Microtransactions, Pre-order games that are too overhyped, not fully developed release game has been too normalized. This could literally destroy the gaming culture tbh. Hearing the term play for fun made me pissed. Hey devs, that was the ENTIRE BLOODY POINT of video games,NOT TO FILL YOUR BANK UP. But no, corporate greed is always a priority over payers (cough) I mean players enjoyment because fullfiment and good will that earn more money down the line because people actually like doing business with you is now secondary to short term monetary gains that shatter your reputation and good will over and over again and make you loose customers. Oh but it's okay because as long as there are new whales hooked, gaming will go on forever. Fuck man, whatever happened to being engrossed in a video games story and gameplay that you'd forget evreything around you? What happened to the magic that made us all love this industry to begin with?

tbh, it probably will since nfts are viewed more positively in japan due to misinformation being spread about it over there. even if we tell them that nfts are bad & the reasoning why it's bad, japanese people will mark it off as "westerners being paranoid or overdramatic" so unless there's a change of perspective relating to nfts within japan, square enix will most certainly keep pushing the concept of it once it kicks off

"NFTs aren't the "evil" When big corporations wants a piece of the pie, it is automaticly evil. "Missunderstanding the technology" No, everyone knows what it is. Steam already have the marketplace and inventory built in to the store which is pretty much the same as NFTs proof of ownership only that it isn't decentralized. So this tech isn't new. "Cross-game NFTs" HAHAHA no, companies wont add that. They will add their own closed systems within their own games. Even if they did add it, that tech can be made and has been made from a long time ago without NFTs/blockchain. Fifa wont want you to transfer Fifa card to other games, they want you to repurchase them. But i guess you will have to stick to Epicgames because Valve wont sell your play to earn games that very few will earn something on.

@@thatwasinteresting.8150 Saying "this is the future, that is the future" is not an argument. That is simply trying to take advantage of FOMO in the hopes that the person reading your comment ignores any logic and just reads the big, bad words. You haven't provided solid arguments that prove NFTs will actually be a future, and if they would be the future, that they would bring a _good_ future. Others in this comment section have already debunked your claims. And let's not forget that you are acting like "the companies care for the people". No, NFTs will simply be an unregulated alternative to DLC that will allow them to make even more money. By the way, weird how people talk about NFTs being so great because "the original artist will get a cut off every sale!" (BS, discussed in other comment sections), but then ignore that entirely when comapnies would get the same thing, just because it fits your narrative better. And with how you keep mentioning that _one_ company producing that _one_ game, you are almost certainly just a salesperson/bot. So your arguments are, most likely, done in bad faith and without caring about the facts.

"Trickle-down economics" is just economics. If you make good decisions in your life, like not spending frivolously, finishing your education, not having a kid before you're ready, investing your money properly, and bettering yourself so you're not working food service your whole life and complaining why you're not being paid more for just existing in one place, you will be financially successful. Life isn't a zero-sum game, and it isn't a charity event where you show up and get something. You need to learn to survive. Part of learning to survive is financial savvy. Part of financial savvy is investing. They don't tell you this in school, but you are SUPPOSED TO INVEST your money. That's how you make more money. You don't make money from your 9-5 office job, and especially not your 11-7, or 3-11 second shift at Target or wherever. That's supposed to maybe cover your nut, but more importantly that's the starter cash for your portfolio. After you get that going, you better yourself, you learn a skill, or negotiate a higher position or salary at work. You are not supposed to work at Taco Bell from age 16 through 70 and expect to have your financial needs met as they scale up over the course of one's lifetime, that is not how economics or reality works. If you are working at the same job in your late 20s that you had as a teenager, regardless of your circumstance, you are doing it wrong.

The tokenizer can make a lot of money selling what is essentially a receipt for your art that claims they "own it" to lots of gullible people, while you, the artist doesn't see a single bit of that money. TL;DR: Your art gets stolen by some crypto bro, and used to scam people, while damaging the planet.

AAA and Indie gaming are becoming a perfect mirror image of Blockbuster versus Redbox. Blockbuster, in pursuit of steady growth to the detriment of customer loyalty, chased away all their clientele. Going to Blockbuster didn't just mean renting a game anymore. Now you were getting hounded at the counter to open a line of credit, get a rewards card, rent five more videos so you could get the seventh free, buy overpriced popcorn and soda, etc. Redbox, ultimately inferior to what Blockbuster USED to be, offered the one thing that mattered to people who liked renting media- the media.

