying to make something truly and remarkably "authentic" is a major pain in the @$$... Remember, when watching this (or building your own...lolz) the person running the feed is the one in charge of reality. The audience is only there to share what reality they are allowed to see... :o)