NFTs in games is basically CSGO skin except earning the skin could vary and a bigger issue is that NFTs in games aren’t limited to skins. Phantom Galaxies was an NFT where you can pilot these giant mechs that could transform. You were about to fully customize them and the mechs themselves were the NFT but they also mentioned that each mech had unique weapons meaning you could sell a really strong mech to other players. Luckily the game hasn’t released yet and it seems like the game is imploding because their discord server got hacked and they posted a fake registration. It seems like some of those whales waiting on the game just lost whatever hope they had for the game.

Investors love talking and hearing about the things they invest in. A lot of gaming companies rely on investors for their business, and so they maybe highly incentivized to talk about or do something related to NFTs and Metaverse to make the company seem more valuable to investors. As of recently, a lot of investors have been getting into NFTs and Metaverse without really understanding their value, but because it's trendy. The Ubisoft digits is pretty dumb because it doesn't really have the advantages that NFTs usually have, but Ubisoft hoped investors will throw money at it. However, looking at the stock price of Ubisoft, it only went down and then back up to where they were before. The one silver lining about this is that previously burned out players have been flocking to indie games, and their market share has been steadily growing every year. The problem is that it's not an issue of whether one is "better" than the other -- it's the fact that "Indie"** games can never and will never be a _replacement_ for AAA games. AAA games have always existed, since before the term was even used. There has always been and always will be a difference between a game that costs _x_ to make, and a game that costs _10x_ - _1000x_ to make. _On the whole,_ I would rather play a AAA game from 30 years ago than a modern "Indie" game. ** I don't put 'Indie' in quotes derisively, but simply because the designation doesn't accurately apply these days, since 99.99% of "Indie" games are not self-distributed, but have "publishers" (Steam, GOG, etc.). A more accurate term (Not a _good_ term -- just a more accurate one) would be something like 'A game' or 'B game', since the only meaningful differentiating factor today is the quality and quantity of the final product, and not whether a dev uses a publisher or self-distributes. A case in point is that Minecraft is not a game, it's a sandbox. There is no gameplay. You don't win or lose. You just have fun with the tools you are given. That kind of thing can be a lot of fun of course, but that's not the same thing as a game, which has concrete goals which the player either succeeds to meet or fails. An early example of this kind of experience is SimAnt (From Maxis Software, the company that created SimCity, SimTower, etc.). Maxis even called its products "Software Toys" in order to acknowledge that they couldn't be properly classified as games. At any rate, what about Text Adventures? Graphical Adventures? @@Cloud-og1qo Well first, I don’t think skins should even be worth $20 (a skin does not add an extra 25% of value to a $60 game but at this point in modern gaming who knows?) That said, at most they should be about $5 development time and costs considered, especially with potentially thousands of players buying it. Being able to resell a skin, especially if it’s a duplicate or one you don’t like would be cool, but I would much rather have it be purchasable by other players through in-game currency than real money, much like how in Forza games you can go to the in-game auction house and buy/flip cars with credits. This system should also not effect the in-game grind. It should be a reasonable amount of time you spend trying to get something, and anything in game should be realistically obtainable with your own in-game effort (based on the average person of course). The ability to purchase things should be for people with more money than time on their hands, and that is one of the few places where I would be ok with a company having a stream of revenue as long as the items obtainable through real money are also obtainable through some sort of gameplay. That’s just my own two cents though, I’m sure some people would prefer if they could sell their skins for real money, but I’m sure the company will also take a decent cut of that money, and there might be some legality issues as well. Sorry for the huge paragraph of a response

Man, I just wish that eventually the legality of all of these practices with NFT starts to be contested world-wide. There is nothing really wrong with the NFT technology itself, but all its uses up until now had more downsides than upsides. It is always like this in new unregulated markets, everyone trying their best to scam the most amount of money while it still technically not illegal (and not necessarily legal). And I really hope when it happens that these big companies get legally and finacially hurt for negligently incentivizing this malpractice.

That ending sums up pretty well how I've been feeling about "AAA" gaming for the past decade or so. I think my newest "AAA" game in my Steam library is like 8+ years old already, lol. When all the resources are going into maximizing the monetization and pushing eye candy a little bit further than last year, while just recycling the old tropes and cookie cutter gaming experiences, I lose all interest. Most of the engaging gaming experiences tend to come out of indies and mid-tier studios these days. If I buy "AAA" games, it is usually years after they stopped pushing out new content and got some "GoTY edition" with everything included for a fraction of the original price.

Valve markets are actually a very interesting topic to bring up. They essentially have a monopoly on game items, for instance in Counter-Strike:GO. They have their steam marketplace which is essentially a token, not money because you can't withdraw it. If Valve implemented NFT's to which you could essentially own the in-game skins, trade outside of Valve's domain and be guaranteed real value then what is the harm? Growing up I was within this CS:GO/Steam market economy and it baffles me on how we can't seem to find these specific use cases that can build on what has come before.

The dumbest thing IMO (which you sort of covered at the end) is that all these use cases can be done with something like the steam marketplace. There's no need for a blockchain-based system to do this. Even the case of using an NFT to unlock stuff in multiple games... you could just have the other games query if you bought the microctransaction elsewhere. This part was what made me think companies might back off this actually - since they stand to make more money selling you things that you can't transfer to other games or other people, and has to be a major reason why they don't allow trades like this under current setups.

But even so, I can't imagine Steam isn't capable of lowering those, they just like the income. As for shutting down, while this is true, the main point I was trying to make is that so many people seem to be touting NFTs as enabling this sort of trading when it wasn't possible before. The main reason it hasn't been possible is because the companies selling you MTX stuff don't want you to be able to buy from anyone other than them, same reason Nintendo has always hated the 2nd hand market.

Who owns what and where's my weapons and armor NFTs?? They don't know because all their data is gone. IPFS and blockchain can store the NFT files and metadata forever and the data cannot be changed by nefarious actors or by the crashing or loss of hundreds or perhaps even thousands of nodes.

I'm thinking from a VR enthusiast's POV who's excited for a centralized home for VR. I think the forthcoming appeal of NFTs is transferring those assets into your virtual home and social hub. The skins won't have any function, but you can show them off to your friends in the virtual reality, for example VRChat. Digital apparel could be integrated to VR avatars, which could also add value to NFTs. So those pants (which are ugly by the way) can be worn by your avatar, if the skeleton permits it. Basically, it's displaying your virtual trophies in VR social hubs.

You kinda touched on this point but didn't go all the way: NFTs in video games are completely and utterly pointless because the entire pitch of NFTs, guaranteeing "true ownership" in a decentralized network, is completely null and void in video games. The blockchain might be decentralized, but Ghost Recon Break Point certainly isn't. At the end of the day, if Ubisoft decides to tell me to go fuck myself, they might not be able to remove the NFT from my wallet but they will be able to remove the skin tied to it from my account, making my NFT worthless. As long as the game is owned and controlled by a centralized company, the "true ownership" that NFTs promise is basically impossible. Decentralization + Centralization = Centralization.

It's so painfully obvious NFT's are for their own profit, it's embarrassing. Literally everything these companies are saying is total bs.

You could immediately tell it's just another way to wring out more money from players thanks to the fact that ubisoft jumped on that shit right away

Fun fact: The reason that zebra's haven't been domesticated is because they have a closer relation to donkeys than horses and they're a lot more dangerous than a donkey.

@channelofstuff And people think that they'll be able to use the DLC skins in other games lmfao. Good luck getting devs to port the skins for every game they make and for any other dev that supports NFTs to cooperate with them

@channelofstuff you don't own anything on your computer because it's all fucking fake cx lol like wtf are you even talking about ownership for when it comes to the digital space? It's all fake and it's purely entraiment and a place to store information.

@channelofstuff the only thing you own when it comes to a computer is the computer the hardware because it's a physical object you can feel touch and 8f someone takes from you it is considered theft.

I wish people came down on dlc, microtransactions in paid games, pay to win, early access, season passes, and the general fact that most games aren't finished on release anymore as hard as they're coming down on nft's right now. tbh it seems like just a different new trendy way to do the exact same things. pointless? maybe, but I don't see how it's inherently any worse than before.
